Most PAL TV's have a 60hz option, regardless of whether they are HD or not. For example, my cheap-as-chips 21" CRT can display 60hz and it's nine years old. 50hz PAL is a leftover of the pre-dvd era and you'd be hard pushed to find a non-60hz compatible PAL tv now, regardless of price.

HDTV's run 60hz as standard, as that's what 720p and 1080p require. The "p" stands for progressive scan, which usually runs at at least 60hz and new sets run to over 200hz.

Time for an on-topic post from me. >_<

Last week I got a couple of GameCube games, which are:

Serious Sam: I remember hearing about this back in the day so I figured I'd pick it up. It was a budget FPS I believe, which focuses on solid run-and-gun gameplay just like Doom.

SSX Tricky: I haven't played an SSX game so I thought I'd get one and see what all of the fuss is about.

Sonic Mega Collection: I had the first three Sonic games way back when I had a Genesis, so it's great to be able to revisit them without having to buy the system again. Though it's disappointing that no save functions were added to the games.

The Serious Sam games are all really good fun. Next Encounter (the Gamecube title you just got, also out for PS2 I think) is probably the weaker of the three games but it's still a blast. Which reminds me... I've yet to finish it. :)

And, yeah, the gameplay is just like Doom but with bigger environments and more enemies.

So the GameCube version doesn't have a save feature? I have SMC on PS2, and it has a save feature for each game.

Something special arrived in the post today. I went a bit sentimental and bought the first console TV-game that my family ever owned. Here it is:

Posted Image

It's a Grandstand Adman 3000, first released in 1977. I remember playing with one of these way before anything else games-related entered our home. Basically, it's a Pong machine but it has four playing styles; practice (you practice returning the ball), tennis (two player Pong), squash (two players take it in turns to bounce the ball off the same wall), and football (two player Pong but with two bats each).

The game has "realistic sound effects"... which means it beeps. And "integral or remote player controls" which means the controllers detach from the main body of the console! :w00t: All of which is crazy cool... for me, anyway. ^_^

The GameCube version was released first and was an exclusive for a couple of years. When it was brought to the PS2 and XBox, a few things were added such as save features and it was titled "Sonic Mega Collection Plus".

That's quite the find there, I can't believe you got the box to it too. I love how it's called a "TV game" and that it looks like an old transistor radio.

So... is it as awesome as you remember it?

I expected to be disappointed with it, as I had been with the Atari DTV and Commodore DTV units that I'd bought... but I've been pleasantly surprised. Pong is still enjoyable even if it is as basic as it gets. I think the problem with the other DTV units were that they were made really cheaply and felt like it; the joysticks were terrible and made the games feel crap. The Adman 3000 doesn't have that problem because it doesn't have any joysticks! ^_^

It's good fun. :)

Does an HD television make it look better or worse? Or does it not matter for an image that's basically two rectangles and a square that's called a ball for some reason?

Not tried it on a HDTV yet, but I suspect anything that is sent via RF is gonna not looks so hot.

New stuff:

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, only bought last Friday but I've finished it already. I'm not complaining, it's a really enjoyable game and I've only just unlocked the good stuff. :D

I've had Zelda Collectors Edition since it first came out (way back in 2003! It doesn't seem that long ago) but this copy was being sold for only £2 in a charity shop near me... I couldn't believe it! Everything is in mint condition, except the casing which has a few very small and barely visible marks. I've not decided whether to sell this on eBay and make about £15-£20 profit or just keep it as a spare.

Halo 2 is another game that I've owned for years but these days I'm looking to get rid of the so-called "limited editions" I own if all they offer is useless extras... they also stand out like a sore thumb on my shelf, and I like uniformity. :-8 The "Halo 2 Limited Collectors Edition" is probably the first example I can think of that came in the (now standard) limited edition tin case and was packed with a watch-it-once bonus DVD. As far as I can work out, this "limited" edition seems to be more common than the edition that came in the standard plastic case! ^_^ So I've taken the mint condition disc from my collectors edition and put it in the standard case. Now I can sell, trade or just give away the collectors edition (with the not-so-good disc). :)

Just bought:

Mario Kart Wii
House of the Dead: Overkill

I'm having a few issues getting my Wii online, so no friend codes just yet for Mario Kart. But my first impressions of the game are...OMG!!!!!WOW!!!!!!!

House of the Dead is great fun as well; probably the most fun I've had playing on on-rails shooter in years. However, the ridiculous amount of swearing is starting to grate on me.

Here's my newest acquisition.

428 ~封鎖された渋谷で~ (428 - Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de)
~> Very interesting game, but you need at bare minimum, basic Japanese. I could barely make out the first scene but did come away with some idea of the initial story. FLOORCAT, YOU'VE GOT TO GET THIS! It's pretty intriguing, although I initially thought there would be tons of FMVs.

BTW, Mop, those games only makes you cool, you know. It must be a real fun game series noting. I've not played a single one, but I think it's pretty darn cool you've managed to collect all of them. :) How different are the Mario Parties?

Thanks.
Although each entry in the series has followed the same basic formula (a board game with a minigame at the end of every turn), I still think it has gotten better with each new release. The biggest changes happened during the N64 trilogy. The first game had a lot of games with button-mashing, analogue stick spinning (yikes!), and just plain dumb luck. The second game has quite a few of the same minigames, only now they are a little more fleshed out, and there's no more stick-spinning either. They also added a couple new spaces to the boards, and items to be held and used later. The third game added duel boards to make 2-player games possible without having to sub in computer players, as well as having even less button-mashing minigames and allowing three items to be held.

The first GameCube installment might seem like a step back on paper, because it is more of a refinement than anything else. Although the minigame count is lower than MP3, there are very few throw-away minigames. The only thing lamentably missing are the duel boards, which make a comeback in subsequent Mario Party games, although they are sectioned-off parts of the regular boards as opposed to separate boards.

Mario Party 6 has some minigames which used the included microphone accessory, as does Mario Party 7. I just got the microphone along with MP6 so I haven't tested it out yet to see how well it works. It seems like a cheap gimmick though. Mario Party 7 has some 8-player minigames, possible by having two people sharing one controller, each holding one side. These games aren't anything which couldn't have worked as 4-player games, they're just a way to include eight people. Though if I ever gathered up that many people to play a game, I'd throw a LAN party instead.

Mario Party 8 is the best in the series. Being on Wii, it was easy to give it more variety than the previous games. It also has the most features and characters, though it of course doesn't have any minigames which use the GCN microphone, nor does it have the 8-player minigames.

Is that all of them?
It is all of the ones which were released on home systems. There is also Mario Party Advance (which I'll get at some point) and Mario Party DS, as well as some Mario Party cards for the e-Reader.

I'm kind of surprised that there hasn't even been word of a Mario Party 9 for Wii, especially considering the series used to be a yearly affair. As good as MP8 is, it doesn't make as good use of the Wii features as it could have, as about half of the minigames still use just buttons. Wii is the perfect system to revitalize the series, especially since it now has competition with all of the other games trying to capitalize off its success by placing the word "party" in the title. The only reason I can think of as to why they haven't done so is because MP8 is the best-selling of the entire series, and is still selling.

Would you feel MP8 is a huge step above all the other?
Not really, it is still essentially the same game at its core, it just contains all of the good elements from the previous games. It has the most variety due to the Wii controller, its boards are some of the most inspired ones in the series, it has the most characters, it has all of the best features of previous games, etc. It's sort of like how Perfect Dark didn't do anything revolutionary, it just took everything that was great about Goldeneye and made it even better. If you wanted only one Mario Party game, make it this one. If you wanted one for the Nintendo 64 or GameCube, I would recommend 3 and 7, respectively.

So, what do you do when you acquire every game in a long-running series? You create a YouTube video of pure awesomity:

Mario Party 1 Through 8 In 48 Seconds

Random trivia: Bowser is never playable in any Mario Party game. That must be why he's always so pissed off in them...

So far, I just spent a few minutes on Minmin Island and met the lass, Hikari-san. The graphics are very underwhelming but, I think they didn't really think it was the point of the game. So far, it's a bit funny... kind of like how Viewtiful Joe doesn't take itself seriously. Seems like Captain Rainbow is like a distant cousin of that game.

I've not played Star Wars The Clone Wars, Spiderman or Spiderman 2 but they were all cheap so I thought I'd give them a go.

I used to own Resident Evil 4 for the Gamecube but sold it when I got the Wii version. The copy I got today only cost £2.50 and it's mint. I think I'll probably hold on to this. :)

Which means my Resident Evil collection looks like this:

It's nowhere near complete but all of the major titles are represented in some form. :)

And to copy Mop's Mario Party post slightly ^_^ the order I played them in was:

REmake > Zero > RE4 > Code Veronica > RE2 > RE3 > RE4 Wii Edition > Umbrella Chronicles > Deadly Silence > Code Veronica X > RE5.

Nice. I could never get into Metroid 2, it's definitely the worst in the series. Mostly it has to do with many areas looking the same and no map. It's one of the few games I want to see remade since then it would be playable for me.

Sweet. There's nothing better than compiling a mass of a beloved series. Now all you need to do is create a YouTube video showcasing them all within 48 seconds.
