Nice one, Grizz!

Having been using the Clouds for acceleration reasons nearly exclusively, I was really impressed with the triangle kite (not golden, sadly) last night. So much faster in the air than the clouds.

Loved racing with Shy Guy, slicks, F1 and Kite. Solid performances (and so easy to handle), but no checkered flags. Went back to DK/rollers/comet/kite and held my own against a small but stacked group. When I finished ahead of some dude with a VR of 7,000+, I called it a night.

Today i was riding my Vespa into the city when i noticed one of those multi-level car transporter trucks.
For a brief moment i wanted to use it as a launch ramp but then i remembered i wasn't driving on Toad Turnpike anymore.

SDCC 2014: Take On the SDCC 2014 Mario Kart 8 Tournament Winners Online

"Nintendo of America is not only hosting local Mario Kart 8 tournaments at San Diego Comic-Con this week, it's letting people from all over the world race against the crowned champions.

From Thursday to Sunday, there will be online Mario Kart 8 tournaments for players to join and compete against winners in the Comic-Con contests. Nintendo is mixing up the mode each time, so players can face off with Bob-ombs only or bananas only, to name a few of the stipulations..."

With a nod to DarkLink, Grizz and Boomdiers, I wanted to let you guys know I (finally) had a great night of MK8 online racing. Three checkered flags and a bunch of top 3 finishes in full fields.

I've tried so many different combinations and I'm fairly convinced that following the Prima rankings blindly is not advisable. And for as much Super Heavy Weight talk as there is (and I'm back to that weight class), I see great performances online with the metals, luigi, even shyguy, so I dunno, but I think there might be some attributes Prima and other sources do not adequately account for. You just need to find what works for you.

The other thing I've reconciled with myself about is that I simply prefer carts over bikes. I just love that measured recklessness you need to drift tight around a hairpin with a kart; the bikes might corner better, but do not demand such white-knuckle maneuvers. This point is not really about finishing 1st, it's about enjoying the game.

Anyway, hope you all are still having as much fun with MK8 as I am. Great game.

I'm loving it to death with my favorite driver being Larry :)

I got a 5X3 foot poster that I hung near my TV for the release. A Nintendo hoarder I know locally had it and gave it to me for $2. It went so well for the release of the game, I had a huge party where lots of friends came over to experience the first Kart in HD :D

I'm just the opposite of Bluedog in that it really doesn't matter much what configuration I use I still place about the same when racing on-line. Most of the time I use Wario as my driver although I occasionally swap him out for Donkey Kong.

HUGE DLC UPDATE COMING SOON!!!!

You want a course map on the TV screen? You'll get it!

You want to know how many coins you've accumulated towards that Golden Glider? You'll get it!

You want three new karts without manufacturer affiliation? Well, sorry, you wouldn't get it. But here's a consolation prize: THREE new Mercedes karts, one of which looks like the Classic Dragster (Nostalgia 1 in PAL land)from MK Wii :yeah:

Being released 8/27 in Japan; hopefully same date in our respective regions

This week i have been playing a lot of online Battle Mode matches.
I honestly don't understand all the wailing and gnashing of teeth because Nintendo supposedly ruined Battle Mode by removing the dedicated arenas.
In my opinion, the old fashioned Battle Mode was boring and uninteresting but now it's much improved.
The varied courses offer plenty of possibilities for different strategies and also seem to provide a more level playing field (no pun intended).

It was pretty shocking that this wasn't offered as an option from the very beginning. :-/

Hopefully Nintendo's patch will also allow me to use the gamepad as a rear-view mirror now that the map will be on the TV screen.

Agreed. Though i suspect Big N was trying to promote gamepad use/integration by putting the map on the game pad (which was far better than the default horn)!

Wanted to share a quick story with the moral being don't fire backwards at the finish line.

We've all done it. As you are about to cross the finish line, you fire a shell or banana backwards in celebration, frustration or relief. Granted, it's not the most sportsmen thing to do. But in Grand Prix mode, I always thought it was a no-lose proposition and just maybe I hit my character's "rival". It is not!

As I was racing in mirror mode in hopes of winning the gold kart, I was finishing a tough race in second. As i was inches from the finish line, I shelled backwards. I was no sooner chomped by a bumper mounted piranha plant. It seems my shell provided the necessary boost to reach my kart, chomp me, and cause me to drop to fourth. DOH!

Needless to say, I'm trying to mend my ways, lol.

Mercedes Benz Karts arrive as free downloadable content

Mario Kart 8 news

Although the Wii comfortably outsold PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Nintendo’s latest console, the Wii U, hasn’t been as successful. That’s left Nintendo open to ideas it might previously have dismissed. For example, next week sees the launch of free downloadable content for Mario Kart 8 that adds three Mercedes Benz models to the game’s list of wacky cartoon vehicles. Naturally, the sturdily engineered German automobiles have been given cute, bulbous makeovers and are just as susceptible to spinning out when they hit a banana skin as the game’s existing karts, but this still marks a significant departure for the usually highly conservative Japanese game-maker. There will be a special Mercedes Cup online tournament available to players with an internet connection from 27 Aug (the 22nd anniversary of the launch of the very first Mario Kart) to 23 Sep.

Zelda, F-Zero, and Animal Crossing Content Coming to Mario Kart 8

Quote:

Mario Kart 8 is getting some substantial downloadable content starting in November. New characters, tracks, and karts will be added to the game featuring content from many of Nintendo's other franchises, including The Legend of Zelda, F-Zero, and Animal Crossing.

This content will come in the form of two DLC packs, each of which consists of three characters, four vehicles, and eight tracks (some new, and some old). Some of the new tracks will be set in Zelda and Animal Crossing locales, while Mario Kart Wii level Wario's Gold Mine makes a return.

Each update will include:

3 new characters
4 new vehicles
8 new courses

The first of the two packs--The Legend of Zelda pack, coming this November--will include Link, Tanooki Mario, and Cat Peach as characters. The DLC will also include the Blue Falcon from F-Zero as a drivable kart.

The second pack--the Animal Crossing pack, coming in May--includes the Villager, Isabelle, and Dry Bowser. By buying both packs, which will be available individually for 7.00 GBP (an official price hasn't been announced for the US yet) or in a bundle, you'll also get eight different colors for Yoshi and eight different colors for Shy Guy.

Details on the packs were posted to the Nintendo UK online store here and here earlier today. An image for the Zelda pack appears to show Excitebike and F-Zero levels, while the other pack shows off a new, Animal Crossing-themed stage.

Whoa!

Edit: Now that I'm not on my phone...

I'm not a huge fan of the DLC direction everything is going, but I have to admit, that is a great amount of content for $12 (US bundled price). The 16 courses alone are worth that easily.

I have to say I'm almost shocked that characters from other game universes are being added, but I guess once you put a Mercedes in the game, you've already jumped the shark. :P

I generally hate paying for DLC but in this case I don't really mind given what you get for the money. I'm so looking forward to driving the Blue Falcon from F-Zero in MK8! :w00t:

The long awaited Benz update is live in the US! The new cars are fully customizable. The new benz tires appear to have the same stats as the Standards, but I could not tell if the cars had unique stats. The cars can be (and were!) used online.

In a somewhat ironic development, I earned my golden kite after my first Benz race (but the new stat tracker is pretty cool regardless).

Random thoughts about the update:

1) Finally, an onscreen mini map! :w00t:

2) The Mercedes W 25 Silver Arrow is fast! I beat my previous Moo Moo Meadows Time Trial ghost by a full second with it.

3) Checked my stats and I have over 15,000 coins!

I love free Downloadable Content (DLC) although now I'm counting the days until the next DLC in November. :-8

is there any way to buy the DLCs even if I dont own a console ? LOL

all these MK8 talks is getting me excited to play it, but :cussfit: I cant afford it. If I could secure the DLCs, at least i'd have a reason to buy it in the future !
