Hey everyone, it is time for another round of "More About You". It has been several weeks since my last installment. I want to thank floorcat for filling in for me last month while I was still brainstorming. This time around I am asking everyone to share their school years experience. I know we have at least a couple of members still in school (waddle and gooman). You guys be sure to speak up as well. Anybody who attended a university can include that story as well. ![]() How would you rate your overall experience? How were you perceived by others? Did you have any special teachers? Make any lasting friendships? Meet your spouse even? And so on... I will start with pre-school. My parents were divorced, so I was very close to my mom and grandma. I remember begging for them not to take me. They even had to sit in the first few days with me. I made friends, and was better by the time kindergarten class started. It seemed fun from what I remember. The summer before first grade my parents had gotten back together. We moved 2 hours away from my friends. I reverted. A couple of times they had to physically carry a thrashing me into school. I even kicked a teacher once who was trying to hold on of my legs during the carrying. Soon I started making friends like crazy. I got a girl friend (who also lived in my neighborhood). I became pretty popular. My dad was very wealthy so I had tons of toys. My mom had started babysitting my girlfriend every afternoon and evening. So my guy friends really enjoyed coming over to hang out, swim, play with my toys, or be around my long haired good looking girlfriend this pattern continued through the 3rd grade. Before 4th grade my parents split up again, this time lasted. We moved back to the town I started school in. I didn't take this well. I had no friends and I missed my big house, friends, and girlfriend. I gained weight, enough for people to pick on me for. Fir the next 3 and a half years, my friends were my mom and cousins. I was very depressed, and kept getting sick. I had mono late in the 4th grade and a bad bacterial infection early in the 7th grade. When I returned late in the 7th grade I met my friend, Sedrick, through the means of gaming. We talked gaming a lot at school, and soon started hanging out. It is Sedrick who introdiced me to the N64. A month or so latter, I met a guy name Josh at my church. He has been in mixed martial arts since he was little bitty. He had taken from some famous teachers, and thus had a lot of cool stories to tell. Josh and I became good friends, and he started teaching me MMA in exchange for teaching him to rollerblade good trade for me! We were almost always together until he graduated a year ahead of me. I am still friends with both to this day.Things turned for me between 7th and 8th grade. I became friends with all the gamers. I lost 60 lbs from martial arts practice (in a matter of about 3 or 4 months). People began respecting me, or fearing me one. Which ever it was, people were friendly to me. I started having regular girlfriends again to. 3 of them in a row tried to cheat on me with Josh though. I didn't date from my sophomore year until I met my wife my senior year. I had always worried about classwork intensely. I instead became laid back, and found that I still made almost all A's in school. I stopped doing homework almost ever, instead doing it quickly before class the next day, unless that was impossible. I was never a trouble maker, so the teachers always liked me.I never fought at school. I would never back down, and without fail someone else would intervene, convincing the other person to back down so they wouldn't get hurt MMA served me very well for a lot of reasons, even back then I guess. My junior and senior years were a blast. I listened to my headphones all day, played gameboy, and slept through most of my classes. At night I practiced martial arts amd gamed. Those were the good old days I guess. At the time I had convinced myself that I hated school. The truth is, I miss it just as people told me I would. Gone are the care free days of my life. I had intended to go to a technical school after high school, but could never pick a major. By 20 I had given up on that, and just worked. Anyhow, that is my story. What is yours? |

Wow good story mate. Mine is a little different. When I was young in primary school, my old man was in the army, so we moved around heaps. I think I went to 5 different primary schools before we settled down in Rosewood for grade 6 & 7 of primary school. I was an average student, but excelled in sports. Particularly basketball and athletics. I was fast in primary school and was also good at the Long Jump, High Jump and Triple Jump. I would win each lvl right up to the states, where I would place mostly. In high school I went to Rosewood State High School for grades 8 through to 10. I did pretty average with my grades and got bullied quite a bit in those years. My only saving grace was my outlet with sport. I trained and played basketball everyday. I made the first team in grade 9 (there's 12 grades in high school), and was slotted into the starting lineup instantly. I hada lot of private coaching for both athletics and basketball in those years. Mostly by teachers that saw potential. In year 10 I placed second in the state in Triple Jump and was approached by Ipswich Grammar School (a well to do private school) to attend there for years 11 & 12 for next to no cost. They wanted me for High Jump & Triple Jump.. Grammar for two years. I made the basketball first V assist was called in year 11 & 12, competed in the state championships for High Jump & Triple Jump. Was invited to attend a try out for the junior Brisbane Bullets side (NBL Australian League) when I was 16 and 17. Never made it which sucked lol. I had fun at high school. I didn't try very hard with my studies, which I regret. I hada sport focus which filled in my year. I wanted to join the Army when I finished school, which I did. So i felt like the school work was a waste of my time. Surprisingly I still passed everything. Unfortunately my sporting endeavors ended a couple of years after school. I fell into a bad crowd and went through a very long rough patch, which lasted for nearly 8 years. But that stories for another day. |

Well ill start off in primary school, My first school i went to was a school in Hounville i was there for 3 years until my parents split up and i ended up moving into town (Hobart) with my father and i started going to school at a place called Albuera street i absolutely loved going to school there, the first guy i started hanging around with was my best friend till the end of Primary school, i remember me my best friend and my girlfriend at the time hung out all day at school and ages after school, i stopped seeing my first girlfriend after she got expelled for threatening one of the teacher and holding scissors to the teachers throat i was there for 4 years and had started seeing someone else after primary school my best friend and girlfriend went to a different high school than i did, i didn't stay long at my first high school i got expelled, and i moved to the same high school as my friend and GF i went there till grade 8 by that point i had left my second girlfriend and a year later i dropped out of high school and got a job for a while then i started college sometime later and left there after a few weeks because i hated it so i ended up going to Polytech college and got my certificates in Motor Mechanics and Panel Beating, that's about it.

i'll do it short cuz it's short. I skipped pre-school couple of times because i didnt like it. primary school sucked balls, I still hated it. High School was my worst nightmare. I made lot of friends that I still have tho. I finished my Secondary 4th (10th grade in US i think) and went to do a DEP (Professional class) where you learn a real job and keep the bullcrap away. I finished that program before turning 18 years old and i've been working full time since. school and me dont do a good mixture |

Thank you both for sharing. Wow, 3 very different stories! Dee you mane me think of the fact that I left out sports. I was terrible at them. My dad did not play any, so I never had that influence. All of my mom's side did play, and very well. I had an uncle that played for the NY Yankees as a pitcher. Another uncle declined offers to go pro in baseball. Almost all of my cousins played on state championship basketball teams. That was another reason for my lack of popularity. People would find out who my family was, and they were disappointed that I didn't play any sports at all. Mma is the only remotely athletic thing I was ever good at. If we had a wrestling team, I would have probably excelled at that. I guess I was a pretty good roller-blade as well

My elementary school years were fairly average. Kindergarten through 5th grade were all spent at the same school. My mom was a teacher there so every time I got in trouble my mom knew about it instantly. And they usually sent me to her classroom instead of the office. I didnt go to P.E. because I was a competitive gymnast(laugh all you want). I would leave school early to go to the gym. By the time I reached Junior High I was in the gym 15 hours a week. About halfway through the first year of Junior High my dad told us we had to move. He works for an oil company. So we ended up moving to Washington State. It sucked being the new guy but I loved it there. The snowboarding was amazing. We stayed there for one year almost to the day. Halfway through 7th grade we moved again to yet another state. we stayed In Dallas, tx for a little over a year and a half and I really started to like it. Still sucked being the new guy though. I played varsity soccer and basketball most of my highschool years. At the end of freshmen year we had to move again. This time to California. By now I was used to being the new guy. We stayed there for two years. I loved it there. There was great surfing and snowboarding. And the sand dunes were perfect for 4-wheeling. At the end of my junior year We had to move again. This time to Houston Tx. I finished up my senior year and then went to college. I got my associates degree but I never completed college. I used to be a fire fighter/EMT and loved it at the time. I made decent money and it was exciting and everyday was different. I currently coach competitive gymnastics, tumbling and cheer(again, laugh all you want) and the money is pretty darn good. I also sell real estate. Any questions feel free to ask... |

I liked school when I was young but as I got into the high school years I grew to hate it for various reasons. Middle school was freaking awesome though, I miss those days so much. High school sucked just being there and I often didn't really learn anything and I skipped a lot by my senior year. I live in a small town and in middle school social groups were more varied and flexible. By high school our schools merged together and people formed strict clicks and conformed to them like crazy. You were either a preppy nerd or you were a hick/farmer. If neither you hung out with the "others" who didn't care (this is what I did lol). Though not all of it was bad but overall I did not enjoy it. I'm in college now, its definitely better than high school. But I just missed my biology class. I don't know how but I set my alarm for an hour late and didn't notice til it was too late. (I have to drive 45 mins to school) And we have an exam in 2 days

I don't know why male gymnasts get such a bad rap... I've always thought they were the biggest BADASSES of all the sports! They may not be the tallest, but they're the most ripped, most agile, most able athletes, if you ask me. From early on in high school, I'd always regretted not doing gymnastics when I had the choice in elementary. Anyways, on with my story... Our family moved around a bit from 3 months after I was born, from Philadelphia, to Chicago, to Ann Arbor (Michigan), to Santa Fe, and lastly Los Alamos (both in New Mexico). But I was only "the new guy" in 1st grade and 4th grade. 4th grade was when I met my best friend at the time, who was (surprise, surprise) the one who got me into gaming... with Street Fighter II. Anyways, I enjoyed all my time in elementary, middle, and high school... I was never really picked on (probably because I had good friends in essentially every single clique), and always did really well in all my classes (thanks to parents who always pushed me very hard, academically). I was on the swim team until middle school, and on the (alpine) ski racing team from about 5th through 12th grade. (I even made it to - but didn't do very well in - the Junior Olympics in 8th & 9th grade!) During this same period, I also practiced violin... always on the school orchestra through middle school and high school, and made it to all-state all four years of high school. I did Tae Kwon Do from about 9th grade to 12th. What happened in 12th grade that made me pretty much quit ski racing, Tae Kwon Do, and violin? Rock climbing (which my girlfriend at the time had introduced me to). It turned out Los Alamos is probably one of the greatest placed to begin rock climbing in the world, in my opinion. But it was JUST. SO. FREAKIN'. FUN!!So... with all sorts of sports & music talents, paired with a pretty solid academic record and decent standardized test scores, I ended up going to a pretty good university (Ivy League, really?). But even though I was on the university ski team, all I could think of at the time was rock climbing. So much so that after my 3rd year, I took a "year" off and stayed with one of my rock climbing partners here in Boulder, Colorado. Had a blast climbing and playing GoldenEye/Perfect Dark for a good couple years (school obviously took a back-seat then)... and then we started shifting interests into bicycling. (Which is still my main "active" activity of choice. First mtn. biking, then observed trials, and now BMX.) I eventually went back to school, but transferred to the nearby CU Boulder, and finished up my bachelor's and even master's degrees, including a year spent abroad in Japan. I've been here in Boulder ever since! |

Really great stories all around, not much negativity which is good ![]() I was pretty much always a 'trouble student' for as lomg as i can ( and can't ) remember. I do have Tourettes' Syndrome, and it was at it's peak during my elementary years. I had no trouble making friends in elementary school because I was seen as "The funny guy". I do remember many particular instances where I crossed the line at my first school ( i clearly remember blowing up a row of firecrackers in class ) and was eventually expelled from the school. I think it's at that point ( and after many violent bursts ) that my mother decided I needed help, so I started taking a whole colorful array of different medication and pills to try and help my Tourettes and ADHD. In grade 3, I was accepted in a school for troubled students. That didn't last long either as I was expelled again because I gave one of my classmates all of my Ritalin once and he downed them all ( As far as I knew, I had to take these but did not know why, did not at all predict the potential dangers of such an act ). Needless to say he was hospitalized and I was expelled after being locked in a dark closet for 5 or 6 hours ( that would be the school's way of punishing innapropriate behavior ). The rest of elementary was more or less uneventful. It was fun from what I can remember. High school was different. I knew no one at this new school and it was truly frightening. My tourettes also tends to act up most when I'm anxious or stressed, so for the first two high school years, I was a nervous wreck. My physical ticks were going nuts ( Lots of involountary eye movements and face muscle action ) and it made me the center of attention, but not in the same way as 'The funny guy' from elementary. I was the weird guy. I was, before that, an A-student, but my productivity was at an all-time low in high school. After failing 8th grade, I was now with the younger group. People from this younger group later became my best friends an still are to this day. They saw me as "A kid too cool for a school so he DOUBLED!". People wanted to be my friends and it did good for my mental state which was taking quite a beating. One of my new friends, Mario, is one who introduced me to wanting to learn computer software just or the heck of it. We would spend lunch hours and breaks doing nothing but toying around with Photoshop, we'd practice drawing and 2D animation with Macromedia flash. 2D animation became my strong passion, and it was then decided I did not care anymore about what school had to offer. I thought: Why would I learn these things when I could learn more animation techniques and fun graphic designing instead? This was further accentuated when one of my friends introduced me to my first marijuana smoke. I was one of the lucky guys who had an amazing first time. After i started feeling dizzy from this newfound buzz, the first thing I did was spend the remainin 30 minutes of my lunch hour just drawing and toying around in FireWorks and I fell in love with the drug that my parents would always warn me to stay away from. The rest of my high school was spent failing classes as I would instead write stories, design cartoon characters and just work on MY personal projects. I did not have one care to give to school. Today, I'm finishing up my high school maths in order to study Videogame programming & 3D integration. The private college was extremely impressed with my portfolio and suggested I follow 3D modeling / art conception instead. I mentionned I want to get into programming because I am already quite decent and almost a decade self-taught in graphics software. I figure if I can program, do graphics, animation... I could be in very high demand in the industry and I would be able to maybe someday lead my very own projects! Some day I do want to make an independant game by myself A to Z. Thats my story

My Skool Career From A student to F in four years, had to do the 4th year over TWICE and was expelled in the 5th year. Several years later i went to night classes and finally finished "high school" Went on to university to study History but that didnt work out at all so i had to drop out. Alright here's my story. In elementary school I was always the one who was great at athletics and I was pretty popular because of it. I had lots of friends (many of whom I'm still best friends with today and plan to continue to be friends with) and life was good because school came easy. I had no experiences with bullying so that was also good. Then middle school came (6th thru 8th grade) and my love of food began to show haha I was still pretty athletic despite being a bigger guy and luckily I had great friends who only gave me fun loving teasing. School continued to come pretty easy to me, but it wasn't really super important to me despite my good grades.High school was awesome (9th thru 12th). School was definitely more difficult but I did pretty darn well considering the amount of effort I put into homework and such. I did get all A's and B's. I still was (and am) a heavier guy but that didn't really bother me because it didn't affect the way I was treated or felt which is certainly lucky and I'm thankful for that. I got my first girlfriend (and only one up to this point) about junior year but that didn't really end too well but thats okay. I was glad to have my great friends and pleasant family life who are always supportive of me. High school was a great time for me. I am currently a freshman in college and school requires more work but I'm focusing a little more now than I used to. Still don't let it control my life tho which I think is a good thing. I've made a good amount of friends but my biggest problem with college has definitely been comparing my new friends to my friends from home because in my mind they won't ever live up. Just something I'll have to work on. I also joined the forum just this year and the community here has really been great and fun for me! I love how everyone is so helpful and friendly :0 Thanks for listening to my story! |

My school history is quite varied and I'll probably mess up a few details but eh, that's how it goes sometimes, right? It all starts out way way back around 1980 when I attended kindergarten in Washington DC. I don't remember much about it but I've been told that I was one of a handful of white kids in a predominantly African-American school. My dad and I moved to Montana the next school year and I attended first grade in East Missoula. By the next school year we had moved yet again. We were in Osage Beach, Missouri for 2nd through 5th grades, although we did move a couple times and I ended up in two different Christian schools (one in Farmington, New Mexico and the other in Reno, Nevada) before returning to Missouri and rejoining the school there. For 6th grade we had moved once more, back to Montana, where I attended another Christian school in Butte. I was there until the summer before I was to start 9th grade (high school) at which point we moved to Panama City, Florida (my home state). I got to attend my freshman year of school there before we set off on another move back to Montana. This time we were in Polson for my sophomore year. We attempted another move that summer back to Missouri, but it just didn't quite work out and we were once again in Montana before my junior year was to start and we settled in Missoula, where my dad promise me that we'd stay in one place to finish out my high school time. And that actually ended up being the case. I finished high school there in 1992 and went straight to the University of Montana. I did two years there before I bombed out. I was so burnt out on school that I just sort of gave up in some classes. I lost my financial aid, was suspended and just lost the will continue school. I was already in the workforce and never really looked back. I didn't mention much about particular experiences at any of the schools for a few reasons. First of all, I was never really anywhere long enough to have any memorable situations. I was also never anywhere long enough to make any long lasting friendships. And, to top it all off, I suffer from massive social anxiety, so I always tried to keep to myself so I wouldn't get hurt, picked on, bullied, etc. Its been a long, winding road but it is my life and history, so I guess that has to count for something. I guess the neatest thing about my school story is that, due to my birthday being in the middle of the school year and a decision my dad made about starting me a little early, I was always the youngest kid in my class. I graduated at 17 and everyone always used to make cracks about me being a child prodigy because I was younger than everyone else. Meh.

That's funny... my parents actually pushed pretty hard to put me in school a year early, so I too was always the youngest in my class... by nearly a full year (with a birthday in October). But when I went to undergrad, there were classmates of mine who were even a year younger STILL... celebrating their 16th birthday in their freshmen year of college!!

My birthday is in November so I totally get you. I don't think I encountered anyone in college younger than me, but I also stayed to myself, and the U of M is a pretty big school. Attendance when I went was around 11,000 to 12,000 students, so it was easy to get swallowed up and looked over. The only classes I excelled in were the ones where I was just a blip. I both loved and hated college. And I'm not sure if I could go back and do it all over that I would do any better and apply myself more. |

I totally understand all the moving. Most of my primary school years were like this because my old man was in the army. He got posted to another city every couple of years so we moved almost constantly up until I was 11 when we finally stopped moving so I could apparently concentrate on High School and getting good grades. They worked out so well too lol

Finally got it done, sorry Stinger for my intense aversion to long writings. Again, I guess it's better late than never. I started school at four years old. At the time I had just moved to England. I was entirely homeschooled by my mom for the two years we lived over there. We moved back when I was seven and then my mom continued to homeschool me until I was nine. Things changed quickly after that; my mom was diagnosed with cancer and so for fourth grade I had to go to a five-day a week Christian private school. It was an incredibly difficult time but I did make a lot of great friends and made good grades, never got in trouble. In fifth grade things got better, my mom won against cancer (Praise God! ) and I went to a once a week classical hybrid school, we just did debates, learned Latin, and read ancient poetry, I did no math or grammar that year. Sixth grade was similar to fifth although a lot less methodical. It was once a week with several other homeschool families in our area, most of which I'm still good friends with. It was basically a breeze, the classes started at 12:00am and went to 3:00pm and it was at a church five minutes from my house. Seventh grade was pretty different, this time it was a legitimate hybrid/homeschool and I actually had to apply ( ) Anyways, it was two days a week and I made some good friend, who were probably not good influences, but I pride myself on having good head about myself and didn't make any stupid decisions. Eighth grade was different again (are you noticing a pattern? ) I was really bad at time management in seventh grade and was always fighting with my parents and siblings out of sheer boredom so I went to public school this year to give it a shot. It was pretty difficult and I felt very distant from most of the kids there. I was much more efficient with my school work at least since it was five days a week.Ninth grade was actually a return to the same, I went back to the two day a week school I did in seventh grade. I did much better this year and while it was still incredibly difficult to manage my time I always got all my work done eventually. My biggest regret, which isn't entirely my fault because it wasn't enforced, is not learning discipline. Ninth grade was by far my favorite year. This year is tenth grade, for the first time in six years I'm going to the same school for two consecutive years This year has been the biggest struggle in my personal and school life that I've ever experience. My ability to manage my time is slowly getting better but it's been an uphill battle the whole way. That's my story so far.

Thank you for sharing, Gooman! As I was saying to your privately, we will be homeschooling our daughter. It is interesting to read about your struggle to manage your time. I am so glad your mom won her bout with cancer!

Homeschooling hey? Not sure where I sit with that. Don't you think it's a good idea for the child to socialize with other children. I think that's an important part of the growing up process. |

Home schooling is always a tricky subject for parents. But as long as you've thought about it thoruoughly I'm sure you will make the right decision

Oh trust me, socialization isn't an issue (well it is for me, but that's just because I'm introverted). I have several really good friends in my neighborhood and go to a hybrid homeschool with about 300 kids. There are also plenty of social activities available to homeschoolers. Like homeschool basketball, baseball, football (American), or soccer (football). I also did a homeschool marching band last year. |

this pattern continued through the 3rd grade.

i was there for 4 years and had started seeing someone else after primary school my best friend and girlfriend went to a different high school than i did, i didn't stay long at my first high school i got expelled, and i moved to the same high school as my friend and GF i went there till grade 8 by that point i had left my second girlfriend and a year later i dropped out of high school and got a job for a while then i started college sometime later and left there after a few weeks because i hated it so i ended up going to Polytech college and got my certificates in Motor Mechanics and Panel Beating, that's about it.
i was also planning to go into the army after high school but since my father was in the British special forces and my Brother was in the Royal British Navy i would only want to be in the British army which i probably wont be doing since im in Aus.

And we have an exam in 2 days
But it was JUST. SO. FREAKIN'. FUN!!

I don't have time to type it all out right now but this is me acknowledging the thread. My story isn't too exciting either but I'll share it anyway, and I can't wait to read all you guys' stories.
) I'll have time.
