Are there any game genres you've fallen out of love with?

I've found myself losing interest in a few particular game genres over the years and I'm curious if anyone else has had the same thing happen to them. For me it is the fighting and racing genres that have went from among my favorites to almost mere afterthoughts. I used to play Super Street Fighter II Turbo (and, eventually, Mortal Kombat) with friends practically every week for months on end. I followed the MK series across numerous platforms and through various iterations. Today, they simply don't mean much to me anymore. As far as racing is concerned, I have never been a super fan of racing games. Only a small handful have brought me hours of enjoyment. Games like Burnout 3: Takedown and several of the Need For Speed games. But nowadays racing is a forgotten genre for me. I don't care for simulation-style games like Gran Turismo. I'd rather tear stuff up like in the Burnout games or race downhill on bikes like in Downhill Domination.

While I'll always have fond memories of those early games and experiences, I find myself ultimately distanced from these two great gaming genres. Any similar stories to share, guys?

I'm not sure if I've fallen out of love with a certain genre, but my taste in games has changed over the years. I've always been a big fan of sports games in particular NBA titles, but as I've gotten older I tend to gravitate towards games that tell a really good story. Games that engross e in the story line right through the game.

I used to play a lot of FPS, I guess you could say I've kinda let that go. I really like games that keep me on the edge of my seat and keep me guessing at all times :yeah:

Ive kinda fallen out of Sports games and FPS's (Unless they have a good story with it) But i really only like games with a good story that i can really get into (The same as Dee mentioned) I used to love Racing simulator games but i have more fun with some of the NFS games and things of that nature now.

The only genre that I don't really have interest in any more is platformers. Mostly that's a consequence of how good multiplayer games have gotten over the years.

I still like racing games but mostly arcade style ones as opposed to simulations. This is probably why I'm so looking forward to sequels to F-Zero and Wave Race on the Wii U.

Fighting games are still a favorite genre of mine too although I like Super Smash Bros. now more than say Killer Instinct. Mostly I wanna have fun and not end up getting pissed off because my opponent has devoted so much time with a fighter that he knows all the moves down to each individual frame of animation. :-/

i can see music games falling into this category. im still a huge fan of GH and im starting to pick up some RB vibe too.

thats probably one of the biggest category people fell in love with and probably quit the fastest.

Yeah I agree with Cabanon, music games were the quickest to explode and shortest lived genres I've ever seen. I lived and breathed games like Guitar Hero and DDR back in middle school. I haven't really played 'em since but I've been trying to get back into Guitar Hero, bought a controller at Goodwill last week but it was broken. :( Other than music I don't think I've really stopped playing any genres, too many good games to pass up.

I think that with the right set of friends, we could all get back into the game genres we've fallen out of love with. Red, I'm with you in that I've pretty much quit fighting games. Back in the SNES days, I was ALLLLLL about them!! And now, I barely even bat an eye when I hear of a new fighting game receiving critical acclaim.

This generation, I've only kept up with Street Fighter, and even then, after Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, I told myself I was DONE with fighting games. But along comes a group of good friends who have recently gotten REALLY big into SF, and now I find myself totally interested in the game, when in their company. We had a little game night that ended up lasting a solid 4-5 hours later than planned, simply because we were all glued to the screen duking it out against each other!!

But put me back in my own environment, and it's back to my usual (non-fighting) games. Although... the trash-talking has carried over through text messages, and I admit feeling at least a LITTLE compelled to practice for the next battle.
Now Playing: Clash Royale (mobile), Gravity Rush 2, Rayman Legends, Project CARS, Uncharted 4 Survival Mode ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

most definitely racing games. I was a racing fiend for a while. GT3, GT4, NFS and the like. Now it seems like the least fun thing imaginable to me.

Also years ago, most fighting games. Mortal Kombat was great back in the day, but does nothing for me now. Same goes for most traditional fighters.

Racing for me as well. I used to play the Need for Speed series religiously. The last one I purchased was Need for Speed Shift and I returned it the next day. Havent played a racing game since.

Except for Mario Kart but that doesnt count

Strangely enough, I used to be a Die Hard fan of Zelda,

all the games/figures/cosplay even.
(Cleared maybe 80% of them)

But after some .. well issues, I just pulled out the plug from out of no where and didnt pay any atention to it. such a shame

I never even played/looked at Skyward Sword 0.o

I also LOVED Mario Kart, but its now .. more easy, auto drift, 700x hit by blue shells in 1 round.
Its just.. not the same as the DS/N64

Hack and Slash RPG's, for two main reasons:
1: I no longer have the time for games like that (grinding etc).
2: Diablo was my favourite game series of all time. Diablo and Diablo 2 I LOVED, and I can't remember how many hours I put in D2. Then came D3... and destroyed everything -_-
I still have Torchlight that I still haven't finished, but other than that, I don't see myself playing Hack and Slash RPG's. Heck, I'm not even sure if Torchlight qualifies as a Hack & Slash game.

My 2 favorite styles have always been been platformers and adventure style-RPGs. The other one that comes right next is FPS. So many, many hours spent on Rainbow Six 3/Black Arrow. Does anyone here played that game online? Maybe we've met before :)

FPS's, because now it is all about carrying two weapons, automatically recovering health, respawning enemies, quick deaths, and COD military / bioshock style shooters. gone are the tactical, quiet and planning stages of yesteryear, like hoarding ammo and killer guns in turok, one-by-one eleminating of guards like in goldeneye, varrying environments... they took away everything that was cool in FPS's, and they changed everything they could to destroy the genre

action adventures. I despise the focus on story and quick time events and linearity of story progressing like in heavy rain, uncharted 3 (i'm playing two hours and i STILL run behind two dorks, feeling very restricted, or running around as a little child, escaping from gunmen). i'd chose infernal machine over uncharted 3 any day. i'm through with watching cutscene after cutscene. you can skip them, but even IN THE GAMEPLAY we find linearity in the form of quick time events...

simulation racers. gameplay is flushed down the toilet. its all about buying a car good enough to win races....wtf. how can there possibly be any challenge in such a formula :nope:

and if i didnt say it enough already: I HATE COD!! it killed the fps genre :(
