Yeah, the controller was gimmicky. I think the name also kind of crushed it. It comes out as an upgrade to the Wii instead of it's successor.

And now with there are rumors that a PS4.5 will come out, which would destroy the NX...

If it also had the ability to play games like CoD with a normal controller, as well as all the Nintendo games, then it would appeal to me more.

You do with most all games, especially those released from MK8 (May 2014) and onward. The Wii U Pro Controller is awesome; feels so good in my hands. But the gamepad is SO valuable in some games even when the Wii U Pro can be used, such as Twilight Princess HD. And with Splatoon and Captain Toad, the gampad is so integral that I do not consider it a bother at all.

Also, I'm nearly positive you can play CoD with the Wii U Pro . . . I don't think it is gamepad compatible.

It would have been a lot better, I think, if they packaged the Pro Controller with the Wii U itself. There would be way less gripes about the Gamepad.

Yeah, but the gamepad is very cool. I don't get the hate...at all.

Me neither. I think it's with the thought that Nintendo is a kiddie company.

Maybe. I think people were so upset with the Wii U release price (which was below the release prices of the PS4 and XBox1) and blamed the gamepad's high production cost, and then were not given a fair amount of games to play with it. Of course, in today's world, we all must have strong opinions about things IMMEDIATELY . . . one cannot possibly take the time to wait and see.

(While I wish there were more Wii U titles, of the ones I play, I think there is a good mix of gamepad and non-gamepad games. And as stated above, I like using both the Wii U Pro and the gamepad).

The Gamepad is awesome, and ya it can be a little like a gimmick at times, but honestly, ever since the N64, Nintendo loves coming out with new "gimmicks." Just look at the N64, had a crazy shaped console with wacky colors, a three-handled controller with peripherals that plugged into it, they created the rumble feature which everyone else ripped off, and they even allowed for memory expansion! Nintendo loves experimenting and pushing the limits, and I think thats what the Gamepad was supposed to do. I agree that it should have had its own unique name to make it seem like its own console rather than an upgrade, but honestly, I love the creativity of Nintendo. They don't play by the rules that Microsoft and Sony do... which unfortunately may be what results in their demise. :-/

For those of you that live by a Target, keep your eyes peeled for some Wii U clearance items. Yesterday, at my local Target, they had Xenoblade X on clearance for $19.87 (which is a highly rated game) and, though a fairly terrible game, Rodeo Sky Solider was also on clearance for less than $6 and it has both the Wii and Wii U discs included (which is a novelty unto itself).

Also, most of the Star Wars infinite characters were on clearance for less than $7.

Anyway, thought I'd share . . . and especially since "mortar and brick retail" doesn't usually scream video game bargains!!

The Wii version of Rodea is supposed to be pretty good, actually. That's the one Yuji Naka worked on. He wasn't involved with the 3DS or Wii U versions.

This may be falling on deaf ears, but Shantae: Half-Genie Hero has been delayed once again from November 1st to December 13th. I was looking forward to my first new Wii U game in months . . . .

So many Super Smash Bros. related topics on this forum have motivated me to start playing the Wii U version again. I've decided to take a more lighthearted approach and not take the game too seriously which is ultimately proving to be a lot more fun.

By the way, it recently came to my attention that Europe got a Super Smash Bros. Wii U bundle. Too bad we never got it here in the United States. Yeah, it's the Basic model Wii U with just 8GB of storage but you can easily and inexpensively supplement that with an additional 32GB flash-drive.

I haven't decided if we're going to see significant price dropping on hardware and some games over the next year or not. Past systems that have failed have mostly seen that, but that was pre-collect everything era.

Anyone looking for Wii U accessories might want to check their local Walmart as my store just started clearancing out things like remotes(from 39.96 to 19.00) and a few games (such as Kirby and the Rainbow Curse from 49.96 to 25.00). The purge begins?

I still would like to pick up the Bowser and Toad Wiimotes, and a couple different games, so will keep my eyes peeled for sales on that.

As for the console itself, I haven't seen one on a shelf since middle of December here. Even heard a rumor that Nintendo was buying them back from retailers. I'm sure Nintendo would prefer every Wii U be gone by the time Switch comes out.

store.nintendo.com is still a good way to get a Wii U at a good price.

I've been casually looking for Wii U consoles in stores and I've seen them at a few Target's. I also keep hoping for a big price cut but like was said above, it might not happen or be hard to get one because everything is collectible now lol. Also I've been looking through our local classifieds for games and consoles and people are already trying to get dumb prices for games and consoles. There are people selling "gently used" consoles for $350 with Nintendoland or something similar. One dude wants $400 for a Wii U with the Nintendo Selects Wind Waker. People are ridiculous.

I ordered a refurbished MK8 bundle from Walmart for store pick-up last week for a pretty smokin' price of $180 (it was the only one in stock online at the time)... arrived on Monday, still need to pick it up. >_<

@BDR: Yes! But technically, no... it'll be the first one that I own and actually use and PLAY! :w00t:

(Like the special white Sunset Overdrive Xbox One, I had one of those limited edition Wind Waker bundles, but ended up selling it off before I even cracked it open. Crazy to think that to this day, I've yet to even touch either console/controller!)

Okay, i thought you had made a prior acquisition. Well, enjoy this one! There are some great Wii U titles, but MK8 is one of the best.

Right now I'm trying to get the titles I want that I expect to be hard to find soon. I expect Smash and Mario Kart 8 will always be fairly easy to find for a decent price.

I would like to do that too.

Haven't done any looking yet, but pretty sure this is the console for me to get for Zelda.

... and you can find further solace in knowing that the WiiU version will likely hold its value much better than the Switch version.

Like I'm ever going to sell it 😅

Although yeah, I believe the cube version to be the superior version as well.

Feels kind of weird how they are doing this thing again of ending and starting 2 different consoles with the same game.

Nintendo's financials are out. I knew things had been bad, but they only sold 960,000 Wii U's in 2016, in contrast to roughly 6.5 million 3DS's.

No wonder they want to bury it as quickly as they can.

Basically 1 generation late to the Nintendo party but... having just recently acquired a Wii U, and as I tend to "skin" most all my consoles, which of these two should I go for???

(I'm currently leaning towards the first one, since my original Wii AND my Vita already have the retro skin treatment... although it might be neat to have them all match...)

I would go for an NES design myself because it's a bit cleaner looking, although I don't like the the stripe across the side of the game pad. The NES color scheme just goes great with every Nintendo console, makes me wish I didn't sell my NES Gameboy sp. The first one looks like it's Xenoblade Chronocles X themed so it would fit playing that game very well but it would probably show dust pretty bad. Anything better than a naked black Wii-u though. If possible I'd get the NES console but the Xenoblade-esque gamepad.
