buying one just for mario kart and hoping they will come out with some sort of bundle

you can be sure they will.
Nintendo knows very well what Mario Kart can do for a console, they were still selling MK Wii bundles until very recently.

Nintendo has run in to the harsh reality that high definition games take substantially longer to develop thus their internal teams can't put software out fast enough. Coupled with the lack third party support this puts the Wii U in a very difficult position. So much so that analysts are predicting that the Wii U will come in a distant third in the ensuing console war. That's not necessarily a problem as long as Nintendo can ultimately sell upwards of 50 million Wii U consoles worldwide ensuring that titles like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. are profitable regardless of development costs.

Pachter warns Wii U will finish a 'distant third' behind PS4 and Xbox One

Here in the United States serious gamers are openly discussing going with the PS4/Wii U combination in a similar way that the Xbox360/Wii combo seemed like the prudent choice last time around. Nintendo can make this decision seem even more obvious if they release a blockbuster title at the same exact time that the PS4 launches.

In large part because of the disaster that the Xbox One is turning out to be the Wii U still has the potential to take second place behind Sony's brilliant PS4. Nintendo's much loved IP's such as Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. and Zelda should ensure a moderate level of success and an occasional surprise entry like F-Zero could even convince some gamers to forgo a high-end console and stick exclusively with just the Wii U.

Years ago I read an article concerning Gran Turismo 3 in which it was mentioned that a large percentage of console purchasers often make their decision based on a single game or franchise. For me that's certainly been true as I've bought every Nintendo console since the N64 primarily for the Mario Kart title that inevitably gets released on it. In fact, I bought a Nintendo DS for Mario Kart DS even though I don't really like playing games on handhelds. What really pushed me over the edge on the DS purchase was the fact that it would do double duty and allow me to also play Mario Kart: Super Circuit thanks to the DS's backwards compatibility with Game Boy Advance software. But I digress; my point is simply that if Nintendo can convince enough people to pickup a Wii U for one of their masterpieces then many of those people may never bother with Sony and Microsoft's console offerings.

Miscellaneous rambling: Two of the best pieces of software that can presently be enjoyed on the Wii U are actually Wii titles in Mario Kart Wii (with its incredible on-line mode) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl thanks to its addictive local multiplayer capability. What's also nice is that both games can be purchased new for what a typical Xbox 360 or PS3 game goes for. :D

I didn't have any issues and it makes me really sad for now there will not be Zombi2. It was really harsh in places and cruel but I bought the ZombiU pack at launch and it is still the most fun I have had with survival horror since RE2 and Condemned.

I thought the sales would have been better then it was though the game did attract a lot of negative reviews. Still I hope they keep pushing it and drop the price on the Eshop. As per usual though it is hard to be Wii U right now with some much negitive press. Still on a brighter note the drought is nearly over and it can only get better... >_> right?

ZombiU was one of the only Wii U games released so far that I was actually interested in. Too bad to hear it won't continue.

Also ONM confirmed that Mario Kart 8 is 1080p 60fps and that is great news as there was some speculation that it was 720p.

All though I am looking forward to Mario Kart 8, I'm not seeing anything that's impressing me. I mean it looks great graphically, but unfortunately for me it's just another addition in a long line of Mario games and Mario Kart games.

As much as I love playing Mario Kart, it's starting to get a bit old and the games don't really offer anything different other than a few tweaks here and there.

I don't know, is it just me or is anyone else seeing Nintendo and thinking it''s life span is coming to a close real soon unless they drastically create some new franchises and some newer experiences for gamers other than the stuff they've rehashed about 4000 times already? >_>

I hope not, they are working on a new IP which is good so hopefully that will start more new games being made.

Plus Pikmin 3 is out in a couple of days and is getting good reviews, had mine on preorder for ages and cant wait to play it,

One of the big things I think is that mario kart is generally a franchise that doesn't innovate i mean lets be realistic all mario kart is there to do is push hardware and software sales. Normally we look at the zeldas and mario and metroids etc for the innovation but they proved us wrong with 3d world (not saying it'll be bad it could have been 100x better though) so yea while they "rehash" a ton of their franchises at least we only see like one or two per console generation and not 7 a system like COD.

One of the things I have been dreaming of is a Wii HD for so long and really I got one with the Wii U. I am looking forward to the delights of Nintendo's and some 3rd party games in the next 5 years. I enjoyed my time with the PS3 and 360 and as much as i enjoyed my Wii it really took a back seat most of the time. I am not slating it but Wii was my worst Nintendo console even though there were a few games that blew me away. I am preparing to upgrade my PC to last about 5 years in November so really I am not in any hurry to get on bored with other consoles yet. It is time for me to enjoy the delights that this console will bring and feel the game pad is a great way to play and keep my hopes up for HD Nintendo games. I love colour and so does Nintendo which finally means I get more then just that faded gritty palette I have just dealt with for years, minus a couple of games of games of course because Sony just can not help itself which good. My next Wii U games will be Zelda WW, DK, Mario, Watch Dogs, Sonic and Rayman. More then enough to get through festive time I hate so much.
Oh and my final games for the 360 will be South Park and GTA5

random donkey!

I'm feeling like I'm totally in-line with Dee on this here.

The last time I recall that I really, fully enjoyed a Mario (or even a Nintendo?) game was Super Mario Galaxy on the Wii, and New Super Mario Bros./Mario Kart DS, both on the DS. Yes, I bought Mario Galaxy 2, SSBB, Mario Kart Wii, NSMB2, NSMBWii, and Mario Kart 7 (I think?? Heh... I don't even know!!)... most even on launch day, mind you! But did I play any of these games? Well... probably an hour or so of Mario Kart Wii, and maybe 10 minutes of SSBB. :-/ If it wasn't for the extra 10 coins earned for registering a game on club Nintendo within 4 weeks of release, I swear most - if not all - of these games would still be left unopened.

I heard how great all these later games were... like all the informed netizen gamers, I saw all the great reviews (reviews which very likely compelled me to purchase all these games in the first place). But why didn't I feel compelled to even play them? :eh: I've never really put any serious thought into it until now, and (seriously) thinking about it right now, I actually believe it's some combination of apathy, franchise fatigue, and (lacking) online interactivity.

tldr;

My partner's kids are staying with us for the next month or so, and so I expect a pretty fun bit of Nintendo gaming in store for us. We had some good bonding time over Lego Star Wars, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and a little Mario Kart Wii last year... and it sounds like the youngest is really into Mario now (and hence, SSBB & NSMBWii).

even more tldr;

I don't doubt that Nintendo will come up with some really excellent, freshly new stuff. I'm REAAALLY hoping The Wonderful 101 does well. I know I'll buy a Wii U eventually. I've somehow neglected all the new Metroids, and practically every Nintendo-published RPG since Ocarina (so, no Zelda, no Paper Mario, no Xenoblade, etc.), which might be responsible for my very twisted impression of Nintendo games lacking innovation, freshness, epic adventures, amazing story lines, or character development. I know I'll buy a 3DS soon, too, so that I can start playing some of my decently-sized 3DS library I already have.

... but until that time comes, my PS3 & Vita are suiting my needs just fine.

what the wii lacks is a good mario title

something that is equally as good as super mario world, not "close, but no cigar" good

i'm talking multi level stages, where there is something to discover in the sky for example. i want the return of the "keys" to secret levels. the new super mario bros series lacks in that department. if they would make "new super mario world" they would have at least one new customer

the donkey kong country series should go back to realistic graphics, not the polygons of recent entries. those graphics pale in comparison, no matter how many million polygons a level has.

also, why make pointless games like zelda alttp 2, when it plays in the exact same world? i would totally buy a real sequel to alttp, with the same graphical style but a completely new world, and incredible deep exploration gameplay

a new "mother / earthbound" game would also be awesome

a high tech new f zero with guns in the same vein as wipeout, but better

c'mon nintendo! the possibilities are endless. wake up already :bowser:

I think action is onto something. Why hasn't Nintendo done New Super Mario World by now?! For once I'd really be into the idea of them regurgitating an old idea but adapted into the new console control schemes. Of course, I would have rather seen it on the Wii instead of for the Wii U but it still sounds like an amazing idea. I'm also in agreement on LttP 2. A proper sequel for a home console would be very welcome.

someone at nintendo's need to seriously play some of their celebrated classics, to see what gaming was all about

it seems to me the current developers only know those games from screenshots, the new versions feel sterile and empty in comparison

i'm fully realistic enough to understand none of that will happen. too much effort / too little know-how.

hell, would i want to play them on a soulless designed console? what happened to legendary designs like the N64? even that purple square box had at least some charm

maybe i'm too bitter, maybe i'm just a boring old fart

oh well, off i go to my trusty old snes / N64. :wario:

What lot sof people seem to forget is that YOU are not the same anymore as the kid who played his first games.
Nothing will ever surpass the moment you first played that Legend of Zelda or Super Mario 64 game you found under the Xmas tree.
We get older, sadder and wiser and perhaps even a bit spoilt for choice.

Music works along similar lines. For me there's nothing better than New Wave music from the late 70's / early 80's.
Purely because that was what i was listening to during my formative years and nothing will ever have the same impact on my life.

A very good point, Mark, but not exactly valid as a justification for the attitude held by many, myself very much, very obviously, included.

Short answer: Street Fighter. Long answer...

Anyways... I'll admit it again, the parallel isn't exactly a sound one, simply because these are two totally different genres. But if you're talking about the "magic" you feel from your formative exposure to an iconic video game franchise that can't be recreated/maintained... then I'll retort that it certainly can be.

Well Mark i gotta say I disagree with the ''Nothing will ever surpass the moment you first played that Legend of Zelda or Super Mario 64 game you found under the Xmas tree.'' part. I can't say those games were the first I played, but I'm pretty sure my first gaming experience was Pokemon on the gameboy (which really really was awesome), but I'm still getting mored and more WOW'ed today than ever before by what creative developers are pushing out today. I loved DK 64, mario 64, Legend of dragoon, final fantasy, man I could name dozens over dozens of games that were mind-blowing to me through the late 90's and early 2k's, but I never really lost that enthusiasm about gaming I guess.

You can argue that the feeling of being an innocent child playing you first video game be the best ever, but honestly, I think what I've seen this E3 (The Division, The Crew, multi-platform strenghtening, second screen etc...) I just think it gets better, and it will never stop getting better. That being said, though, I understand that alot of people are just terrified of change or have just gotten over the euphoria that is playing video games.

virtuix omni + Occulus anyone? :yeah:

Ubisoft seems like a sleazy company. They always put blame on other factors for low sales and never mans up and says it's their fault. I read someone Ubisoft actually lied about their ZombiU sales. Anyways, I'm not a fan of them and I most like wont pick up any of their games in the near future.

I don't know, imho Ubisoft is a pretty amazing developer (and publisher). Not just saying that cause they're located like 20 minutes away from me, but because Ubisoft is about to get a huge boost in in the next year with the release of some massive games from Ubi ( Watch dogs, South Park, Division, The Crew ) and why would they lie about Zombi U sales? The game clearly didn't sell all that many copies like just about every 3rd party Wii U game. That said, it's really clear that Ubi didn't think the project was that important, they rushed ZombiU probably just as a water tester, they wanted to see if a interesting-looking Wii U game will even SELL enough copies to be viable (guessing it didn't and isn't). They've got those other massive projects I previously mentioned going on for years now, I think I see where all the attention went instead of ZombiU

I don't have anything negative to hold against Ubi except it's desire to invest in many multi-title IP's

an earthbound for the Wiiu, now THAT is interesting,

Just.. (my opinion) to bad that they did not improve the graphics (like for example Link to the past 3DS)
it will attract more costumers.

I don`t care about the graphics and stuff, but when its the last time there was a new earthbound 0.o

I think them releasing earthbound on VC was a test to see if they could revive the franchise and put it on 3ds or wii u. Clearly its selling well and even though the creator of the series said its over and done with who knows :P
