There's trouble in the Mushroom Kingdom as Mario Kart 8 has serious item balance issues when played on-line. Fans of the game are already calling for a patch to address these problems. Stay tuned for more information on this developing story...

Really Grizz?
I think yesterday I read an article stating MK8 had the most balanced item set of the franchise. Now I'm curious.

I don't think those chaps with 2400+ ratings that have been whipping me are too upset. X_D

Just got the game last night and still working on Golds for 50cc so haven't spent a ton of time with it. Haven't gone online yet either. I want to get most of the stuff unlocked first.

Got several of your friend requests, so thanks for that! Is there a N64Forever MK8 community set up already?

BDR EDIT: Great idea :yeah: See this announcement.

Just a tip guys, if 50cc and 150cc are too easy for you, you can just do the 150cc and your trophies go down to 100 and 50. So lets say i get gold on star cup 150cc, I now have golds on 100 and 50 as well

3 stared all of the 50 cc races and have 3 stared all bar 2 of the 100 cc races too. Moving onto the 150cc only have 1gold cup, it gets kinda hard up there, or at least it does for me.

Talking about item balance, I haven't played much online because it keeps coming up with an error. Although when playing local multiplayer I seem to be getting the coins a heck of a lot, I think when collecting boxes I got coins 5 times in a row at one point :nope:

Item balance is just fine IMNSHO; both online and local.
In fact i feel it has never been as balanced since Super Mario Kart.
In Mario Kart Wii if you got to first position in a race you knew a spiny blue shell of death was almost inevitable but now they are much rarer.

BTW: I love the new Piranha Plant, it can really wreak havoc if you deploy it at the right time!

BTW 2: those anti-grav collisions are a blast. A bit scary at first but very useful, in particular in online matches

I'm now up over 1500 rating which has come mostly from placing around 3rd or 4th when racing on-line. Rarely do I get 1st and occasionally I come in dead last which is ordinarily an uncommon occurrence for me in Mario Kart games.

Just got this game as a gift today and am working my way through the cups now. Still on 50cc, but I'll get through it eventually. May take longer than usual, though, since I'm juggling a few games. Oh and I haven't played online yet, but I will soon.

Andy, a Mario Kart 8 friendly racing night is a wonderful idea but you gotta give us more than just a few hours notice. Why don't you set up something for Friday so maybe we can get a full lobby?

BDR EDIT: You got it. See this.

So I cleared the 50cc cups today. Decided to take a small break from the single player to dip into the online multiplayer and WOW did I ever get whooped badly on those first few races. These gamers came to play. I did get better as I kept going, though, and even came in 1st on my last race (up to this post).

Really loving this game. My favorite course is the Electrodome (even though I totally wish they called it "Club Nintendo" X_D ) I think it's the music.

Won my FIRST online race last night (but still only W). Baby Mario, the rocket looking Mach 8 car and monster tires in Sherbet Land (snow course). I think everyone was racing underground and blowing each other up, while I stayed above ground (and wondering where the heck everyone was and the race-wrecking items were). Maybe the big tires helped too (???). There seems to be conflicting info out there as to whether traction stats increase performance "off-course" or "off-road" . . . .

Anyway, anyone have a favorite course yet? Favorite racing combo?

Although I keep saying that I don't really like Mario Kart 8, I find myself spending a ton of time with it. :-8

Favorite course: Thwomp Ruins

Favorite Combo:

Character - Roy

Vehicle - Biddy Buggy

Tires - Cyber Slick

Glider - Cloud Balloon

I'm still experimenting, though, so my config may change. >_<

Managed to get three gold stars for all 100cc Cups today and i've moved on to the 150cc class where the AI is a lot tougher.
The CPU racers are more likely to use the shortcuts or get in your way.
And they use their items a lot smarter as well, making it pretty hard to finish in first position.

Just hit 2001 a VR odyssey today.

You guys know I love the Mario Kart franchise but sometimes MK8 is so bad that I literally find myself laughing out loud. The item balance is in desperate need of some fine tuning!

I know what you mean, Grizz. I was playing last night and got 3 red shells while in 2nd place... TWICE. I mean... I used them.... but it just felt dirty.

Few things are sadder than getting a green shell when you're in 11th place. ;_;

I finished all of the cups in 100cc and decided to move up to 150cc. The CPU in that class humbled me on my first go at it.

I finally picked up my free Mario Kart 8 poster that I got for pre-buying the game from GameStop. Here's a pic.

why is it bad to have red shell in 2nd place and coins in 5th place ? I call that justice. a fair chance to everyone to have the same items in any place they race on. it's a racing game after all. it doesnt rely on bonus item anymore wihch is freaking good IMO. you could suck a tons and finish first place before cuz blue shell, canon and triple red shell after triple red shell. it was pissing me off a ton when it happen while playing with my friends. they were bombarding me like a mofo every race.

Hey, I represented us well last night while racing online. Was doing my normal blah 6th to 8th place runs when N64 Rainbow Road was selected. I snapped to and told myself it was my solemn duty to www.N64Forever.com to show these whipper snappers a thing or two about this legendary :n64: course.

There was a lot of chaos as you might expect on that short, tight course, but in the end, I sailed though the finish line in  FIRST PLACE  (only the second time that's happened, lol). I had a few more good and not so good runs after that, but I went to bed a happy man :yeah: :n64: Forever!

@Cabanon I get what you are saying. But for me Mario Kart has always been about bringing players of varying skill levels together. I think giving the karts further back a leg up keeps every race frantic and exciting. For me, it is what it is.

That said though, I can see your point, that skilled players shouldn't lose a race simply because they were in 1st place on the last corner of the last lap. One thing I've always thought would be cool, especially as an online option, was a "Tournament Mode" where all item rarity is equal across the field, and the only items available are bananas, green shells, and coins. Doubt Nintendo will ever go that route though. =P

Thanks Nuno. Sure you will join us soon enough.

@cabanon, kartmaster. I think MK8 plays a bit more fair to the leaders than MK Wii. I actually won wire to wire last night (on another course), which NEVER did with MK Wii. Speed seems to be the main currency for MK8; enough of it and you can maintained lead, or at least your place with the top 3 ahead of the pack. I actually get far more trashed if I'm in the pack at say 5th and I go through an item box. You get hit like 3 times in a row and then 12th place it is. I would like a little more of a respawn/invincibility period, but really not complaining b/c is a great game.
