Even though I've only played a couple of hours now, I have to agree with bluedog.
I played every cup of Grand Prix 50cc once and never lost a race (it was pretty easy).
The next day I decided to try 1 online match and the entire time it was pretty chaotic. I was bouncing from 3rd to 10th really quickly because once I got hit, I would be pummeled 2 or 3 more times before I was able to really start moving again. I believe I finished 5th which I thought was pretty good since I remember reading that everyone was doing okay as well. ^_^

Yesterday I finally got a decent amount of free time to dedicate to MK8 and I played the first 3 Grand Prix 100cc races. Once again I found them pretty easy but on the last third of the last lap of the last race I got blue shelled and ended up second for one of them so that was a little annoying >_< , but I've still found it easier than MK Wii when leading.

Then I decided to try my hands out at online again and I found it surprisingly very easy. I could tell that none of the people had very high scores (highest I raced against was 1200) but I won almost every race and didn't face too much assault at the front of the pack, again like what Bluedog described. I did periodically use my items though until I held on to a "sonic boom" or whatever that speaker-looking item is as it saved me from one or two blue shells (its nice that you can get that item while in first).

As for my overall thoughts about MK 8 so far though, I love it. The graphics overall are amazing and probably my favourite improvement. Making some of the old tracks work with the gravity shifts is also pretty cool. I don't remember the name of my favourite track right now, but its something to do with going into the clouds and there is a lightning speed pads, etc. I like that one the most because the music is from Mario Galaxy I think and it brings back good memories ^_^
As for some negatives, what is up with holding one item at a time? I believe every other Mario Kart has allowed you to hold things like bananas behind you and then pick up another item, and so I've had a difficult time adjusting to not being able to do that.
Also, I find the item distribution strange weird and many items seem way rarer than others, even when in last place. For example, coins and green shells are the main things I see right now, where before it used to be bananas and fake item boxes (glad those are gone). The newly introduced items also seem the rarest to me. I was playing with a friend locally last night and I was 5th when all of a sudden I got this "MK 8" item (no idea if it has a name) that was made up of 8 items like banana, shell, mushroom all circling the kart. I'd never heard of it, seen it, or gotten it during my hours played already which I thought was strange (my brief time with that item also confused me about its value because I couldn't tell how to choose an item out of the revolving ones so it was hard to use the one I wanted). Also, playing locally was the first time I got (or saw) the boomerang my friend got a fire flower which was also news to me. I have yet to see the piranha plant as well.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it a lot so far even with the strange item system so far, and I'm sure I'll get used to that :)

Well I've finally gotten every gold trophy in all of the classes on Mario Kart 8. I didn't get triple gold stars on all of them yet, but that's something I go for every now and again. For now, it's mainly online racing and battling for me. This is definitely one of the best Mario Kart games I've ever played and I am definitely glad to have gotten this as a gift from my parents.

As far as I can tell, the only big problem I have with the game is that the racing and battle modes share the same tracks. Come on, Nintendo! I loved the more arena-styled stages from past Mario Kart games. Not sure if this started with Mario Kart 7 or if this is something new, but I just hope they fix that in later installments. It's still not enough to stop me for playing this one for years to come. :yeah:

P.S. - Anyone else here wish they could drive around Peach's castle at the Royal Raceway track just like on Mario Kart 64?

You mean the communication error glitch?

Yep. Seems like the online racing server (or whatever the technical term is) was struggling the last 24 hours.

UPDATE: Played for about a solid hour at 5PMish NYC time without disconnection. Maybe Big N is getting this under control. Seems fixable.

Those wanting to get the most out of Mario Kart 8 may want to use this handy vehicle builder app.

MK8 Kart Builder

Seems like most of the really skilled players on-line are using heavy characters now. I'm mostly using Wario although I occasionally play as Donkey Kong for a little variety. Doesn't really matter who I use, I still win or lose about the same.

Mario Kart 8 is a drop-dead gorgeous game and even though I don't win as consistently as I did in Mario Kart Wii, I'm still having a really good time with it.

Mario Kart 8 Mercedes Car DLC Coming West

"European and North American Mario Kart 8 owners are set to get the Mercedes GLA car DLC already confirmed for Japan.

The development was confirmed by Nintendo's Twitter account, with a vague summer release window also revealed."

In my opinion, the DLC should be free as it's essentially an advertisement for Mercedes. I'd also like to see Nintendo fix the item balance issues as a patch associated with the DLC.

It will be free in Japan so it's probably a safe bet that it will be available free of charge in our regions as well.
And i'm pretty sure that Mercedes paid quite handsomely for this prominent product placement so everybody wins.

Here's another resource for those of you who enjoy tuning your karts as much as actually racing them.

Mario Kart 8 Stats Calculator

It's always hard balancing games that have several variables and MK8 is no exception. Right now, while racing on-line in the higher VR races, you see heavy characters like Bowser, Donkey Kong, Rosalina or Metal Mario almost exclusively. Hopefully Nintendo's first patch for the game will give lighter characters a buff that makes them more competitive.

As of now, these are my 5 favorite tracks in Mario Kart 8.

1) Mario Kart Stadium

2) GBA Mario Circuit

3) Thwomp Ruins

4) Mario Circuit

5) N64 Royal Raceway

Random Mario Kart thought for today: I like the N64 original Toad's Turnpike music better than the remixed version from Mario Kart 8. Thoughts?

Bowsers Castle. Love the soundtrack and the challenge.
Bowser's Castle has one of the best musical scores in the game, IMHO. :yeah:

Mario Kart 8 Music - Bowser's Castle

Twisted Mansion has some incredible music too. I love the way this theme has a sort of Danny Elfman vibe to it.

Is it me or are the kids online getting faster?!?!? My goodness, I barely can manage a VERY occasional 2nd or 3rd place. And it seems like the bikes with less heavies are on the rise . . . .

I'm at just over 3200 VR and all I see are heavies, either on bikes or karts, on-line. :-/

Just earned the golden tires this morning by beating all the Time Trial staff ghosts. Man, some of those ghosts can be a bear! Here are three that caused me the most trouble.

1) Bone Dry Dunes: At first I hated this track because of its sharp turns but after racing on it so many times I've actually come to love it. The music for this track has got a catchy Spanish flair that I really enjoy.

2) Twisted Mansion: The ghost on this track is surprisingly challenging considering it's not a heavy character.

3) Dolphin Shoals: This staff ghost runs a very competitive line that's tough to beat without the right kart combo.

So now I have the gold kart and gold tires and I'll probably keep playing Mario Kart 8 regularly until I eventually earn the gold glider. After that I'll take a break by sinking my teeth in to Pikmin 3. :D

Child's play compared to beating the Bone Dry Dunes Time Trial staff ghost. X_D

BTW, I'm now over 3300 VR. It's actually pretty easy to gain VR when you're racing against people with 4000 VR or higher. Even if I place 7th or 8th I still get points.

* Random MK8 thought for the day: Without the ability to carry two items, the triple red shell has become overpowered.

Just hit 5005 VR. I have to say that it is getting harder to gain now. Often I am the one with the highest vr in group. And everybody is also very good at that level, so winning every time is hard.

A win gives 8-12
2nd 7-8
3rd around 5
4th around 3
5th nothing

If I'm lucky I can join a grp with 7000+ but then we are only 3-6 people, so the win-loss ratio pulls you down again harder if you loose. I saw a 9800vr the other day, that's just insane. He got 5 Points for win.

Wow, darklink, that is a great VR!!

I am stalled out at 2100. I think my racing lines are very good, drift and boost a ton, but I am still struggling in the "kill zones" (after item boxes). Shell fwd, shell backwards, drag item, it just does seem to work for me for 3 full laps. Probably need a vehicle change and work with that in the time trials for awhile. Frustrating (but still intensely fun).

I had the same problem, so I changed my setup. I have a pretty high win ratio with this. (Top 3 in 8/10 Races)
Grizz already pointed out that time trials should sacrifice every other stat for speed.

However in online battle mode I go for maximum handling und acceleration, I run:
-The Rocket Bike
-Small Tires
-MK8TV Glider
-with Rosalina or Waluigi

This lets me boost out of the kill zones when hit faster than anybody else and I can attach myself to others for wind shadow boost more easy. Also I can cut corners with this hardcore. Even if somebody rams me with his cart and my direction changes, I can start a new drift even while in corner and still cut the straightest line.

5005 VR, OMG! :omg:

Figures that a member from Germany would be the master racer.

I'm hovering around 3700 VR with my goal being to collect 10,000 coins so I can finally get the Golden Glider. Seems to be taking a lot longer than I thought it would. <_<

You have to play with friends to achieve that the fastest way.
The collected coins of all 4 players will count towards the achievement.

40 per race = 160 per GP
1000/160 = 62,5

That's 63 Grand Prix's. Not too bad. Otherwise you need 250GP's or 1000 races, that will just take forever

@DarkLink: hey, i took your advice and my online fortunes are definitely improving! Going with DK/jet bike/rollers/clouds, which has same stats as the setup you recommended. Kill zones are becoming less of a problem and finishing 2-6 is happening most of the time. Still some growing pains learning a completely different drift than my heavy/F1 setup, but getting there. Thanks again for the pro tip!
