Hi everybody,

I've had this project idea that I've really wanted to work on for a while now involving N64 games, and I was wondering what do you consider the definitive games of the N64 era?

Right now I have all the Mario titles, the Zelda titles, Smash, Kirby 64, the Rare titles, the Pokemon games, and Star Fox 64, but I know I'm missing games that others would consider classics and I'm wondering what would you consider those games to be.

Thanks a lot everybody! :D

Drop Kirby, definitely not "all" Mario games (Not that they are bad) not the Pokemon games. Not Smash.

Yeah I am different.

And too fussy just to throw a blanket and say ALL Rare games (as much as I'm a HUGE Rare fanboy.

You want a list?
But I'm tired and busy and OK!
It's for a good cause.

The big 3:
Super Mario 64
Goldeneye
Ocarina of Time

The multi-player legends:
Mario Kart 64
Bomberman 64
Snowboard Kids
Mario Tennis

Single Player Gold:
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Banjo-Kazoooe
Jet Force Gemini
Wave Race
Blast Corps
Diddy Kong Racing.

I'm tired and can't be arsed writing anymore.
Have fun! 😊

I agree Wave Race 64 needs to be in there. So many great games on the system it is so hard to narrow it down being as biased as I am.

I think Resident Evil 2 has to be mentioned because of the sheer size of that game. What was two disks on the PS1 fitting on a cart without much being compromised is incredible and shows the real potential the console had. It is just a shame so many game makers steered clear of the N64 due to the cost of cartridges.

Taking this list as a start I would add Majora's Mask due to its dark vibe (unique for a zelda game imo) and perhaps Mario Party (honestly don't if I should pick 1, 2 or 3).

I second Kamikaze, i'm one of those that believe Majora's mask was better and had more angles and more gameplay value than OoT

All of the above.

The problem is the N64 has a stupidly high amount of must play games.
An insane amount.

That's why N64 is Forever.

Yeah you're better off asking for a list of what NOT to include e.g. Superman.

But so as not to hi-jack the thread, and keep us on topic, how about including Indiana Jones. It's awesome!

The question is what constitutes "definitive". Was it done better on another console? Arguably, Smash 64, Mario Golf and Mario Tennis had superior sequels on the GameCube. (Obviously up for debate - I prefer smash 64 to Melee).

I would at least include Smash 64 as definitive because it started off an incredibly popular series.

Mario Golf and Mario Tennis are debatable, but Mario Tennis is where the definitive Mario sports roster really began, including Daisy, Birdo and Waluigi.

The Pokťmon games are a bit more tricky. Definitely not all of them...

Puzzle League wasn't released in all regions (no Japan) and most people know it better as Tetris Attack on the SNES

I would include Snap and Stadium 1 (NA/Europe's Stadium 1, not Japan's incomplete original) because they did something no one else had done before. Stadium 2 could technically replace Stadium 1 but it was in essence an expansion pack and not nearly as popular as the first.

Sadly I'm with you on Kirby. I loved the game but yoshi's story did the cutesy platformer better and MP/Stadium had better minigames.

Speaking of MP, would only one of the Mario Party series be the "definitive" one? And if so which?

Maybe even Mario Tennis might be up for debate. I adore both games

I think it's hard to say what games are "definitive" for the console. Most people would say the Banjo games, but Glover and Rocket: Robot on Wheels are underrated in my eyes. Space Station: Silicon Valley is a blast too. The N64 has a lot of hidden gems that don't come to most people's minds. That's a testament of strength for the console's library.
