Pre-Ordering Games; Do you do it?

With a little Christmas gaming money burning a hole in my pocket, I'm thinking about pre-ordering Mario Kart 8. Being a retro gamer, I don't pre-order games, but I'm pretty excited for this one. Still not sure a pre-order (without any other inducement) is worthwhile.

So do you pre-order games? Why/why not? Under what circumstances?

I do from time to time, although my Amazon account would currently make you think I do it all the time. I currently have The Evil Within, Dying Light, MGS V: Ground Zeroes, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, The Last Guardian X_D , Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII all on pre-order there. The reasons I pre-order, especially when I could buy (some of) them at Walmart for a discount? Mainly for the e-mails I get when release dates change and when special deals/pre-order bonuses arise. Plus, I don't have to pay for them until the day they release whereas a lot of other sites charge you immediately. And if it looks like my store will get the game then I cancel the pre-order before it ships. Otherwise, it just makes me feel pro-active about snagging my most looked forward to titles.

I don't preorder games anymore. I used to back when gaming wasn't so mainstream and stores only got limited quantities of a new title. Nowadays, stores stock up so well that I just walk in and purchase a game when the mood strikes me.

Mario Kart 8 does look fantastic so I'm hoping that a special Wii U bundle is available with the game at launch. That's when I'll finally get the Wii U - when Mario Kart 8 is released.

If I don't get anything for my pre-order (poster, bonus dlc, whatever) I won't. I only pre-order games if I get something for giving them five bucks in advance, otherwise I just wait and pay the whole game on release day!

I never pre-ordered anything in my life, I believe. Never had an item I wanted sell out so I know I don't have to race to get anything. I can only see a point of pre-ordering if there is a discount of some sort for doing so, which never happens here so....

I used to pre-order everything back when the N64 was in its heyday. But that was when Wal-Mart was the ONLY option for games in a 60 mile radius and they'd only get a few copies of a game in at a time. (Growing up in the boonies)

Now-a-days, I only pre-order if there are goodies, or if it's a collector's edition of something.

This is what I was talking about, pre-ordering done right. With some kind of bonus: http://mynintendonews.com/2014/01/23/grab-a-handy-yoshi-egg-game-case-with-uk-pre-orders-of-yoshis-new-island/

yeah IF and only IF i pre-orer a game, it better come with a pre-bonus or something very excited so you have to give them your money. otherwise it's worthless. I mostly only pre-order on limited edition stuff (GTA5) and limited console like the 25th Ann Wii bundle. otherwise I just pick it up same day or montsh later half price.

Yes, I preorder if they come with extras. For example, COD with extra DLC maps. But I have mixed feelings on this. As a retro gamer, I always search for the best deals. If I can wait until the price drops, I wait. :yeah:

So, I'm thinking of pre-ordering Pokken Tournament ( :Wii U: ) but the truth is, I've never pre-ordered a game before. This is one of the few releases that have really hyped me. If anyone is wondering, the pre-order bonus is a Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card, but that doesn't concern me that much.

Can one of you all tell me if pre-ordering is worth it?

Well from my experience as a gamer and a former worker of a big video game store (not naming it but if you live in the US I bet you'll guess it first try), pre-ordering is not worth it. Now this is my opinion and others may disagree but here is why I feel that way; Years ago I pre-ordered SSX for the xbox 360. They advertised Eddie Wachowski, who was my favorite player in SSX Tricky for PS2, so I pre-ordered it. They also said it was a limited release so I wanted the code before they were all gone. Got the game months later and Eddie. Game was fun but a couple weeks after its release there was an update that had minor bug fixes and 2 new characters, Eddie and some other guy. So they gave away my pre-order bonus to everyone else and lied to me about the limited release.

Now as a former worker of a large video game store I soon found out that pre-order was just a quick way to guarantee money. I originally started working here thinking that because I know so much about video games and I am a super friendly person, I would make a great asset to this shop. I was very good at helping costumers. I was able to assist elderly and parents who had no idea what they were doing, people who were die hard fans, and straight up nerds that just liked to talk about anything related to video games. I once had the boss hang up the phone I was using to talk to the customer because he just wanted to talk about video games, it was a good 15 minute convo. Anyway... What I quickly learned about working there is that they don't really care about how good at helping a customer out but how good you were at getting pre-orders, and membership card subscriptions. I didn't really like the idea of asking a customer repeatedly about pre-ordering games or buying a membership card, when the clearly didn't want it. So I didn't. As an employee there you are required to get X amount of both memberships and pre-orders and if you don't you get put up for a review, after 3 reviews your fired. So this causes its employees to be very persistent with customers and sometimes even modify the truth. I once told a customer he had money on a pre-order that came out months ago and if he wanted to use that towards a different game. He said he forgot he pre-ordered it and was happy I pointed it out. My boss was quite upset because my total score for the day was -1 and I should not have pointed that out to him. What a pre-order does for them is to lock a customer into a purchase of the game. Even if they only put $5 down they will eventually come back and pay off the rest of the sum. This also makes sure the customer doesn't buy the game at another store because they already have money invested into one somewhere else. You can ask for a refund and they will gladly give you one back but more often than not people buy the game there or forget about their pre-orders.

There were other reasons which I can bring up if you want.

Maybe its just the way some stores do business but it has left the idea of Pre-orders a bit shady to me.

Hmm...
You bring up some good points. Same thing happened with MGSV:GZ. The console exclusive missions were added for both, so whatever system you bought it own became arbitrary. Although, in this specific case, it's almost guaranteed that Pokkén is a console-exclusive.

Now I'm conflicted on the idea. The way you put it, it seems as if there's no point. Which I'm not saying there is, because I'm neutral. That's why I'm asking for help in the first place. As for your "other points", please list 'em.
...
I'm pretty sure I know what store you're talking about.

I agree with Pimpin Mainer that overall pre-ordering is harmful to the actual industry. Even when you are getting something extra out of it I feel that it does more harm than good for the industry as a whole and the quality of games in the long run. It encourages bad marketing practices from companies who care more about getting preorders than making actually good games at release. They benefit from misleading marketing that gets consumers to believe a game is better than it will be because that gets them the preorders. Then, they carve content out of the game and make it either cost extra as day one dlc or as a preorder benefit. Those things a lot of the time should be in the game. Back in the N64 days you got a game and it was complete. Not an entire story (such as in the Batman games where they locked Harley Quinn, and Catwoman away) behind a pay wall or preorder exclusive. Not to mention store exclusive preorders mean that even if you want all of the extras, you can't have them unless you preorder from multiple stores. It is silly...

Here is a good video on the subject that I recommend to anyone who is debating the topic. (It is a few years old but it relevant) There are also lots of videos about this subject on Youtube if you search for it.

So one thing people often say is good about pre-ordering is that you get your game on the release date and you get to play it before most people. This is true most of the time but there were times when I was working there that they didn't have enough to ship to our location so a bunch of people that already paid for the game didn't get to have it on release date and had to wait. Better yet other stores like Walmart had extra copies. So those people had to deal with getting a refund, which is not as easy as it sounds, and then go buy it in another store. This happened for a couple games. I think Skyrim was one of them. You would think that because there is a digital database with all the info on all those pre-orders they would be able to at least ship the right amount of copies to the store, or better yet don't sell pre-orders that you don't have to sell.

The only games I ever put a deposit down on for pre orders were Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask for N64. Also, if you are an Amazon Prime member you get a 20% discount on pre orders and new release games.

I was a Zelda fan before this game came out but I remember being 15-16 years old and finding out about the collectors edition and begging my grandma for the $75 to purchase it. It came with the gold cartridge, a subscription to Nintendo Power, and an Ocarina of Time t-shirt, which I still have.

My Pre-order history (or "progress" if you will):
1). MK8. Best buy. Perfect. There was some kind of gasoline card bonus I don't think I used.
2). Bayonetta 2/1. Gamestop. Glad I did. 0 non-pre-ordered copies available on launch day despite much anticipation and popular demo.
3). Splatoon. Target. Got my copy but not the promised water pistol. Glad to have been an early adopter but new copies never in short supply.
4). Rodeo Sky Soldier. Not exactly a pre-order; bought it pre-launch on ebay; really wanted the first print with Wii disc pack-in. Game is not good; now sells new at 50% discount; and Wii disc promo still available; likely will not see a second printing
5). Mighty No. 9. Game delayed again without new date set. No communication at all from Gamestop. Wondering if it will ever be released and if so whether the promised first run goodies will be included....

Zelda Skyward Sword Limited Edition comes to mind with not available on release date. it was the only case where I saw that so far.

I've never been on the pre-order hype. Modern games I can usually wait a little while before I get them. I usually wait For reviews or friends comments to see if I actually want the game. Also, for your likes of CoD, which I only play to rinse people online, the servers usually have teething problems anyway which is just frustrating after you pay so much money, so nice to get them once that had all calmed down.

Historically, not much. My mom pre-ordered Ocarina of Time for me back in the day. My wife pre-ordered Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for me a few years back.

I think that is about it for me.

Ugh, Gamestop.com pre-order gone bad.

In January, I pre-ordered Mighty No. 9 in advance of its 2/15 release date from Gamestop.com, and selected in store pickup. This was against my better judgment, since this was the store that barely honored my reserve copy of Bayonetta 1-2.

It's now May and they've again missed their new Spring window (though a June date is promised). I tried cancelling my pre-order yesterday and today. First, online, but there was no option. Then, by email, but more information was requested. The email at least had an "800" number. Next, I called the 800 number, only to be told I need to contact the store. Then, I called the store at least 6 times today during its posted business hours. No one picks up, and then the line goes dead. Horrendous.

I could just not pick up the game whenever it comes it, but then I get charged $5 for nothing.

So, new plan. I called my credit card company. They told me if the $5 charge ever comes through, dispute it and I will not have to pay it. One call.

I cannot believe Gamestop.com had this many hoops; will never pre-order from it again.

I've rarely preordered games. I think this is the extent of my preordering

Star Fox Zero (20% discount on Amazon)
GTA V Collectors Edition (free poster)
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (poster?)
Gran Turismo 5 (couple extra cars)

I never pre order for the bonus but rather just to get the game the first day it comes it since I want it so bad. But rarely do I want a game so bad that I pay full retail. I almost always buy used. Pretty much the only thing I buy new are GTA games and Wii U games (since Wii U games are sometimes hard to find used locally, especially the good ones)
Current 64 Collection: Grey, Jungle, Fire, Ice, Smoke, Watermelon, Grape, Gold, JP Blue/Clear, Daiei Hawks
Current Game Count: 324
Current Controller Count: 32
