Java Virus

My neighbor acquired some weird virus on their computer when they got a pop-up asking them to update Java. They trusted Java so they went ahead and clicked the update button.

I tried doing a system restore to a previous date and it fails every time. BTW, they're using Windows 8.1, if it matters.

I also ran Malware Bytes and it seems that something is still going on although it's not as bad as it was before. I reset the browser (Internet Explorer 11) to the default settings and deleted all cookies. Further still, I went in to the programs settings and removed unknown programs that had gotten on the computer that day.

Any ideas how to address this nasty virus?

My neighbors ran the full scan of Microsoft Security Essentials and that seems to have resolved the issue.

There seems to be a new security hole. It happend to me yesterday.

I was browsing the web just like normal. I noticed an advertising banner not showing properly, suddently a popup appeared that my flash player wasn't up to date, then before I could even read the message a new page loaded that looked like the Adobe Flash Player download site. Next a download started automaticly and when it finished it didn't even have the Adobe icon, just a generic Installer symbol.

This all all happened in a matter of seconds and without me doing anything, nope I didn't even click the "faulty" advertising banner.
And anyone that has every updated his flash player knows that you normally have to click through several steps before finally the download starts. Besides I use Chrome so I don't even need to update my flash player since flash is integrated in Chrome.

So I was a little surprised what the :cussfit: just happend and deleted the *.exe it downloaded.

Could this have something to do with it? Just a thought, don't know if it's the issue:

I have avoided Microsoft OS's since Windows Vista as it was the most horrible OS I have ever used. I've been currently running Linux Ubuntu among others across the board and never had any issues ! :yeah:
