I was never a Metroid fan, not because I disliked the games but because as a kid I never had the chance to play Metroid nor Super Metroid. I heard very good things about GC/Wii metroid games so when the trilogy came out on the wiiU I bought it.

I'm like 20% far but I wanted to ask for some opinions. There might be spoilers"

I beat the game and there's a more complete review in my next post.

it's one of those games you need to invest lots of hours in, preferrably in daily doses to keep track of the environments.

playing this game every couple of weeks is a gargantuan experience

i finished it eventually, back when i still had seas of disposable hours to burn. i couldnt finish it ever again with having a job and family. unless i would play at night, but i need my sleep lol.

also, its one of those games i wont revisit, simply because nothing drags me back in. once you finish the game you can try to search for missile containers but personally i find this tiresome. i'm more of an "i want action, and i want it now" kind of person. walking for hours in endless corridors in vain, doesnt satisfy my needs. a game like rogue squadron does, however 8)

Ok, so I beat the game. Here are my impressions (Spoiler Alert)

Basically, my first impressions on the game, match my current ones after beating it. This game was released long ago and I'm trying to imagine how it fit among the others of its time, so that I'm not unfair with it.
All in all, it's a good game, a very good game. It just didn't meet my high expectations for a franchise so top rated and a game with many 10/10 and "masterpiece" reviews.

Even though I mainly feel disappointed it would be unfair not to mention the Pros:
- Awesome graphics and beautiful game. All the areas look great and the color palette is diverse.
- Amazing controls. And if they were (people say) almost perfect in the GC with the Wiimote it only got better (because of the aiming system).
- Very good music and sound effects show high quality composition, fits the game perfectly and sets the mood.

For me, these are 3 of the 4 the basics to any EXCELLENT game so the gauge is already 8/10 filled. It's just...that extra mile.

The Cons:

- The reason it doesn't get the 9: the story. Let's be honest, there's no story here. Pirates....Metroids...artifacts...kill everything that moves... what?? Also there are no characters. There's Ridley and it's a meta version so, ZERO characters. (It's a Metroid thing I know...)

- The reason it wouldn't get 9.5: the game needs teleports so much. This is one of the major flaws as it makes the game tedious many times. Being tedious is already a very bad sign for any game but the feeling that the game is tricking you into believing it is longer/bigger than it is only aggravates. Here's how I'd do it: Ridley has a brother, Ridlaw. A good being that does not approve his brother's actions. At specific locations Ridlaw would come and fly you to a different area. Because Ridley would kill him if he found out, he can't fight along you and would stay hidden most of the time. When you are about to defeat Ridley his brother would show up again to help you defeat him. See? Awesome story.

The reasons it wouldn't get a 10 are the following:

- Artifacts fetching. So people complained about Wind Waker shards? This is worse. Seriously.
- Enemies are not uninspired, I'll give them that but they repeat too much. And most of the time they are more annoying than tough, making the combat not satisfying.
- The scanning system is slow and overall tedious.
- Enemy spawn system is annoying and unnecessary. Also some bosses become stage minions...why?
- One mid-game boss is 10 times harder than Ridley and Metroid Prime.
- The terrain/world is actually much smaller than it seems in the map. The rooms are all small and the exploration factor is very limited by that.
- There's a few controls mini flaws... The enemy-lock system needs a tweak; there are some frustrating jumps; the grappling system doesn't work well; switching between beams and visors should be faster (there are unused buttons in the controller). I hope I'm not nitpicking but when you're tired of going back and want to rush through some levels it becomes important.
- Exaggerated backtracking. Way to much for me.
- Lack of different power ups. I don't mean the necessary ones to progress like suits and beams but finding Missile extension and energy tanks gets old fast. What about things like Running Speed Upgrades, shooting speed upgrade, Morph Ball speed, visors range upgrade, etc etc
- Oh I almost forgot, why did you teach how to use the abilities and then took them all away from me? That's cheap game design!

I'm pretty sure the vast majority of those who played it won't understand where did I find so many things to complain about this game. It's a masterpiece, it's epic, a classic. One of the best. It's all true but maybe it's just not for me. And I can see that it had to follow the Metroid formula which would explain some of my complaints.
But my review is 100% honest. A new Metroid is being developed for the WiiU and I just got much less excited about it.
Also, I have now Metroid 2 and 3 to play and I don't feel like it :(.

Please, let me hear what you guys think!

your review made me re-evaluate my own feelings about the game.

i really dont like it as much as i always thought i did. for me the main issue is the lack of replayability. there is nothing there that would drag me back in. and the one thing that should have provided this, ie great shooting action, is also lacking.

Sorry about that, I didn’t mean to make feel that way :(

Also I took my opinions to some Metroid fans and… as expected they didn’t take it very well. I think mostly because big fans have a very hard time understanding that my claims are about the game not reaching PERFECTION and not about it being a BAD game.

It’s silly because it’s like if someone would come here tell us the N64 is amazing but it doesn’t get 10 stars because of joystick issues and lack of RPGs and whatnot, and we just denied everything. It’s ok for GOOD things to have flaws. It’s all about improving and copping with them not complete denial.

In the meantime I also found some people who share some of my opinions so I guess I’m not over criticizing.

Anyway, I think the WiiU is the perfect platform for a great Metroid game so I can only hope they will nail it!

I'm going to go back and finish Metroid Prime 2 Echoes, I don't think I ever finished it. I recently re-bought the GameCube version, having sold both that and Metroid Prime when I bought the trilogy for Wii. I didn't like the Wii controls and when I seen that the trilogy was selling for silly money... I sold it.

Now I have the GameCube versions again. :D I'm looking forward to playing them. :)

Hey you!
Long time no see!

So many thoughts on these games, but I lack the time to put a lot in now...

I loved the original when it came out, have 're played it a few times since and loved it every time.
It certainly isn't for everyone, but I guess you should know as soon as you start playing whether you will like it or not.
I think some of the problem is kids attention spans these days and also just adult life, as said before this is a game you want to play close together, not once every now and then.

I have finished the 2 sequels and they are great too, but not as good as the original.
I also have the Wii version and find the controls to be pretty dam excellent.

I really enjoyed Metroid Prime when it came out, I remember being completely lost a few times but really liked the atmosphere, the world you get to explore and getting all the upgrades for Samus so that towards the end of the game she feels like a real bad as... :D

I got Metroid Prime Echoes not long before I got the original Xbox. I stopped playing it as I got into GTA3 and GTA Vice City for the first time. I never did go back to finish it but I do remember having fun (but not quite as much fun as the first).

I didn't get far with MP3 as I never spent enough time to really get used to the controls. For most shooters I prefer a pad to the wiimote so the GameCube versions of the first two are better for me. :)

I was a huge fan or the GameCube controller (still am) but I found after an hour or so or getting used to the Wii Mote controls I couldn't get enough.

Metroid Prime Trilogy is fantastic...
But I still haven't even started Prime 2: Echoes...
Too many games too play😆😖

My favorite game of all time. I could write a whole essay on why it's so amazing. :P
