I'm a bit surprised no one's posted about this yet, but today sees the re-release of one of the best video games ever made; System Shock 2. Yes, the very good indeed first person shooter/RPG hybrid (it's more RPG than Deus Ex is, for example, so think Deus Ex only with more melee, deeper stats, less reflex action but more thought required), more atmosphere, and, actually just buy it. It really is first class.

On the other hand, perhaps you shouldn't get SS2, as it will remind you just how dumbed down modern games are.

But if you want to see what gaming would have been like, if it hadn't gone down the FIFA/CoD McGaming route, then go to Good Old Games, at;

http://www.gog.com/gamecard/system_shock_2

and pick up System Shock 2. And if you want more SS2 goodness, remember there are fan made mods and missions, plus installation advice (the original CD version is difficult to run on modern systems unless you follow the advice on that site) and more at;

http://www.systemshock.org/index.php

For best results, play System Shock 2 when there's no one else in your room/house/flat, with the lights off, and the sound up, and try not to jump in your chair too much when playing the game - it really is atmospheric.

You drive a hard bargain but I went ahead and got me some SS2 just now! :yeah:

I've long read and heard about the game that is a spiritual predecessor to the BioShock series, correct? I've wanted to give it a try and this is one of those times when I really appreciate gog.com as now I have a version of the game that won't give me fits trying to install it on a Windows 7 computer. Thanks for the post, Kerr Avon!

Meh, I'll hold off until it makes its way to Steam or elsewhere, I don't like GoG after the aprils fool stuff they pulled a while ago

What did they do? I have 32 games from them. I guess I missed out on any April Fool's shenanigans they've done.

I got it wrong, it wasn't a aprils fools joke but still a pretty bad marketing stunt

It's your choice, of course, but not buying a game from them isn't going to hurt them, so you might as well buy it if you want it. Plus whatever you might think of their actions that one time, the fact is that with the GOG release you get the game now, plus extras (mp3 soundtrack, art works, wallpaper), plus the game is DRM fee, which is the big advantage of GOG for me millions of PC gamers - just download the game, back it up on CD/DVD, and you've got it forever, even if GOG do disappear in the night (which does seem very unlikely).

Yes, System Shock came first, then System Shock 2, then a *long* delay, then Bioshock, which great though it is, is much much shallower and less involving than the SS games.

By the way, if you want to play System Shock 1, it's not (yet) available for sale, but some fans put together a package called System Shock Portable, which contains the game plus DOSBox (SS1 is a notoriously difficult to run DOS game, but this package is setup to run automatically on any system) plus mods to enable mouse look and make the controls much easier to use. You can download and play this, and buy the game when (if) it comes on sale, to legally own a copy. I can't post links as I think N64F won't allow direct linking, but just google for "System Shock Portable" for downloads and help.

Thanks for the link to that site Kerr Avon. I didn't know they existed and they seem to have some decent games for fairly cheap. :yeah:

Meh, I'll think about it, I don't trust myself with physical media plus if its digitally owned I tend to forget about it
