@action - I agree. I under appreciated the GC in the day, although used to play Double Dash loads with my mates. But I love owning all the Resident Evil games / Medal of Honor games on the system. I agree the N64 lacked third party input and would have benefitted more if game makers wanted to tap into the cart market. That said, we are not comparing like with like so both consoles should be appreciated for what they are. Both awesome consoles.

what a great console the gamecube is. my general feeling, is the library is just slitghly less in quantity than the N64, but its overall quality tops that of the N64. while the GC lost the rare titles, it gained many third party titles.

i'm at 34 gamecube games now, but i'm hitting a wall as far as collecting goes.

why is there so little gamecube appreciation though? i wish i could eat my gamecube sometimes, i love it that much  :P
I totally agree, I love the GameCube a ton. Third party support wasn't as strong as it was for Xbox and PS2 but there's still some really amazing third party games for the cube. Post your collection and we'll be able to suggest some of the lesser well known but still excellent titles. :)

I can't even remember why I originally bought a GC, it may have been for Windwaker but I really liked that console. I think besides Windwaker, I played NFS: Underground the most. Oh and Most Wanted.

I was always disappointed in myself that I didn't go through with buying the GameCube that was bundled with the Game Boy player several years back. I'd still like to get a GC someday. I have a nice little library I can play on my Wii but another console on the shelf wouldn't hurt. :yeah:

I don't see a Mario Kart in there? They're reasonable priced and probably the best in the series, maybe topped by MK8.

Also, Mario Party. Pick up 4 or 5 if you want a cheap one, pick up 6 or 7 if you want mic minigames.

If you like RPGs, go for Tales of Symphonia or Skies of Arcania. Expensive, but worth it.

Also, Odama is said to be unique and pretry decent. Look into that one.

thanks for the suggestions. i've been eying mario kart but holding off since i lack the friends to play it in multiplayer :P

here are some games that i seriously missed on the gamecube, and which make me hold on to my PS2:
- predator concrete jungle. it would be perfect for gamecube: the predator has lots of moves, and the levels provide much opportunity to mess around. it's the one game i'd want ported to the gamecube if i could chose.
- jaws unleashed: an incredible fun game. sorely missed on gamecube.
- the metal gears, which goes without saying really
- castlevania lament of innocense. although i'm happy with my eternal darkness just as much, if not even more
- transformers (atari): again, would be the perfect collect-a-thon for gamecube
- terminator dawn of fate: great atmosphere, great action title. i think it would be a good game for gamecube.

i never cared for the god of wars, killzones and GTA's. i can happily live without those.

@sublime: thanks! Definitely want to check it out.

@action: having firmly establish having zero credibility when it comes to GC, I'll spew advice anyway. Ikaruga (by Treasure) is a glorious but impossible shump. I think we have similar tastes in gameplay, so figured I'd mention it.

yes, ikaruga is very much on my radar :yeah:

and yes, i think we do have similar tastes in gameplay. we both like old fashioned challenging gameplay of the old days but we can at the same time appreciate a great modern game when we see it. 8)

have you tried f zero GX on gamecube yet like i advised you? ;)

Great topic! Love the GameCube to bits. I play its games on the GC rather than the Wii as the component video output is cleaner. Such a fantastic library - Nintendo at its best!

The Gamecube is a great console. N64 is probably my favorite console and is home to my favorite games, but the Gamecube is my largest collection (just from buying them when it was out) and is probably the console I have spent the most time on. I have almost exactly 100 games (96 if I remember correctly) and I have played each and every one of them (though not all to completion and some with my little sister because she wanted me to play games like Bratz with her...) I have beaten most of them though. If anyone wants any suggestions I am more than willing to make some (but just to let you know I am not a big racing or sports game fan so my recommendations for those are limited)

Not for me but for people using flat panels, the new GameCube HDMI mod looks nice. There's a simpler plug & play HDMI cable coming soon too....

I've been picking up games for the GameCube recently and giving it a play again. Going back to the GameCube leave me with mixed feelings; the quality in the games is there and the console is a really solid little lump. :) The down side is that it's missing stuff that other consoles of the same generation had; no permanent widescreen setting (a lot of GameCube games don't support windscreen at all) and no brightness adjustment unless games provided that as an option... and a lot of games don't have this either. That makes the cube less LCD TV friendly... :-/

That's OK, modern TVs suck and CRTs are amazing.
Who even uses non CRTs? :P  ⚽😂

...(I only have one cause the Xbox needs it, and to watch movies from a Windows program made in 1995😆)

So much to say...
GameCube was amazing, pretty under appreciated.

Wind Waker and Metroid Prime tie for best game...or maybe Twilight Princess.

Loved the early days, the water effects of Wave Race, the general blown-away-ness of Rouge Squadron...the infinite replay and multiplayer of Melee.
F-Zero GX - what a masterpiece. The game is over 10 years old and the speed, graphics and intensity is still as amazing as ever.
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door: improved on an already amazing first game.
I put the best part of 100 hours into this game.

Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia, 2 amazing RPGs.

ok, so my RGB cable arrived this day after what seemed like a century, and i've been able to test some games with it. here are my impressions 8)

when i first hooked up my GC with it, the first thing i noticed was the screen was way too bright, and the color settings were way off. i needed to do a lot of work on my TV settings. tested a few games till every game looked great.

and boy, they look great alright.

i'm using my GC on a full 1080 HD screen, the size of a computer screen. this cable is ESSENTIAL in making the GC look playable on such a screen.

with the standard composite cable, games like wind waker and mario sunshine looked awful. a lot of color bleed on the edges of objects, and lots of flickering.

but with the RGB cable all of that is gone. i can now happily use any modern HD TV with my gamecube.

i was positively blown away. games like splinter cell, tomb raider and mario sunshine look unbelievable. the jump from composite to RGB on gamecube is like the jump from composite to component on the PS3. it looks night and day.

300 euro for a gamecube component cable? no thanks. 60 euro for an official RGB cable will do just fine. RGB stands for red green blue, the same color wires you see on the component cables. the difference between the two is marginal; they use different means to achieve the same goal.

Any thoughts on a GameCube Classic Edition? What games would you like to see included if it becomes a reality?

I know it might not seem as likely as the mini editions of Nintendo's cartridge based home consoles but in some ways it still makes sense. In fact, since discs scratch and break more easily than cartridges there may be even more of a market for a GC Mini.

Lastly, even without some sort of fancy compression I figure Nintendo can still fit about 20 GameCube titles on 32 Gigabytes of storage which by 2019 should cost very little.

I'll get the ball rolling with some obvious titles. :)

1) Super Smash Bros. Melee
2) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
3) F-Zero GX
4) Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
5) Super Mario Sunshine

I don't see it happening with the size of GC games. I doubt a lot of people will pay €150 for 10-ish games, but who knows.

Personally, I'd consider swapping Twilight Princess for Windwaker, since Twilight Princess has had more releases. I'd also trow in Pikmin 2 and Star Fox Assault (although Rare is now part of Microsoft, if they can make an N64 mini Nintendo has rare on its side).

What about something expensive like Fire Emblem? Seems possible, although I do not know who owns the rights to the game (since there are some versions on other brand consoles like PS2)

Sooooo my GC collection has grown since my post back in 2014. Not by a lot, mind you. Quality GameCube games are still hard to come by for someone who relies mainly on thrift stores and most of them usually aren't very cheap. Still, I figured it'd be kind of neat to list my collection of GC games as for 2017. :yeah:

Today, I own:

- Super Smash Bros. Melee (complete) (Best Seller)
- WWE Day of Reckoning 1 (complete) (black label) & 2 (w/ case) (black label)
- Sonic Heroes (complete) (Player's Choice)
- Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life (complete) (black label)
- Animal Crossing (w/ Blockbuster case) (uh... black label I guess? the cover art IS legit)
- Mega Man Anniversary Collection (w/ case) (black label)
- Capcom Vs. SNK 2 EO (complete) (black label)
- Naruto: Clash of Ninja 2 (complete) (Player's Choice)
- Sonic Gems Collection (w/ case) (black label)
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (complete) (black label)
- Viewtiful Joe (complete) (Player's Choice)

- Super Mario Sunshine (complete) (Player's Choice)
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (complete) (black label)
- Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (complete) (black label)
- Need for Speed Underground (complete) (black label)
- Dragon Ball Z Budokai (w/ case) (black label)
- F-Zero GX (complete) (black label)
- Donkey Konga (complete) (black label)
- Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat (disc only) (black label... going by the disc :-/ )
- Aggressive Inline (complete) (black label)
- Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (complete) (black label)
- Wave Race: Blue Storm (w/ case) (black label)
- Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (w/ case) (black label)
- Tak and the Power of Juju (complete) (black label)
- Tak 2: The Staff of Dreams (w/ case) (black label)
- Metroid Prime (complete) (black label)
- SSX3 (complete) (black label)
- Lost Kingdom (complete) (black label)
- WarioWare Inc.: Mega PARTY Games (w/ case) (black label)
- Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (complete) (black label)
- Rampage: Total Destruction (complete) (black label)
- Star Fox Adventures (complete) (black label)
- The Fairly OddParents!: Breakin' Da Rules! (complete) (black label)
- BloodRayne (complete) (black label)
- Beach Spikers: Virtua Beach Volleyball (complete) (black label)
- Soul Calibur II (complete) (black label)

Titles in bold were from the original list

Wow... had I known how many times I'd have to type "black label", I'd have just left that part out. In my original list, I said that Day of Reckoning 2 was my favorite GC game. Well, three years later, that has certainly changed. DoR 2 is still one of my favorite games for the system but games like WarioWare Inc., F-Zero GX and Wind Waker among others certainly rank higher on my list. Even Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Super Smash Bros. Melee, games also on the original list, are better in my opinion. Do I know which one is the best of the best? Not really. I need to spend more time with these games to be sure. I know one thing, though: as a long time Mario fan, it's nice to finally have some Mario titles for the GC.

If a GameCube Mini ever becomes a reality, one game I'd absolutely love to see included would be SoulCalibur II as it's probably the best true fighting game on the system. I know many hardcore Nintendo fans own it because Link is in the roster but such a masterpiece of a fighting game deserves a much wider audience.

Another reason that I believe a GC Classic Edition makes sense is because it would allow Nintendo another outlet for GameCube controllers to use with the inevitable Super Smash Bros. game that will eventually appear on the Switch.

I do have reservations about giving away my Gamecube and selling my Game Boy player, but not enough for me to really try to get them back like I'm doing with the 64. I don't know why but I always found myself going back to the 64 version of games because I liked them more even though the Gamecube games are objectively better.

Mario Kart? I prefer 64's battle mode. Gamecube's arenas are too small to me besides Luigi's Mansion

Smash Bros.? I prefer 64's lighter environment (this was the beginning of the games taking themselves too seriously in my opinion but it wasn't an issue for me until Brawl). Also Kirby, Ness and Pikachu's voices in the original were way better.

Mario Tennis? I really can't think of a good reason to prefer the original over the sequel but I still do. Maybe a distinct lack of Birdo? Maybe the sequel got a little too silly at times? Maybe hearing Mario say "Come on, come on" over and over again was just too much. Now that I think of it, a lot of it has to do with the sound design.

Mario Party? I had all 4 gamecube iterations but Mario Party 2 just does it better for me.

Maybe I just prefer my characters to have jagged edges? The Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 era was the first where graphics really started to take priority. For a lot of games this worked like Zelda and Melee, but it was at this point that the Mario games I played the most - the sports and party spin-offs - began feeling saccharine to me.

The high point though was definitely the controller. I still maintain that playing N64 Virtual Console games on the Wii with a Gamecube controller is the peak of gaming euphoria for me. It's just too bad that more games didn't make it there.

I mostly agree with your assessment, ItalianBaptist. Many GameCube games just don't feel right compared to their N64 counterparts. For example, Wave Race: Blue Storm and 1080 Avalanche both feel inferior to the previous iterations. Even Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour doesn't feel as polished as Mario Golf 64 which is very surprising because it was developed by the same company Camelot Software Planning. Nonetheless, the GameCube still has enough masterpieces in it's library like Metroid Prime and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker to make a GC Classic Edition highly desirable, IMHO.

By the way, to prove how timeless Super Smash Bros. Melee is, the game is being played competitively this weekend at The Big House event in Michigan. Isn't that amazing?!

@ItalianBaptist Like you, I probably prefer SSB64 over Melee but my personal favorite game in the series so far is Project M. When my friend Steven and I play PM 3.6 we're usually on the edge of our seat because each match is so exhilarating.

I feel like I can be a bit too negative sometimes, so it would be good for me to also mention all the great games that the Gamecube got that others didn't or the N64 didn't do better in my opinion. For the most part these are the ones that made the most use of the graphical upgrade and still hold well today.

Each 3D Zelda game is its own experience at this point so Wind Waker and Twilight Princess can be looked at separately from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask and they're all great in their own ways. Can't speak for them gameplay wise (seeing as I've still never really played a Zelda game) but graphically both brought something new and gorgeous to the table.

F-Zero GX, what little I played of it, was a masterpiece. Same with Metroid Prime.

Pokemon Colosseum and XD made the most of the transition to full 3D and gave us a serious take on the franchise. Colosseum was one I rented over and over again from Blockbuster back in the day.

I didn't include the two main series Mario games we got - Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion - in my previous indictment because like the Zelda games they went out of their way to be separate individual experiences and had very strong environments because of it. I may not have liked Sunshine's gameplay compared to 64 bur I can't deny how great its theming is.

And even though they're not gamechangers from a graphical perspective I can't deny how fantastic Kirby Air Ride and Animal Crossing were. Air Ride never got a sequel but Animal Crossing did and I still prefer the Gamecube version. The Animalese sounds better, you've got the collectible NES games, and it really benefitted as a port because of the Gamecube's internal clock.

I'd be up for a Gamecube mini. I wonder if it's "nostalgic" enough yet though. I mean, they'll sell 'em all. What am I even talking about?
