So for years now I have been building different versions of a pc for my car, I have a touchscreen that I custom molded into my dash for a mouse and the PC part does the rest. I have been making them since 2003 at least. I run music, videos, engine info, navigation, and have data tethered through my phone for weather and anything else you can think of. Since I race my car I have a few cams as well that record for track video. This is my latest design that I have done to fit under the front seat. The previous versions were installed in the trunk in a gutted CD changer to keep the stock look. Here are the specs of the new build, have to keep the power usage and heat low since its in a car that will get hot. AMD E-450 APU mini itx Asus board 8GB DDR 3 1TB 2.5" media drive 32GB SSD boot drive 160 W Automotive PSU Installed some new components as well such as a faster connecting GPS adapter, a bluetooth OBDII connector and a few other odds and ends. Haven't got the new camera in the grill yet still working on some things. It boots up in under 7 seconds and actually loads up all the programs quite snappy as opposed to my older system that was just a platter drive. Here are some pics of the dash. ![]() ![]() Here is the PC install itself in a super small case. So far no heat issues as I added a few fans, it was odd the E-450 was fanless as it ran hot all the time. I figure if it burns out I will go to a i3. I custom made most of the cables including the ATX to be the exact length needed so there is no excess wiring for max airflow. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Here are some pics of the centrafuse front end, I tether with my phone for data, have tons of music videos, MP3's and whatnot. Garmin GPS and dashcommand for OBD gauges and diagnostics. ![]() ![]()

pretty neat thing. wish these were out in 2004-2005 where the peak for audio/video entertainment was in the tuner scene. now with our Dodge Grand Caravan, I have all of this built-in, dvd player, 1 dvd screen in the back for the kids, 1 audio/video component input (to play some lovely n64 MK64 matches), a 30gb hdd to store our music, 2 wireless heaphones for the kids (will need a 3rd one soon). the 2013 model even has a Blu-Ray player ! and there's the option to add a 3rd row screen as well. I would have gone that route if I still had my car, but to play FLAC files, not crappy mp3 as I had a very nice audio system. |

They were around back then just not well known, it's always been a small community doing it. Started off with a 800mhz processor and 1gb ram and win xp. Worked great back then and was quite advanced. This will do more than any in dash ever can, I don't need DVD capability as I would never use it. I tune my car on the fly with it as well and record multiple 1080p cams for racing all while data logging and using GPS. Plus tethering with a phone gives me access to the computer from anywhere. |

thats what I love about the newer in-car pc, internet connectivity. of course it comes with a cost as you need a nice data plan. mine cant read video files sadly but im not too worried for now, I just convert them to dvd and burn multiple (usually 4) movies on 1 dvd and it's all fine for 3 kids under 6 years old on a 7" monitor. |

Looks great justinwebb, I'm very impressed. How much do you reckon it would cost to put something like that in? Not that I would do it, too technical for me, but looks cool and I can see great value in having a storage system for all your music and stuff

Well lets see the monitor I have had before and a few other components but I will just list them all as if you were starting Screen-$140 Motherboard- $130 SSD- $30 Hard Drive- $100 Case- $130 RAM- $50 Wiring- $30 so a little over 600 but like I said i have had the screen and the hard drive from another pc so it was a bit less. Its an expensive project but worth it. GPS, OBD engine management and other items are of course more. |
