do you know why the card was never released in europe?
Probably because the 251 cards didn't sell as well as anticipated over here; they were expensive and there were plenty of much cheaper third party solutions by the time they had been released. Nintendo Europe probably figured that if the 251 card wouldn't sell they could have problems marketing an even more expensive 1019 card.

Also, the Gamecube's popularity in Europe decreased pretty quickly. Major stores in the UK announced that they were dropping Gamecube support pretty early on, so that must have factored in their decision as well.
Did stores in the UK really drop GCN support early on? I remember that I could buy GCN games here in Belgium (in most stores) until at least late 2006, in some stores even until mid to late 2007. Granted, the choice was pretty bad, but they were there.

My last post was badly worded, so I've gone back and changed it. At least two major UK store chains announced they were dropping or phasing out their Gamecube stock quite early in it's life; for example, the electronics store Dixons announced they were dropping Gamecube completely in 2003 and Argos announced their intention to sell off remaining stock:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/article_47584

Argos then reintroduced the console a year later as sales of Mario Kart: Double Dash took off. But still, major stores announcing their intention to drop the console only a year after it's introduction was a bad sign.

Other stores just scaled back the amount of stock they would carry. If I think back to the position in 2002, when the Gamecube launched in Europe, most stores had most space for PS2, about half of that for Gamecube and a smaller section for Xbox. Very quickly the Xbox and PS2 began to eat up the Gamecube's display space.

Gamecube was still stocked by games stores and other retailers but some did lose faith in the console quite early on. Certainly, most stores didn't increase the amount of space they initially allocated to the console. :(

Those cards work just fine, I've had one since not long after they were released and have never had a problem. But just to be safe I also have a third-party 1019 card to back up my important files with, and I'd recommend that you do the same. I have the InterAct one, which actually did corrupt on me whilst I was copying the files over... Not a good sign but methinks it was just because I copied too many files in too short a time. The card got good reviews, it was probably just a fluke...

One oddity I've heard about is that sometimes the format file will show up on the memory card management screen; this file uses five blocks and is the reason the cards have numbers like 59, 251, and 1019 instead of multiples of eight (64, 256, 1024). If you see an unidentified file on your memory card, do not delete it or else you will permanently corrupt the card!

It's a real shame how poorly the GameCube sold in other territories; I've heard that it didn't even break a million in the UK but I never got a source on that so I don't know if it is true or not. But I know the system sold more units in North America than all other territories combined so I'm not surprised people want to steal import GameCube goods from NA.

Hey guys, do you know if there is a limit of save files on the gamecube cards?

Like the N64 cards which allowed only 16 savefiles per memory card (correct me if i am wrong). <_<

Or are they just limited by the number of blocks (hopefully!)? :yeah:

Btw, today i bought one used 1019 nintendo card from Ebay for 15 dollar + 7 dollar shipping costs. Was it a good deal? :eh:
I found some slight cheaper ones on Amazon U.S.A, but i can't use foreign Amazon shops, 'cause i don't have a credit card.

Yeah there is but it is much higher than the N64. The limit for files is 127, which should be plenty unless you have a game with a create-a-feature and go crazy with it.

I haven't ever checked what they sell for so I don't know. They were $30 new and I think they are a bit sought-after so that's probably not too shabby.

Today i bought a third party RGB cable for my gamecube. Unfortunately it seems that it doesn't work. :(

I made a video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNC9z6n5Pc0

Is there anything i could do to test if it is broken or should i give it back immedeately?

How many scarts sockets does your TV have? Usually only one SCART input will be RGB, the others will be composite scart inputs. Try swapping the connections around. Try a different TV as well.

Explain in detail how you have everything set up and I can maybe offer more suggestions. ???

Mine worked heaps good for 4 years or so, then it failed last year, I lost half my data at least :(

Although this might not be the cars fault, and more people taking it out mid-game?
Dunno.
And yeah I used it in both Wii and Gamecube.

Sorry i did't recorgnize that you replied me in this thread, alxbly. Sorry for the late answer! :-/

About the cable... never mind... the guy who sold me the cable on Ebay was insightfull and sent me my money back and i even don't have to send the cable back. :)

I took a close look at the cable and recorgnized that it will never work!

Take a look:

Posted Image

It has its connections only at one side; nintendo cables have their connectors on both sides (top and bottom). Please correct me if i am wrong!

Now i won't bother with false third party cables anymore (at least the ultra cheap ones ;) ), i will stuck with the official ones.

Oh, you meant a component cable! Sorry, I thought you meant an RGB scart cable. Okay, here's the deal; component=480p, RGB scart=480i. But both are RGB. My advice would be to forget about component for the Gamecube; not all GCN games can run 480p (although most first party games do):

http://www.mobygames.com/attribute/sheet/attributeId,275/p,14/

Plus, the difference is really minimal; even on a large TV you'll struggle to notice if switch from 480p to 60hz 480i. You can get a good RGB scart cable for a fraction of the price of a component cable and the picture quality is very similar.

No it's a RGB scart cable. It doesn't fit in the digital slot of the gamecube! And it has a scart connection on the other end.
Or are there component cables out there which work through the analog slot?

Now i am totally confused...

That's weird. The shape looks like a digital connector...

Here's what i use, it's the official RGB cable that connects to the analogue output:

You don't see it in the picture: The scart connector has all 20 pins. (But most of them are inactive anyway)

As i said - it doesn't fit in the digital out (horizontally)

The platter with the connections is about 5 millimeters longer than the slot of the cable.

Weird. I'm at a loss. I've never seen a metal analogue connector before, the nintendo ones are all plastic.

Hang on, does it fit in any of the slots? It might be the wrong cable he sent. It looks familiar...

It does fit in the analog slot. The guy also sent me a second one (the same one) 'cause he thought the first one might be broken.

Today i opened the cable, does the color of the wires help you somehow, alxbly? Don't mind the three bended connectors, i tried to connect them with the other side of the analog port.

It's also weird that one cable is connected to the metal outshape...

I did contact the seller some weeks ago that he should stop selling these cables, because they won't work, but he did't answer me... well it's not my buisness :P

Zelda: Wind Waker

Reached the forbidden woods

Paper Mario 2

At the end of chapter 6

Luigi's Mansion

The Don't Bother Me With Your Problems Game

I think it looks like a Xbox or Dreamcast cable. I dug out mine to show a comparison:

Paper Mario TTYD. You're the closest to completing it (if I'm right) and it's a very fun, 'light' game (as opposed to the darker MP2 or the has-some-extremely-difficult-parts Super Mario Sunshine).

Paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion would nbe easy to finish relatively quickly. They're both good fun games. I think all the games on the list are worth finishing, maybe with the exception of Metroid Prime 2 (I found it to be quite repetative and boring in places). Star Fox Adventures has a few difficult stages at the end but it's worth it. :)

You mean the LightFoot test against MuscleFoot, right? ;)
I had to use the rubbing pen trick on this one. :)

Nope. :P Although I remember that took me a few tries. :)

There's a shooting sequence near the end of the game that annoyed the hell out of me... you ride a dinosaur... and I'll not say any more because I don't want to spoil it. You'll know it when you get to it because the difficulty spikes up considerably. >_<

Hey guys,

i don't wanna start a new topic about my little question, so I'll post it here:

I was always wondering if there are any differences between the main characters and sidekicks in Super Mario Strikers (known as Mario Smash Football in Europe) in terms of speed, power etc.?

Maybe it is written in the instruction booklet but unfortunately i don't have it. :(

There is, but it is barely noticeable. There are five types of players, which are:

Balanced: all-around ability
Playmaker: Strong running and passing, lacking in shooting and defense.
Power: Strong shooting and defense, lacking in running and passing.
Offensive: Strong shooting and passing, lacking in running and defense.
Defensive: Strong running and defense, lacking in shooting and passing.

The characters are grouped as follows:

Balanced:
Mario
Luigi
Yoshi
Koopa Troopa

Playmaker
Peach
Toad

Power:
Donkey Kong
Birdo

Offensive:
Wario
Hammer Brother

Defensive:
Daisy
Waluigi

Really the differences are hardly noticeable, so you can just choose your favourites and have just as much chance of winning. The Super Team is somewhat cheap though.

So I'm a little late to the Gamecube experience, but I've gotten once recently and am just getting around to playing it. All I have is the Platinum system, mad catz memory card, official black controller (joystick pad is missing), and white madcatz controller.

Games are: Super Mario Strikers (possibly one of the most fun games ever, imo) Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Paper Mario.

I can't use the official controller because of the pad missing, it kills my thumb. I've been using the madcatz controller on Strikers and it worked just fine. However I started playing Sunshine and I am having a hell of time controlling Mario. Is it just me needing to get adjusted to it, or does the game have control issues, or could it be the controller?
The camera bothers me too, much preferred SM64s camera.

Aside from that question, could I get some recommendations of the Gamecube essentials. I've been told that the Wavebird is the best controller, what about games and other accessories?

Thanks all.

Oh here is pic of the controller I'm using, next to my messed up original GC controller.

It sounds like your Madcatz pad is... well, as mediocre as any other madcatz pad. :-/ Get another official controller if you can.

That said, Sunshine does feel a little different to control from SM64, due to some moves being missing and others replaced by the FLUDD. Damned good game though... I still prefer it to Galaxy although I'm very much in the minority there. :(
