I personally just like pokemon for the rpg
When it first came I liked that it had a similarity with final fantacy and that you could play with other players that had the same game . Also that some characters had special abilities like fly to get to another town witch was a cool feature.

But for the cartoons ,merchandise ,events. I dont find that interesting .

I was a huge Pokemon fan when I was a kid, but I'm not sure what my first exposition to the brand was... Maybe the TV show or the original Gameboy game, but I can't confirm or deny...

I loved the first two sets of Pokemon but the new ones feel very uninspired and lame. That said, I still enjoy the games, I just don't get attached to the monsters as much as in the earlier titles.

I first liked the card game, I adored the show and I absolutely loved the game. I still have my original 151 Pokemon cards from when I was a kid and all my games also. No joke I can't stand most JRPG's but I buy every Pokemon game on release date and haven't missed one since Pokemon Yellow.

I was a huge pokemon fan until Diamond and Pearl. Then It got ridiculous with 493 Pokemon i think it was. I think 386 with the Hoenn region was perfect. Now its just crazy!

Pokemon is one of the most well-known franchises of the late 1990's and even throughout the 2000's. Being a 90's kid, I have lived through the start of Pokemon and have watched it evolve with each generation. I started out by watching the show, which is essentially what got me into the franchise as a whole. Then I eventually got a GameBoy Color with the first generation of Pokemon games. I loved them! I have played these games so much I can play them remembering where every item is located as well as what tasks to complete (for generation 1 at least.) One day I went to see Pokemon The First Movie, in which I received two promo cards, thus sparking my collection of Pokemon cards. After that, I kept up with each generation of game, bought a plethora of cards, and even got figures and other merch. I was a Pokefanatic I guess you could say!

Like I said, Generation 1 was phenomenal, and will always be my favorite! Generation 2 was very great as well! I loved the new Pokemon, new moves, and new regions. With Generation 3, I still had fun with it. But I began to notice the new Pokemon weren't as exciting as the older Pokemon. They still looked good and even had some neat new moves to go with them, but it appeared as if the Pokemon were a different art style. I kinda noticed how the franchise itself was turning more into a business rather than being full of artwork and story to appeal to kids. This also applies to the show as well as the cards. Even though I had the newer games, I preferred playing the older games, simply because they were more fun. Finally, Generation 4 arrived. I couldn't believe what Pokemon had become. The new Pokemon introduced were ridiculous with an artwork I wasn't to fond of. They even gave preexisting Pokemon new evolutions. This worked in Generation 2, and even in Generation 3. But Generation 4 was getting way to complicated and the Pokemon just weren't appealing. When Generation 5 came along, I had no desire to play the games or even keep up with the franchise anymore. It seems all the good ideas have been milked out of the Pokemon series.

Now it sounds like I hate Pokemon, and I don't! But growing up with the originals, the new Generations and games don't compare. I only collect games and other things pertaining to the first two Generations, which appears to be the prime time of the Pokemon series.

I'm old school. First 2 generations of games (including console), first 5 seasons of the cartoon, and the first generation of the WotC trading cards.

I also saw the first movie at the theatre, but didn't think much of it (too much focus on Mewtwo, who has a boring personality).

It really isnt that the series has gotten bad, its that we all grew out of it and we enjoy the ones we grew up playing because of nostalgia. Pokemon isnt geared towards people past the age of like 13 which is why most of us dont like anything past gen 3.

Pokemon hey? It honestly has never interested me. The whole Pokemon thing started when I was past my childhood an into my teenage years, so I guess you could say I missed the boat.

I don't really get what all the fuss is about!! :D

Other than Snap I haven't played any Pokemon games. The largest hurdle for me wasn't an age thing but rather that the main line of games was only available on handheld systems and I just didn't own any of them when the games were popular. I would have picked up a legit Pokemon console game that wasn't focused on something silly like pictures, stadiums or TV channels. X_D

I think putting it on the handheld was the smartest thing because at the time the only way to game on the go literally was the gameboy. Everyone could bring it to school or camp and battle and trade and it was awesome. Thats the main reason its on handhelds. I did enjoy Coliseum and XD gale of darkness on GC and hope they make an RPG for Wii U (unlikely)

Oh I won't ever bemoan Nintendo's decision to focus on the handhelds as it was a great strategy for them. I just would have liked to have gotten in on the phenomenon and since I have pretty much always been a console guy I needed a good console version. Thanks for reminding me of Gale of Darkness, though. I might have to pick it up.

I may have asked this before or it may have been answered in the past but I have to know: why is there always two Pokemon games released at the same time? What is the difference? I notice in retail that one version always seems to sell more than the other. I'm so confused.

Nintendo searched for a way to make gaming more social.
The idea they came up with was that they would release two versions of their newest game "Pokemon", a game about collecting and training little monsters. Each version would have Pokemons the other version didn't have. To collect them all you had to know someone else with the other version of the game and trade your Pokemon with his/hers.

Okay, that makes sense and I had thought that might be the case. One more dumb question, though. Can a person buy both games and trade Pokemon that way? Would they have to have two Gameboys/DS's/3DS's of their own?

Hold on... TRS you really never played or know the basics of what Red and Blue Pokemon are?? Man, that's worse than me not having a Facebook account :)
Just kidding ;)

Yes, in Red/blue you could own both games and trade the missing ones, but you'd have to have 2 gameboys on and linked at some point...

I've never owned or played any Pokemon games other than Snap and one of the Stadium games. Snap is fun for what it is but doesn't give me any feel for how the main games work. Stadium did nothing for me. I never had a Gameboy other than about a month with an Advance so that excludes me from many of the best Pokemon games, I'm sure. I'm not too bothered about it either but I feel I should know this stuff even as someone who has never been a part of the phenomena.

I loved pokemon up to Ruby/Sapphire at which point I thought the number or unique pokemon was getting absolutely ridiculous and the designs more and more horrendous.

Now, I can't even stand all these new pokemon.

Some of the designs are really good yogurt, pokemon have always had stupid looks look at ditto muk magntite, etc. plus the whole first set of pokemon are basically designed around animals which make them not that unique. I really reccomend getting x its the first good pokemon game ive played since HG/SS but for an original game ruby/sapphire/emerald

I'm a big Pokemon fan and have at least one version from every generation released so far. I have to agree that I prefer the older ones more than the newer ones, but that isn't to say the new games are completely awful.
Like hockeylife21, the last REALLY good one was HeartGold/SoulSilver, but Black/White wasn't too bad. I wasn't a fan of Black2/White2 though because I felt like there wasn't much of a point for it. One of the main reasons I am disliking the newer ones is because of all of the online options. Every game seems to have more and more buildngs to do things online and I feel like they are getting to be a bigger and bigger part of the gameplay which I don't like because I don't enjoy battling random ghosts of trainers online, etc.
Also, I believe that in B/W + B2/W2, there was city that was all skyscrapers close to a dock. I really hated that city because moving between roads required a loading screen everytime. I much prefered the old top-down look where loading screens were only necessary when entering versions.

Now, in saying that, I am pretty excited for Y because I have heard really good things about it, and it will finally be something fresh since Black/White. Also, I feel like the older generation of Pokemon are a little more important in this one and the absolute newest ones have better designs than Black/White. Sadly, I pre-ordered this from Futureshop and because of the holiday yesterday in Canada, I still haven't gotten it yet and I really hope I will see it in my mailbox when I get home today. :D

Also while there is a heavy emphasis on newer pokemon, you'll encounter tons of old gen pokemon in the wild throughout the game, for instances i'm not even up to the second gym yet i have pikachu bulbasaur pidgeotto etc so you'll see a ton of variety

Dorkly hosting a poll to see which is the best First Gen Pokemon:
http://www.dorkly.com/toplist/55317/the-greatest-generation-i-pokemon-of-all-time

(The answer is Blastoise if you didn't know  )
PS if you come to a close match up and don't want one of the Pokemon to be eliminated so early, click "skip" until you come to a match up that you feel more comfortable with ;) For example, I skipped any matches between my top 5 until they were literally the last 5 so they could be ranked higher
1. Blastoise
2. Gengar
3. Dragonite
4. Lapras
5. (Wanted Snorlax but accidentally eliminated him at around 60 :-/ )

Still digging the series after all these years, even with fairies and megalutions lol. Can't afford a 2ds and pokemon x at the moment, so getting the stadium games back from some friends and enjoying 3d battles old school
It must be exciting to never have played a Zelda game before - No64DD

Endure and survive...
Somehow I missed this topic in the past. I bought my first Pokemon game (Red) back when it first came out after a friend showed me Blue. Though this led to me foolishly trading my SNES and all my games for Gameboy Pocket (That later quit working), I have enjoyed Pokemon games ever since.

I went on to own Yellow, and caught all original 151 (last 4 or so by exploiting a glitch). I bought and enjoyed Pokemon Snap later. Down the road I picked up and beat Pearl, Black, and White. Eventually also acquired Emerald and Ranger. I still regularly pick up Snap and Black/White to play with my daughter :yeah: She is a fan of the show, and will play the games herself in the years to come :yeah:
