Hey everyone :)

Not to side track but as a kid "way back" I loved the :n64: , the cool graphics and super fun games like all the THQ wrestling games, the Mario's, the Zelda's and, the never forgotten Goldeneye. To me the N64 was "The Fun Machine" and recently I wanted to experience it again ^_^ . I bought myself a Gold N64 like when I had when I was a kid and my first game.. Goldeneye :D . Wow it took me back! Despite the graphical difference from modern games this game was as fun as I remembered it. One game became 4, then 10 and, before I knew it I was addicted :w00t: and started collecting. My collection is based on what I had as a kid and/or always wanted to play as a kid. To what I think were fun games to play solo and with friends.

Recently I had some people over for a party and we started chatting over video games and I brought up that I started collecting and playing N64. Everyone thought I was nuts cause it was "sooo" old but after a few brews I challenged my friends to Goldeneye "Man with the Golden Gun"! Needless to say we stayed up till the next day playing it. Just like in the old days :D . Which brings me to my point.. I can play Black Ops and BF3 for a long time but yet feel I'll never have that good of time as I did playing Goldeneye with my friends. The arm punching and cursing from blowing them up with proximity mines in the bathrooms of Facility or the Golden Gun. The N64 created social gaming! Real interactions and Real friends  . The Wii had a good grasp on it for a bit but not like the N64. Now its all online and as fun as it can be its no where near what you'd get from playing "The Fun Machine"!

I guess what I'm saying or asking is, am I the only one who sees the change in social gaming these days or how fun gaming really is with the :n64: . Will it ever go back? What do you guys think?

I agree with you in a lot of respects. The reason why today's gaming has lost some of that feel is because of the online aspect. People still game with others, but now its all done online and there is a major disconnect with the social aspect. Even if you chat with the people you play with via headset, you still lose that fun part you mentioned (The arm punching and cursing from blowing them up with proximity mines) and that is pretty sad. I didn't do a lot of gaming with other people even back then, but when I did it was so rad to make fun of the guy you beat in a fighting game, or try to distract your friend while playing a multiplayer shooter game, like Goldeneye. Sadly, it has all gone out the window with the advent of online gaming.

Agreed and, I'm not hating online gaming.. I play online myself but ironically enough with my friends and co-workers and it's almost like we "hang out" and being in battle is something we're doing at that time. But its not the same like you said :( . It was great while it lasted I guess.. Just going to have to start N64 parties :w00t: !

Endure and survive...
Great topic :yeah:

I miss the days of multi-player games with friends as well. I rejected online gaming for a while thinking it could not compete in any way. Eventually GTA IV won me over on trying it. Battlefield games hooked me on it. I could wreck my life on those games. I could play them sun up to sun down,

It is not near the experience of sitting next to actual friends playing the same game though ;)

The brotherly love that you achieve from sitting around with friends far out weights playing online by yourself. Online gaming is unfortunately not the same as being with actual people. The internet has started all of these social sites that people visit and claim to be social with others on that particular website. But it's not the same as having actual people around. If your only social engagement in any week is with your keyboard or your controller and someone else on the other end of that, then you may need to get out of the house more. :yeah:

I have to disagree I'm afraid. Not about how great and cool local multiplayer is, but about how you somehow defined it as "real social gaming". I'd like clarification on what makes this any more "really social" than playing online, put aside the arm punching and shoving ( which I don't personally recall doing much of when playing with family and friends ).

Even though local multiplayer was the first thing to exist, there are plenty of articles from the 60's-70's that state or at least predict that the eventual goal of having persistent, dynamic online communities playing these games together from the very comfort of their own homes.

I'm not trying to be a nazi or anything, but well presented online games today have the potential to draw you into the universe it's sharing. Like how some people can be friends, have a huge fight over something that happens in an online game, and that emotion literally does transfer over into the real life, because though you're just "Playing an online game", you're still playing with real people who make real decisions that affect you in the game. If your best friend kills your character and takes all your nice things, it could hurt, in the end it is still your friend behind that screen who made a decision.

I'm not saying online is BETTER either, I quite like myself a nice local game of Motorstorm or Mario Kart, but I dont see the superiority of local gaming either.

That's my personal opinion.

I don't know, online gaming can be super fun as well. I was a member of a Counter-Strike community (which is sadly now dead) about a year ago and we played CS 1.6 for an hour or two nearly every day for about six months. I got to know a lot of the people in the group quite well and some of us still play CS:GO or other games now despite the group being dead. We'd also joke around with each other and talk about various things while just messing around playing maps on the groups CS server. I actually got to know these people and had somewhat of a relationship with many of them, even if it was just that we all liked the same game.

Sure, local multiplayer is lots of fun but online multiplayer can be just as fun. It really just depends on who you're playing with. Of course you'll have more fun and a better social interaction with people on a competitive PC game than a console shooter that nearly everyone plays now. I suppose this also depends on your age group, I know we have younger members on this forum and they probably have no issues socializing with people their age in games like CoD, BF3, and Halo 4. If you're older you're most likely not going to enjoy the social aspects of those games as much since for whatever reason their primary demographic is teenagers now. Online games can be fun but you have to find the right community that you like and then try to make friends with people in that community.

I am not saying I don't like online gaming because I do put in my share of BF3 with my co-workers and/or friends. When I don't play with these people I really know online gaming doesn't feel social at all. Feels like playing with smart AI or in other cases stupid :P . To me that fun social aspect comes from playing with not to be rude but with "real friends" like you would playing next to them whether its a lan party or 4 player Goldeneye :yeah:.
