Just read a terrible article where the Wii U was ranked as a Top 10 worst console. Other than the fact it is only 1 year old, here's my other gripe that I've heard elsewhere: bad name. C'mon, are you kidding me? Xbox One, PS4, Wii U. The last is the only one that exudes any creativity whatsoever . . . .

Xbox One is the worse name I have ever heard for a console. When they already had a Xbox 1 back in the 6th gen. Playstation isn't creative at all. 1,2,3,4. I bet the next one is PS5 ;) . Anyways. I'm not a fan of Wii U. But it's creative unlike the other two.

Nintendo's console names always eventually grow on me. I haven't been in love with the names since the GCN days, but I've warmed up to 'em

I remember thinking as they were announced:

Gamecube?

Wii?

Wii U?

But now I'm used to it. Are they as cool as "Nintendo 64"? Well... what could be? They just couldn't top it after that.

I like Gamecube. It's different. Lol.

I am more of a fan of the Wii's code name "Revolution" better that Wii. It just sounds so much better.

Managed to get a cheap wii u premium pack and also managed to score a very cheap wii u Disney infinity starter pack.
My partner loves Disney so this was perfect.

I also noticed that EB games have some singles characters for $9 each (Selected lines only though) which is cheaper than Ebay. Anyone else know any good bargains on characters?

Also i'm looking for a charging cable for the gamepad as it seems to only last a few hours before we need to charge it again on the dock (would prefer a cable near where we sit so can we charge n play whilst playing of course..)

I have also heard rumors of the gamepad controllers being sold separately soon for roughly $120 AUD. (only rumors!)

Articles I've read say that Nintendo was trying to leverage the popularity of the original Wii with its HD successor hence the Wii U moniker.

Wow, calling a one year old game console one of the "Top 10 worst" seems rather extreme. I wonder what the pundits will be saying after the next chapters of Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. and Zelda are released?

Not ideal, but we keep an extension cord behind our TV so that if we are having fun, but the gamepad runs low, we can plug the gamepad charger into the extension cord. You can unplug the power adapter from the cradle and plug it directly into the gamepad and keep playing.

But yeah, a second cord (and longer) would be convenient.

FWIW, Nintendo is now offering a High Capacity Gamepad battery that they say lasts up to 8 hours, so that might be another option. Too bad it wasn't included in the gamepad in the first place.

Yeah... the only downside is the lower battery. If it lasted 8+hrs out of the box that would of been epic.

On a more serious and personal note my Wii U is not feeling well at all.
IF i manage to boot up, the Gamepad screen is completely messed up with a yellow or blue cross-hatch pattern oblterating the screen contents.
I'm about to contact Nintendo Tech support and i'm afraid i will have to send or bring it in for repairs. Darn!

UPDATE: yep, i'll have to bring in my Wii U this afternoon.
The only upside: i get to visit Nintendo HQ again :)

Just got back from Nintendo. They couldn't get it going either and said it was due to dust clogging up the airducts.
This has fried the motherboard and/or processsor and they won't repair or replace it under warranty.

I basically have two options: get a new console from them @ 180 euro. But they dont have any in stock now (?)
Or i can buy an entire new set in a shop for almost 300 euro.

So i'm basically caught between a rock and a hard place and terribly disappointed.
As i'm already facing a large repair bill for my Vespa scooter and I'm still without a job this is a big problem.

Why do bad things happen to nice people like me?

I own this console and I don't understand why it gets bashed so much, to me its the only console that feels next gen and that is because of the gamepad.
To me, the reason is that a general opinion started building based on low sales/ bad marketing and the lack of games, without most of the people actually owning and using the WiiU. Then people start talking out of the back of their heads and the word starts spreading like a virus.
Then there's also the "hardcore gamer" thing. A lot of these gamers don't even take a look at the Wiis because it's for kids. This is true. I've spoken to a few guys I know that completely ignore the console, not giving it a try and not knowing the great game that the system already has to offer. (I then see then playing Kingdom Hearts lol which a fantastic franchise by the way!)

The gamepad is as innovative as any console seems to be getting this gen. Nintendo took a very different path than Sony and Microsoft and it seems that the masses will bash whatever differs from that.

Nail head meet hammer.

@MKII: That is terrible. I think you might try to talk to someone else in a "customer service" capacity. There is no bigger or more loyal Big N fan, you bought at launch, and you actively blog/post about gaming. This is obviously a design flaw if a little dust can ruin the system. They really ought to work with you here . . . .

How much dust did it take to kill a Wii U?

Usually Nintendo consoles are nearly indestructible as proven by the sold-state N64 and disk based GameCube.

Sorry to hear that Mark. Hopefully they can get one in for you at some point at the reduced price. I'm guessing you don't want to pay full price for another. I'm guessing they only had a 12 month warranty on it. And with it being 14 months old it's lapsed. :(

I know we're getting Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U this year but I'd so desperately love to have a new F-Zero game too. A combination of F-Zero X and F-Zero GX with support for on-line play would certainly force serious gamers to consider picking up a Wii U even though the PS4 is more powerful.

Honestly, I don't see the need for MK8, did 7 sell many 3DS's?

Sonic All Stars Transformed (also on Wii U), is better than the mario karts anyways

You think so? I disagree (love mario kart wii) but its subjective anyway.

If it's not time to buy a Wii U, it may certainly be time to buy Big N stock. Below $15 a share?!?

SASRT is probably the best cart racer i've played, each level is a tribute to a classic SEGA game, the music, presentation etc is all really nicely done, and my biggest gripe with MK (The fact you have to unlock harder difficulties ) isn't there since hard (about the game as 150cc) is unlocked by default

I download and played the demo and ended with no intention of buying the game. Could I've overlooked it?
For some reason I really didn't like the gameplay.

I've yet to check out Sonic All-Stars, but since we're talking about fave kart racers, I'd like to give a quick shout-out to Modnation Racers... sure the load times were obnoxious (and they kind of killed the franchise off after a shoddy Vita entry and shifting of all efforts to the LittleBigPlanet world for LBP Karting), but the kart racing in MNR was quite satisfying, and the track/racer/kart creation/customization, not to undermine the user-generated content, was astounding.

Anyways, back on topic, it'd be interesting to see how Nintendo changes after the recent announcement of their readjusted targets. I think this is the first step to regaining humility and really reconnecting with their fans/supporters, with whom I feel they've grown so out of touch... as since the Wii's success, they've been very stubbornly high on hubris in my mind. (Much like Sony had been with the PS3 after the PS2's success.) Among the things they need to do in the next year:

  • Focus on really learning how to fundamentally embrace online community/gaming. Sure, Miiverse is a good start, but the fact that Nintendo's network is so behind compared to the competition (be it technically and/or in sheer user-base) that 3rd-party multi-platform game devs deem it necessary to drop all multiplayer portions of their game entirely (on the Wii U) is kind of a problem.
  • Not be so bullish in their online presence. The whole episode of demanding royalties for all "let's play" Youtube videos of their games made Nintendo look very unnecessarily greedy and (as with their nearly blocking SSB from being played at Evo last year) completely out of touch with their fanbase.
  • Suck up and resolve their little feud with Amazon, so Amazon can sell their consoles directly. Sure Amazon doesn't make much on console sales, but the fact that they're only available from marketplace sellers with a marked up price can be quite the deterrant to the initial purchaser.
  • Actually listen to their fans. There's no denying that Nintendo has been desperately clawing for the casual crowd that they'd won over (and been abandoned just as quickly by) with the Wii, but it's been frustrating that they place so much focus on their brands that can resonate also with the casual crowd, and completely neglect many of the ones their core fans have been asking for. I believe this is why we've seen the Wii Parties, Wii Sports, Game & Warios, Mario & Sonics, and (of course) the Super Marios... but also why we haven't seen the StarFoxes, F-Zeroes, and Metroids. Revealing that Operation Rainfall had no effect whatsoever on whether or not Nintendo decided to release the games in the U.S. truly revealed the disconnect between Nintendo and its fans.
Now Playing: Clash Royale (mobile), Gravity Rush 2, Rayman Legends, Project CARS, Uncharted 4 Survival Mode ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
