Preppers (Bug Eating)

Been watching a series of programs in the UK recently on "Preppers"

These are the people who are preparing for social collapse/nuclear war/zombie holocausts etc... the programs are mainly about people/groups within the USA.

Now although I'm really not expecting a Zombie Holocaust anytime soon, I do actually believe there is a risk of social collapse due to the current worldwide financial situation.

I suspect the larger developed cities of the world will suffer most in this scenario, as these populations have become so used to having everything available, whereas the poorer areas where people fend for themselves already may initially see less of an impact.

Imagine all your local shops/supermarkets/fuel stations etc are suddenly not restocked, what position would that put you in?

I know here in the UK, just the mere mention of a fuel shortage will initiate panic buying and result in cars lined up for miles just trying to fill their tanks with fuel (which the majority of them don't need)

This results in a supply shortage and it can take weeks to restore the balance! :)

Businesses in the UK high streets are already closing down at quite a rate.

I'm sure I did read something on this forum about Prepper's but I cant find it now. (I thought it may have been Stinger?)

Anyway, I'm actually thinking of joining their ranks and stocking up on things I will need once the brown stuff really hits the fan.

I worked out how long I would be able to last if everything stopped right now, if the shops were empty, money was of no value, power and water supplies were cut and I had to live off what I had in the house.

I reckon I could last a couple of weeks before having to head out look for provisions. (which is quite a scary thought!)

Now I won't be stocking up on assault rifles, grenades and armour piercing ammo like a lot of these people in the programs seem to be doing (although I suspect the program makers are showing us the extremes)

but I would like to create a reasonable sized stockpile of things like food, water, fuel, medical supplies etc

I know there are many sites out there with info on this but thought it was quite an interesting subject for a discussion :D

Any thoughts?

While these people are lunatics in prepping for the apocalypse they have no grounds in believing in, that's not to say you shouldn't be prepared for ordinary crises like burglary, electrical shortage, extreme weather, etc. Always have jugs of water and canned goods to last over week, a first aid kit, wind-up flashlights/lanterns, batteries w/ a portable radio, sturdy locks on your doors, homeowners' insurance, and if you really live in the ghetto own a firearm. ha. If a national crisis happens a FEMA type organization is usually deployed and set-up strong at around the 2 week mark, but the days before that are an absolute nightmare (Katrina). So in the worst emergency possible (no electricity + all stores closed) hunker down in your home for 2 weeks with a radio, then emerge like in The Walking Dead to find a government zone of refuge. lol.

The first things on my list were a solar powered battery charger, car battery and a 240v inverter so that I can still play my Nintendo 64 :D

Thanks to the occasional hurricane I have a couple weeks supply of canned goods and water. I also have a generator in case power is lost.

I have a bag full of all of my handguns and ammo along with some MREs(meals ready to eat) and a first aid kit. And I also have rifle case that holds 4 rifles. These two items would be the first things I grab if I had to leave my house.

some MREs(meals ready to eat)
These are actually pretty tasty, the army's made them eatable now. ha As soon as I own a home I'll buy a bunch of these and throw them in the closet. Don't ever want to be that dude standing on his roof waving his arms at helicopters hoping one sees me haha, rather have a good supply of food and sit out a crisis. So hopefully :pottymouth: doesn't hit the fan before I own a house. lol

I saw a bit of that show the other week they seem to be into some hardcore stuff, if i was stocking up for stuff i don't think id be able to get weapons here that easy your not aloud one here without being in a club and if something did happen the nearest shop that sells weapons is about 2 and a half hours away :-/ but i do live right near a supermarket so food shouldn't be hard to get (Assuming most of the people in my area are dead) but id still need a weapon to get there, urghh to much to think about with this. but i dont think id stock up on tons of stuff just a few essentials, water, food, fuel and a generator.

I'm taking this in a slightly different direction here but its related to the initial post. :D

Its regarding growing your own food.

I already keep honey bees and a few chickens and i'm just about to install both exterior and interior tanks in which to grow a few trout for the table.

BUT.......and here's the good bit!! :D

I've been looking into farming insects to eat.

Now despite the HUGE reluctance of us in the Western world to eat insects, they massively outperform our normal livestock (cattle, pigs, sheep, rabbits etc) in EVERY category! (EDIT - ok,maybe except taste)

They provide, better nutrition, less fat, more vitamins and minerals, lower carbon footprint, excellent food conversion ratio (energy consumed : energy produced), use less space, can be grown for very little or indeed no cost, etc. etc.

So with this in mind I have done a bit of research, converted a few of my larger fish tanks into suitable breeding/rearing vivariums and today have just purchased 250 live crickets and 100 live Locusts :D

In the correct conditions these can breed exponentially and I should soon have a large amount of both for very little cost.

I can use them to feed both my fish and chickens, sell some to other pet owners (reptiles, fish etc) as well as hopefully trying them myself.

I'm not super keen on eating them but i'm not totally against it, especially as I've never tried it!!

Will be fun turning up to bbq's this summer with some 3" locusts on skewers and seeing what the reaction is!

How'd ya like them apples? :D

I've been stocking up on games and consoles.

Honestly, why would anyone want to survive the collapse of civilization? (which won't happen anyway but that's another story)
Sure, if you're lucky you can grow your own food and perhaps you can even keep the hordes of hungry looters and/or zombies at bay.
But you would die from the measles or the simplest infection (no antibiotics!), after a miserable life toiling the fields (no tractors or combine-harvesters!) for your daily grub.
No internets, TV, radio, movies, games or books and there's no more birth-control so _that_ is out of the question too.
That's not a life worth living in my opinion

We need a firearms or shotgun certificate to own a rifle, shotgun or high powered air rifle, which can be quite a process!

Private individuals are not allowed hand guns or automatic weapons of any sort.

I'm not particularly thinking about a post nuclear/zombie holocaust scenario here :D

more along the lines of a worldwide financial collapse which would see agriculture and industry grind to a halt before slowly recovering.

if this does happen, then within a few days prices will rise sharply and we will start running out of food, fuel, power etc

I'm not being over dramatic here, this type of thing is already happening in the likes of Greece and if you listen to the experts, its about to hit other countries such as the USA

Ha, you were beginning to win me over until that part! What I fear most is the texture, crunchy and gooey with all all sorts of weird tastes..
Even so I'll prob try a cricket or tarantula some day just to say I did it. ha

Well from what I've been watching and reading about it, thats exactly the reaction most of us westerners have when faced with eating bugs in Thailand/Cambodia etc

But for the people who can get over this initial reaction (females are not good at this) they report the taste of some (not all) of these insects to be quite pleasant.

Grasshoppers and crickets seem to be the favourites for taste, hence thats what i'm going for..

I might do a video of my first tasting!

I am very impressed with Highlander's range of interests. But I could not abide by eating insects. Besides the gross factor, I have no idea about what diseases they might carry that might be transmitted through ingestion if not prepared properly. But its mostly the texture issue like TNT said.

MKII raises a good point. If civilization collapses, life would be a difficult (perhapds unbearable) struggle. In many post-apocalypse/disaster/invasion movies, the one fighting are doing so for the next generation (of people, not games, just to be clear). I suppose that would be my main motivation.

I am of the mind that it is important to be prepared for the next weather/natural disaster, because those are real and imminent threats (though I am not sure I'm really all that prepared right now). I do not think any of that other stuff is really likely in my lifetime.

From what I have researched, wild insects may contain:

harmful levels of insecticides,

high levels of lead (a big problem in Mexico)

or if you are really lucky, a nice tapeworm larvae

farm reared ones should be free of any of the above.

Although people do eat them raw, proper cooking is the best method, baking, grilling, boiling and even freezing them initially as a quick kill method are all suggested.

Travellers in some African and Asian countries carry ground down baked grasshopper in a powder form as a high protein, long lasting food source

Maybe we could live with a powdered grasshopper shaker alongside the salt and pepper shakers

Endure and survive...
Highlander, You remember right. I described myself as a prepper a couple of months ago. Good memory

I have 5 ( I believe) bug out bags loaded and ready to go.

They contain various things. Tent, basic tools, extra clothing, dozens of flashlights, batteries, flares, cord, knives (about 150), a few pairs of binoculars, emergency blankets, first aid kits, gas masks, ponchos, blankets, matches, wetfire tender (will burn even IN water  ), various survival manuals, maps of all local areas and states, water purification tablets, dehydrated food, ammunition (over 2,000 various rounds for my 10 firearms), a few ounces of silver, extra belts and shoelaces, a trifold shovel, and other various things that are slipping my mind at this late hour

We also keep a full pantry to boot.

You never know, and I am just wired to try and be prepared for crises situations. Extreme civil unrest is what I tried to be prepared for.

I don't know the history behind these ones so they are going to be my breeding stock.

they are at the final nymph stage (5th Instar) and in a week or so will be due to moult into the adult stage.

a couple weeks after that they should be sexually mature and breeding, then I can start eating their young!! :phear:

Wee update on the bug eating! :)

I couldn't get my locusts to breed, they moulted into adults and ate, flew, walked around but no sign of any sort of breeding behaviour whatsoever, I must be doing something wrong! :D

The crickets on the other hand are breeding like there's no tomorrow!

My original ones have now all passed away (of old age, its not much of a lifecycle!)

I now have the next two generations down from these original breeding stock.

The adults have been breeding for around 3 weeks now and the young are growing fast.

Last night I had a wee spur of the moment decision to try and eat some of them! :D (sorry I didn't video it but it wasn't very exciting anyway)

I caught 100 or so adults in a bag and put them in the freezer (most humane way to kill them apparently)

After half an hour or so they were all dead and i removed ten from the bag.

I put them on a baking tray and stuck them in the oven for 20 mins

When I took them out they looked just the same, although they were baked hard and not squishy anymore, a bit like the texture of crisps/potato chips.

I put them on a plate, took them through to the sofa and.......... stared at them for a while!

I wasn't really put off by the fact they are insects, well maybe a little....

I couldn't eat maggots or worms (actually if I was starving I probably could) but a baked cricket isn't a worm.

on my scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being a worm, a crispy baked cricket on a plate is a 3

So i picked one up and ate it.....

now as soon as its in your mouth and you start crunching it the insect thoughts just disappear, it actually tastes ok.

In fact its better than ok, its not at all like the Crocodile Dundee idea of "Well you can live on it but it tastes like :pottymouth: ", they actually taste ok.

In fact I found myself reaching for another couple before I realised it.

Once they were gone I went through and put the rest of them in the oven.

20 minutes later i had a bowl of crispy crickets, a quick sprinkle of garlic salt later and i was sitting watching tv crunching into them as if they were dry roasted peanuts!

Finished them in no time and could quite happily have eaten more!

So i'll be expanding the cricket breeding program, they are definitely going to become a regular part of my diet.

now I wonder how the family will like them....... :D
