Some of these times are brutal, I took a joystick from very good to good condition putting up some of my times but you guys must be grinding yours down HARD. I just bought a controller that is supposed to be like new (with the box!), I'm gonna try and find another for a reasonable price and lube all of them before I abuse any more.

Okay. Man, I tried to get in on the Moo Moo Farm fun, after 45 minutes and many many moles... I gave up (for tonight). Although I did set a personal best fast lap, so it was not all for naught! You guys are doing something special there!

I at least did improve a couple of my times.

if you break joystick, you're doing it wrong IMO. been using the same controllers for close to 2 decades now and they're still all good.

I'm doing it wrong too. I've toasted at least 6 thumbsticks since 1996. I try to be light to the touch... but it just gets so intense! I end up with a death grip on my controller.

I've just resorted to not using OEM controllers on Mario Kart 64 anymore. I can't be trusted.

same here!

I apologize if i appear to come on too abrupt, but the way things were going with number changing rubbed me the wrong way.
I feel others seeing this wouldn't find the initiative to keep playing...

@Meader, if you want a challenge- it's right here!!

Looks like I have some work to do. I'll top your scores again when everything gets updated.

Good Luck PM. My consistency is your downfall.

Man, I feel like I'm hitting a wall. Literally and figuratively. The shortcuts are kicking my butt. I can't seem to get my jumps down correctly for pretty much any of the big shortcuts. Spent a ton of time on Luigi & Mario Raceway. After an hour I only had one successful lap on each track.

I did improve a couple non-shortcut times, but I feel like I'm to the point I really need to focus on one track at a time. Just spend a few days working on one time and improving that, rather than jumping back and forth.

I'm still landing times on my old leaderboards, which makes me feel good. But also feel like that's where I'm plateauing. So as I nurse a mild case of "Nintendo thumb" with a cold Miller Lite, I'm off to go read some strats and see if I can get some better techniques.

I must reiterate how much freakin' fun this is. You are all pushing me to get better, but most importantly, pushing me to play more. I just laid down a time fast enough to take top spot on Bowser's Castle, and before I could post it, Meader has already beat it! So I'll be back to the grind to figure out how back in the 90's I somehow shaved almost three seconds off the time I recorded today. Hopefully the skill is still buried deep in there somewhere.

Thank you all for the time you're devoting to this old game. I hope you're having as much fun as I am!

I smell a leaderboard change! I never played mariokart 64. It was always diddykong racing or Mario kart double dash. But I agree with the kartmaster, this is extremely fun! I'll post more times tonight.

I Agree as well Kartmaster, this is super fun to compete. Meader and I used to do this all the time in college but we played Diddy Kong Racing.

@Meader, you may be consistent but I make big changes at random. I am as smooth as a walrus. :smokin:

Never owned it. Only played the mini-games with my cousins once in a rare while. But racing is racing, and mariokart is mariokart. I'm fairly good at Double Dash.

I call semi BS. I will agree that Meader never had this game growing up but you have played it with me and Cal, a bunch. Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, and Mario Party were our weekly staples. It wasn't until a year ago that you bought your first copy. I will say, Meader has this ability to pick up a game fast and become great at it. Hence the birth of our great rivalry. From SSX, to Super Smash, DKR, and many more...

I'd check that, because we did not play Kart as part of that. We'd play a lot of super smashed brothers and Mario Party Drinking Game, but the only kart we ever played was DD because I didn't like this one. I call BS on your BS. :dk:

Fair, my phrasing was very poor. By "I never played it" I more meant it wasn't something that was played with any real frequency. Like, I never owned it, never cared to, didn't go out of my way to play it, and actually went out of my way NOT to play it. But I concur with your :cussfit: call.

I feel like I'm getting closer to breaking through on Luigi Raceway SC. Three successful laps tonight. Unfortunately, none of them in the same run! But by golly I set a new personal fast lap, so I was determined to finish the race to record a SC time. I worked too darn hard not too! So even though it's slower than my NON-shortcut time.... Oh well. That will change in the future. =) Until then have at it.

Also had a pretty good run after some short work on Banshee Boardwalk. Still room for improvement though.

While view another topic about sharing Animal Forest files to visit each others towns, I had this grand idea about using DexDrives to save our ghost laps so we could post them online so other people can load the ghost files and race against them. I Think this would be a great way for everyone to better themselves because it will allow us to see how others race, and thus learn from one another. For example, one person could have mastered the intro bit of Moo Moo Farms, but another might have a faster approach somewhere else. Combining all our MK 64 techniques together is a great way for us all to boost our skill.

I already set up a drop box folder so we can host our save ghosts files. I am still working out the file structure but if you are interested in joining this idea then send me a PM and I will add you to the Dropbox folder.

I also just bought a DexDrive, convenient yes, but for those that don't have such device I purchased mine for about $40 USD. I bought mine with a serial port to USB adapter, which was about $9 USD, so if you don't need a serial port adapter its only about $30 USD. Here is the link to the item I bought: DexDrive 64

p.s. I will reclaim the Moo Moo Mr.Meader...

I dig the idea! I need to get the DexDrive hooked back up. That's one thing that hasn't gotten done since the move.

Also if anyone does buy a DexDrive and find the floppy drives corrupted (like I did), or just doesn't have a floppy drive at all... let me know as I have the install files in ZIP format I can share.

PM, I love the fact that you have a pile of CPUs, cigars and a box of paperclips sitting in front of your TV. Haha. So random, I love it.

And curse you for stealing my RRSC 1st place! =)

Haha I was wondering when someone would notice the stuff around my media stand. I also have an xbox controller, a scorpion sealed in glass and some pottery made by me. Yup 3 CPU's, 3 Cigars. and a box of paperclips! Good eye my friend!

The CPU's are from old computers, I always gut PC's and save the good parts. The Cigars are from a friend who I produce videos for, they come as a bonus with the paycheck. the paperclips are form clipping my paperwork together for North Woods Law, a show on Animal Planet.
