The Gamecube Topic; "Gamecube" or is it really the "N128" ?

I've actually been having GameCube (and Wii) fever recently. I just received Viewtiful Joe in the mail two days ago and I absolutely love it. A shame I couldn't get it when it was originally released. Anyway, here's my collection.

- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- WWE Day of Reckoning 1 & 2
- Sonic Heroes
- Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
- Animal Crossing
- Mega Man Anniversary Collection
- Capcom Vs. SNK 2 EO
- Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2
- Sonic Gems Collection
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
- Viewtiful Joe

If I had to choose a favorite out of the list, it would be WWE Day of Reckoning 2, another game I got recently. It has just about everything I love from the first game and more. It's a professional wrestling game done right.

I plan to add more to my GC collection in the future. There were a lot of games I never got to own for the system and others I need to get back. The N64 may be my favorite console of all time, but the GameCube is definitely in my top 5.

it's also in my top 5. my top 3 consists of N64, snes and gamecube, in varying order. history will look at these three consoles and find they are of the golden era of video games, before it all went up in smoke.

we get cool gadgets like the gameboy player (these days, you have to pay for games on the VC, but not on the gamecube though), gameplay focused games while still delivering jaw dropping graphics, great third party exclusives for a nintendo console (perhaps the last ever bunch of great third parties for a nintendo console) and all in all a very collectable console whith games that hold their value.

i wish i could eat my gamecube, i love it that much :P

Thanks to games like F-Zero GX, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Kart: Double Dash!! I've never really taken a hiatus from the GameCube. I love the little purple lunchbox of joy and I consider its controller one of the best in all of video gaming. So stoked that I'll be able to use it again in Super Smash Bros. IV on the Wii U! :w00t:

Those games where Perfect Grizzmeister! I wish I still had Mario Kart, for some reason that game is vanished in thin air 0.o
and F-Zero GX just made me angry because on very hard is really... very hard..

with with smash bros.. I had a world record on one of the missions you could do (bug happened and I won in 0.07 sec lol) but then I lost my memory card when I was playing at a friends place..
I also remembered I need to have 1 trophy to have them all (Diskun)

When I first saw the GameCube I was like "This is no cube...." and when the Gameboy Player came out and I put it on I was like " :omg: No way ....Its a cube! "

but regarding the games.. Bad luck happened while thinking about it..

time for another top 10 8)

1. zelda twilight princess
2. metal gear solid twin snakes
3. eternal darkness
4. resident evil
5. rogue squadron III
6. F zero GX
7. beyond good and evil
8. rogue squadron II
9. timesplitters 2
10. metroid prime

with a top 10 like that, one could wonder why we ever needed a next generation console.

the gamecube is really the N128. here are what i think are 128 versions or spiritual successors to some N64 classics:

super mario 64 - super mario sunshine / luigis mansion
ocarina or time - twilight princess
majora's mask - wind waker
wave race 64 - wave race blue storm
1080 snowboarding - 1080 avalanche
f zero X - F zero GX
rogue squadron - rogue squadron II & III
starfox 64 - starfox assault / starfox adventures
castlevania - blood omen 2
resident evil 2 - resident evil 0 / resident evil / resident evil 2 / resident evil 3 / resident evil 4
goldeneye - timesplitters 2 / metal gear solid twin snakes / goldeneye rogue agent
perfect dark - timesplitters future perfect
mission impossible - mission impossible operation surma / splinter cell / splinter cell pandora tomorrow
banjo kazooie - beyond good and evil
top gear rally - v rally 3
turok - turok
shadows of the empire - jedi outcast
indiana jones infernal machine - tomb raider legend
duke nukem zero hour - james bond everything or nothing
007 twine - medal of honor frontline / rising sun

then there are games that dont have a counterpart on the N64: metroid prime / metroid prime 2 echoes / eternal darkness / tales of symphonia / super monkey ball / sonic adventure

so i think the gamecube's library is unfairly frowned upon. there are a lot more good games than mario and zelda.

Can anyone explain this?

I noticed this yesterday.

The Silver one (Japanese) has this Second Serial Port, while the White one (PAL) has not

Also the Japanese has this nintendo-screw thing and the White one has just a cross screw

I have an Purple Gamecube (PAL) and that one also has a Second Serial Port and nintendo-screws

the white PAL console is a DOL-101; a revision of the standard DOL-001 model.
In order to cut costs, they dropped that serial port and the digital video out.

it's the best console of the 128 bit era, and the last real game console (notice how the word game comes back in gamecube), before videogames became movies where you have to push X sometimes

here are the games that IMO are real showcases of the graphical power of the GC:

1. resident evil
2. rogue squadron rebel strike
3. metal gear solid twin snakes

these games excell in sheer graphical bliss.

You are indeed correct with those choices. Of course, Rogue Squadron 2 being an early GC games makes it all the more impressive. Even if Xbox might have had technically more processing power that generation, GC definitely had the most impressive looking games. The other two are especially astounding next to their counterparts, though of course are brilliant in and of themselves.

Tales of Symphonia is an example of a more stylized approach with fantastic showcasing, and of course flagship titles like Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, and Wave Race: Blue Storm show off many different sides of the same hardware. Also a lot of water. Why did they love water so much?

I was pondering to purchase a Gamecube back in the day but i wasn't sure, it being my first console and all.
Then i saw a bunch of screenshots from Rogue Squadron and that clinched the deal.

New controller for GC confirmed with Smash bros

Posted Image

This is a peripheral which will allow you to use GameCube controllers with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

You can connect up to four GameCube controllers using the GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U. The peripheral plugs into the Wii U console with two USB cables. (You can use either the USB terminals in the front or rear of the console.)

You can use your existing GameCube controllers to enjoy Super Smash Bros. for Wii U with the same feeling of control as Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

*The special Super Smash Bros. GameCube controller shown in the video is also planned for release.

I wonder if it'll have the longer cord that the White Japanese GameCube controllers did?

Hopefully Nintendo will bundle a copy of SSB IV, the GC Controller Adapter and one of the new controllers for around $99. :w00t:

man i'm in serious gamecube collecting mode right now. nearly doubled my collection over the past few months.

i came to realise that more and more people begin to see the GC as the ultimate hardcore 3D nintendo console, with games that hold up graphic wise. so i bought the games i missed in my collection, before prices go insane like they did on the snes.

that said, N64 prices are going up too, anyway. everything nintendo is ridiculously expensive.

and is it me or do i almost never find GC games in the wild? on local flea markets, there is an abundance of PS2 games, and to a lesser extent xbox. but GC? maybe if you're lucky youll find a fifa game stuck between a bunch of DVD movies.

where are all the gamecube games?

some of my favorite GC games at the moment: rogue squadron II / III, f zero, resident evil 4, wave race, eternal darkness. so much to chose, so little time!

oh, ... and paper mario is in the mail :D

I didnt have a GC when it originally launched as I had a PS2 and xbox but really enjoy it now. I think the controller is really comfortable to hold but the c stick is a little too small for my taste. Makes playing timesplitters 2 quite hard.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I really wish it was just you. Or I guess it would be better to say I wish the good GameCube games were more common. I've seen more baseball games than I care to. I was lucky enough to find Rogue Leader and Wave Race: Blue Storm pretty recently. Not worth much as far as money value goes, but both are very fun games (Rogue Leader is currently my favorite Star Wars game). Still, finds like that for GameCube are so few and far inbetween.

Same here. Gamecube games are uncommon in the wild. Even at resellers booths, which kinda suprises me. I know the GC undersold compared to PS2 and xbox, but I can't imagine it being this much. Are people holding on to their GC games?

been a great gamecube month this one. i bought the following games all in near mint state:
- turok evolution
- resident evil code veronica (upgrade from PS2 version)
- star wars bounty hunter (first time i have this game. bought it since its the best SW game on gamecube beside the rogue squadrons)
- splinter cell (upgrade from PS2 version)
- eternal darkness (upgrade to a mint disc)
- MOH frontline (same)

what a great console the gamecube is. my general feeling, is the library is just slitghly less in quantity than the N64, but its overall quality tops that of the N64. while the GC lost the rare titles, it gained many third party titles. resident evil series, twin snakes, medal of honor, splinter cell, tomb raider, blood omen 2, lord of the rings... and that's on top of the first and second party titles. such third party support lacked on the N64.

i'm at 34 gamecube games now, but i'm hitting a wall as far as collecting goes. I have 45 N64 games and i can readily name a few missing games. but my games on N64 vary in quality. there's the likes of lamborghini, mission impossible, extreme G, which are not bad but not brilliant either. my gamecube collection is much more consistent in quality. even the "worst" game in my collection, blood omen 2, is still very much enjoyable.

that said, i seriously dont know which i prefer, GC or N64. i could ponder this question till the cows come home. i'd play something brilliant like twilight princess and i couldnt imagine the N64 being better, but the next day i play something like perfect dark and the GC doesnt hold a candle anymore...

why is there so little gamecube appreciation though? i wish i could eat my gamecube sometimes, i love it that much  :P
