The New Tetris is the worst version of Tetris ever created.
You should play Tetris Worlds for GBA, it's really quite broken and could probably give The New Tetris a run for it's money.

As you may have guessed, I only played New Tetris for about five minutes (to check the cart worked alright). I had several other games to test so didn't play any of them for long. It's disappointing that it's a bad version of Tetris... I did notice the three shapes preview but I guess I just thought it was down to the difficulty or something.

I'll play this some more and then let you know what I think.

On a side note... so many bad versions of Tetris. How hard can it be to get it right?

I used to own that. The only reason it isn't worse than The New Tetris is because The New Tetris has ear-numbingly bad music and an educational theme.

All I wanted was a 4-player version of Tetris, which is why I have interest in the Japan-only Tetris 64.

Harder than it would seem, apparently. The original is still the best but I guess that's just because I appreciate the simplicity of it. Although I haven't played them, Tetris DS and Tetris Party on WiiWare seem close to getting it right because they actually give you some options on which features to use instead of forcing them upon you.

Donkey Kong 64 - Much cheapness. I'll trade or resell it for more. This was probably the most disgusting looking cart when I bought it; it was covered in melted chocolate, dust and hair (even on the contacts). And I kinda think that's why it was so cheap, I doubt it would have played if I hadn't cleaned it first. It works fine now.

Yuck. :-/ You'd think people would clean something before they tried to sell it. Was there a picture?

It's okay, I actually bought it from a pawn shop so I knew what I was letting myself in for.

Actually... I keep forgetting that you live in Scotland, Mac. The places I usually visit are Cash Generator and Cash Converters. That's the place I got my 99p copy of Majora's Mask from.

*quick internet check*

Looks like there's a Cash Generator in Hamilton, they'd be worth checking out as these stores quite often have N64 games and accessories really cheap. They rarely have N64's with expansion paks, so they can't test out games that require it... i.e. Donkey Kong and Majoras Mask (I doubt it's coincedence that those games are sold cheaply). I suspect they probably quickly tried the cart to see if it worked and it probably didn't, but they'll risk just selling it for 99p anyway. After all, how many people would return a 99p item?

And I can profit from them being careless. :D

Ah, I thought you would have got them from ebay. That's sort of the default place for old N64 games, isn't it?

I've heard of Cash Generator. I'll have to take a look some time. While I was typing this, an ad for cash converters came on TV. "We buy you're gold!" Is it a sign?

If you know what you're after then eBay is great, but it doesn't always have the best deals. Charity shops and pawn shops tend to be cheaper.

New stuff:

Resident Evil Outbreak - not tried it yet.

Wipeout Fusion - tough, fast... everything you expect from a Wipeout game.

Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (Game of the Year Edition) - I had the standard edition, now I can play the expansions. :)

Tom Clancy's HAWX - a more user friendly version of Ace Combat. Looks sweet and plays well.

And... a Game Boy game you probably can't quite make out. See a close up by clicking here! I only bought it to see how it compares to the N64 version and, as expected, it's completely different. Seems alright but it's mainly standard platforming so far. :)

Building up my PS3 collection these days... so Killzone 2 was a must. I've played through the first level but I'm having difficulty getting into it, probably because of the FPS-overload that is Xbox 360. It's not that Killzone 2 is a bad game, more that I maybe need a break from sci-fi space marine FPS's for a while.

Prototype is interesting; graphically it's behind the other 3rd person/sandbox/superhero game of the moment (InFamous). But in other respects it's better. For example, InFamous is good but it's such a ripoff of Crackdown, from the rooftop jumping down to the low chime you get when an agility orb... sorry, blast shard is near. But in fairness, you couldn't ask for a better game to copy than Crackdown, it really is amazingly good. Prototype has it's own charm and doesn't feel like it's a Crackdown clone. The core gameplay is basic (destroy this and that, run to the next objective, destroy this or that) but it gives you the tools to vary the your strategy if you wish to. You can use the cover aspect, different powers and different routes to approach objectives to vary your strategy. Wanna do things stealthily? Use the consume/disguise feature. And the whole things is really, really fluid... almost too much so. Point your character in a direction and he'll run and jump over whatever's in his way... so you don't need a jump button. It works a bit like Zelda: OoT, except it's taken a step further.

Oh, and I got this freebie with the game. :)

The PS1 games were more impulse buys... and they're all in nice condition and were cheap. I've not played the first Driver before so it'lll be interesting to see what it's like. I already owned an incomplete copy of Metal Gear Solid, so I've taken the first disc and manual from this one and have a complete copy now. Never played Tomb Raider 3 either but the first two were okay, so I'll see what it's like.

Lastly, Pokemon Silver. It doesn't work. :( I've tried it on my Game Boy and Game Boy Player but after the Nintendo screen all I get is a blank screen. Tried cleaning the contacts (they're now very clean) and opening up the cartridge to see if there's anything obviously broken... but it looks alright. I dunno if replacing the battery would help...? I thought if the battery was dead that you just wouldn't be able to save? Can anyone confirm if that's the case? Should the game still load if the battery has died?

I just got this little beauty:

I already own this game but I couldn't pass up having the box and manual to one of my favourite games. I'm going to sell the game on eBay and if I play it right I think I can sell it for what I paid for this complete copy. So it will be like I got the box and manual for just a couple of bucks at the least.

And... this actually brings up a topic which has been on my mind...

I have a little catching up to do in this topic.

Quote:

The game should still boot up if the battery is dead. The battery went dead in my Pokémon Gold game so I can confirm this is the case. Even if the battery were removed, the game would still load up. Assuming it worked in the first place that is.

I don't know what might be wrong with it but if you've cleaned the game and it still doesn't work, it might be broken somehow. There are a couple more things you could try though. First, try blowing on the contacts. I know this isn't something you should really be doing but the game can't work any less than it does now, right? Secondly, try cleaning the system itself, you never know. Lastly, try out wiggling the cartridge into different positions when it is inserted in the Game Boy/Player. Lift it slightly to one side, lift it up very slightly, push it in really firmly, things like that.

Can you post a picture of the inside of the game? Maybe I would see something you didn't.

Quote:

I don't remember anything specific about it but I remember not liking that one at all.

Quote:

I don't need a close-up to recognize that it is Space Station Silicon Valley. And I wouldn't expect the Game Boy versions of N64 games to be anywhere near as good as the N64 version is.

Quote:

Tetris 2 - I need to read the instruction book... the new shapes and rules have me totally confused.
You have to connect 4 or more blocks of the same colour to make them disappear. Your goal is to get rid of the three flashing blocks at the bottom of the play field. If that sounds familiar it is because it is a total ripoff of Dr. Mario.

Quote:

Shadow Man - Because owning the N64 and Dreamcast versions isn't enough. It was cheap and I was curious. You can apply that logic to any situation. ^_^
Yeah can't say I blame you. But I think we all know the N64 version is better than the PlayStation version. ^_^

Quote:

1080 Snowboarding - I noticed the artwork was different on this cart, turns out it's an Australian copy.
That's also the same artwork used in North America.

Quote:

Mission Impossible - Owned this before, it's getting a second chance.
Something tells me you're still not going to like this game. It's one of those which would have greatly benefited from better hardware.

I'd been thinking about buying an original Game Boy for a while...
The original brick Game Boy is really cheap now, I've been thinking about getting another one since the screen on mine is pretty messed up (somehow dirt got under the screen cover). I've always found it to be the most comfortable out of all of the Game Boy systems.

I have a magnifier similar to that as well, not sure where it came from but man is it ugly!

I got some more Playstation games:

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare - not played it yet. Looks kinda Resident Evil-esque.

Need For Speed Porsche 2000 - Played this originally on PC and thought it was decent. The Playstation port holds up well. :)

Ridge Racer Revolution - The second Ridge Racer game is as good as the first. It's a blast!

Tomb Raider II - It had been ten years since I last played this and my first impressions are that it's still pretty good. I've since gotten used to the controls of Tomb Raider Anniversary so this feels a little odd. I'll get used to it.

Thanks Mop_it_up. I've tried repositioning the cart but still no luck. I've tried playing it on both my Game Boy and Gamecube Game Boy Player; both work fine with all the other games I have, just not this one. I've cleaned the contacts to death (literally... :( ) using cotton swabs and ethanol alcohol, I've also tried the eraser method, but that hasn't worked either.

I'm left thinking that it's one of three things:

1) The cart has somehow come into contact with some liquid which has fried it.
2) The last owner may have screwed it up by trying various glitches to duplicate Pokemon.
3) Or maybe he's been using a Game Shark/Action Replay and has saved with codes on. That can fry a cart as well.

Nice. The orange N64's look really good... very tempting! :)

I got quite a lot of stuff this week:

Posted Image

Infamous Official Strategy Guide - Seen this sitting amonst a pile of overpriced PS3 games and it looks brand new. It even still has the poster with the island maps on the back.

Gran Turismo (Playstation) - I've seen this plenty of times before but the disc is always scratched to hell. This one is in excellent condition and was cheap so I took her home with me. ^_^

Descent (Playstation) - I ws only really interested in this because it was the inspiration behind one of my favorite N64 games (Forsaken). The gameplay is very similar but Descent hasn't aged as welll.

Game Boy Color - This is lovely, mint condition, not a scratch on it. I was after a purple one (to replace the purple one I sold in 2001, same time I sold my original N64 >_< ) but this will do nicely! :D

Metal Gear Solid 2, R-Type Final and SSX3 (PS2) - These were all for sale in a charity for £1.99 each, and they're all in perfect condition. I was extrememly pleased... until I noticed that MGS2 has two manual inside. One for MGS2 and one for Rez for PS2. Nooooooooo.... the thought that Rez in perfect condition may have been sold to someone else hurts... it hurts so much... >_< ^_^

Time Crisis 4 and Guncon 3 light gun (PS3) - £17.99 for the game and gun, which is a pretty good price. I've seen the gun on sale for more without the game!

Transformers Animated: The Game (DS) - A surprisingly good DS puzzle game, and only £5.99 on Play.com.

Yeah, it was in a "Cash Converters" store, sadly it doesn't have the box but everything is in good condition. The game is okay... I didn't really play much of it. First level was pretty hectic, lots of people to kill but there was something missing... I dunno.

A NES!!!! Sweet. It works fine and is in good shape. I opened up the controllers and cleaned them... it wasn't a pretty site. 20 years worth of dirt and grime had built up inside them... yucky! :-X

Wheelman (360) - Seems decent, I like the stunts that you can pull off.

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen (PS3) - The game is better than the movie. It's a good improvement on the last transformers game. I know I'm gonna enjoy this. :D

Super Off Road, Super Mario Bros, Powerblade (NES) - These came with the console. Only tried Super Mario Bros so far.

Sim City 2000 (GBA) - Seems alright, not played much.

Buck Bumble, Resident Evil 2 (N64) - Got Buck Bumble cos it was cheap, finally found RE2 at the right price (i.e. NOT £60!!!).

I have to say, I'm pretty surprised you bought an NES alxbly. I thought you weren't into 2D games, and the few you did like were on the Virtual Console or XBox Live Arcade. I'm curious as to what led to the decision to get one...?

SimCity 2000 on the GBA is a terrible port. It's been a while so I don't remember much, but one thing I do recall is that there is no way to build water pumps yet buildings still need to be watered.

Go for it! :yeah: It always nice to have an new controller with a tight joystick.
And by the way, did you that the new white controllers have a three meter cord? (Don't know the length of the old ones - two meter maybe?)

PS: I always liked the wavebird controllers, but at the same time i always missed the rumble feature. A wavebird with an rumble off/on switch would be awesome! You could decide: Rumble on - short battery life, rumble off - long battery life (I know that this will never happen :-/ )

Unless it was different in other regions the GameCube controller cords are six feet in length, which is a little less than two metres.
