Congrats to rdools. You've proved yourself to be the better racer. I'm sorry i haven't been able to provide a worthy challenge lately. I'm hoping that it will soon change. Take it from me, it gets lazy at the top! I shall return.

Hey Bam, don't be discouraged if your first couple times / the entire first week isn't anywhere close. Start with aiming for a 3rd place, and as you get more practise, you will start ramping up the points. Expect blisters, we have all been there. They heal over, and after a couple times the skin will be rough and it won't blister. But most importantly, have fun, and good luck! |

It's all about the drifts and finding that streamline. I find that if you can go straight after boosting you will hold you speed a bit longer, so try and plan when you let off boosts and when to start into the next one. |

If there are already existing times on the cart, erase them. Best way to get better is to race against yourself. Ghosts optional, but you just want to try to beat your last lap time. Seeing those numbers flash after posting a lap will get your juices going. =) If you've never played before, spend some time on Luigi's Raceway. It's perfect for playing around and getting a feel for the physics of the power slide. It's not hard to get the hang of. Once you do, just start in on the other tracks. Memorization plays a big role, so just keep playing. Once you're familiar with the gameplay and the tracks and you're ready to start smokin' some thumbsticks, MarioKart64.com has some pretty hard to beat strats for each track. Excited to see your times roll in Bam! |

I agree with kartmaster. I erased all the times on my NTSC-J cart because those flashing scores are the best thing to keeping you eager for more! I stuck to the first cup for a while to practice my drifting than moved up to other tracks. Takes a good amount of time to master each track. |

If you're not getting the feel for powersliding, try practicing it in the open space of Kalamari Desert. I've found that it gives you a good measure of how terrain can affect movement and speed. Practice. |

If you are looking for points, I might suggest some of the tracks that have a spread between 3rd and 1st. The first cup has proven very competitive, and dont expect any points at this point to come easy. Many of these times have hours put into them to get them where they are at. I'd say aiming for the top 5 in a couple is a nice start. As you practise you will find yourself doing much better all around! |

This is an old post, but is that why when I boot up my NTSC-J MK64, the kids seem like they say, "Mario Kart R!"? |

Haha yea, I noticed that myself and No64DD said that's the exact reason. I thought they were little Japanese kids struggling with English saying "Mario Karta!" but in fact they are saying Mario Kart R. |

That reminds me, do you know the reason Metal Gear Solid 2 Spoiler are called the "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo" in MGS 2? It just seems silly in the English versions of the game, but it's actually referenced as that because it is hard/near impossible for most Japanese people to pronounce L, and since MGS is an originally Japanese series, it's supposed to be impossible to pronounce, adding to the mystery of who they are.

You guys might find this hard to believe but today was the first time I ever seriously sat down and played MK64. I had Diddy kong racing as a child and when I finally got a copy of MK64 (ntsc-j aka "Mario Kart-R!" :P) a couple years ago, I wasn't very impressed. I didn't like racing against the CPU in championship mode (extreme rubber banding and cheap "party play" powerups make it not fun for me) but today I gave timetrial a bit of a shot, took some time to figure out turbo sliding and now I'm hooked! Hopefully I can eventually compete with some of these amazing times here. So far I've only played Luigi's raceway and best I've gotten is a 1'45"91. (Cutting across the grass on the final bend doesn't count as a shortcut does it?) *I can also see why this game is tough on joysticks, the constant stick wiggling for turbo sliding is pretty brutal! |

Glad to see you have joined the party! And cutting across the grass does not count as a shortcut. |

Sweet! Newcomers are definitely welcome. GP was always fun for me, but even still the vast majority of my time spent with this game was time trials, even back in the day. I flat out refuse to use an OEM controller with this game anymore. It's already destroyed four of mine over the years, haha. I anxiously follow your joystick development with this very game in mind. I wonder who will be first to submit a time, Sublime, Bamboozled, or Linus. =) |

Oh, definitely not me! I compared my times to the lowest positions of all tracks, and although I placed first in-game, I couldn't make 5th place even when I tried hard! I think I'm going to get some practice in today, and maybe a time.

What thumstick do you use for MK? I'm still thinking about making a variant of my joystick specifically for horizontal input heavy games. (by slightly modifying the case and making an alternate stick (with the T rotated 90degs) to allow me to swap the gear arms over). Still need to build a prototype but I think it should work. Then the heaviest strain and potential wear goes on the tougher arm (normally the vertical axis plastic gear arm) so that would be ideal for games like fps, diddykongracing (they wiggle the stick back and forth constantly when using the hovercraft) and of course mario kart. I'm sure there are more games that rely on left/right more than up/down so I'll probably give it a go and see if it's worth it. |

Personaly I use a Hori pad, its the only thing that has been able to stand up to the abuse. But maybe some fancy metal parts might might change my mind.

I think I already need a new joystick. The replacement one I picked up was tight for a very short period, now it's [quite] loose . . . .

I've been using a SuperPad64. It's ugly and uncomfortable. But it has pretty good accuracy, and they're expendable. |

I have no idea. I went to a local retro game store and they said they had a brand new stick for $7. It wasn't even in a box. I think I'm going to try the GC style stick next. Or see if I can find a decent one online. |

@ Sublime, I'd stay away from the GC style sticks, I don't like them and I find they miss a lot of the quick movements. Try some Kitsch-bent replacements. They are super cheap and 2nd in quality compared to Linus's god sticks. I own 4 sets of these and I have tried 2 types of GC sticks, and I would recommend the Kitsch-Bent. http://store.kitsch-bent.com/product/n64-joystick-gears P.S. If you got some extra money laying around I would buy a Hori Pad. I have beat the crap outa mine using it for most of my races on this thread and I still haven't worn the stick out. I'll give both of those a try. I've looked at the Kitsch-bent gears before and have been tempted. The Hori is on my list as well. Thanks for the recommendations. |
