I am trying to understand fmv video quality on the top 5 systems during the fifth generation. In theory the 64 should not be able to run high quality fmv's but Pokemon puzzle league looks great where as the 3do should in theory have the highest quality fmv's of the 5 but I have yet to see a game with as good of fmv as FFVII on the ps1.

Both the n64 and the ps4 have 64 bit processors. Now I'm not saying the 64 could run crysis at 60 fps but I'm not saying it couldn't.

I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at but my favorite full motion video tends to be the intros to some original PlayStation games. Here are examples.

Armored Core 1

Soul Blade

Colony Wars

FF7 fmv fits the game perfectly and would not be the same without it!

I want to say that when it came to titles that were on both PS and N64, and the main difference came down to the PS version having fmv, was never a selling point for me.
I could care less then, and i care less now. It's a moot point, and i'm tired of hearing it in game reviews especially.
I'll take the N64 version any day. Anything is better than having load times.

But overall, does a game benefit from having fmv??

I mean more on the technical side. How is the 64 able to do a Pokemon puzzle league quality fmv where the 3do who has a whole MB of video ram has fmv videos of lower quality.

The N64 with the Expansion Pak has 8MB of unified memory that can be accessed by the video hardware. The 3do only has 1MB of video ram. The 3do's 32bit CPU runs at 12Mhz while the N64's 64bit cpu runs at 93Mhz. Clearly the N64 has the better hardware.
The reason the N64 normally does not use FMV is because the space inside the game cartridges is very limited and super expensive. Resident Evil 2 is one of only a handful games that are bigger than 32MB.

Interesting, I'm surprised that the 3do having dedicated ram to just video didn't make a bigger impact. Thanks for the answer

If you remove the size constrains of the cartridge like by using a flash cart you can have really high quality videos on the N64 as demonstrated by marshallh here:

I bet Nintendo sold their cartridges to the game publishers at a huge markup making cartridge space even more expensive or else we might have seen more FMV on the N64.

Just like Sanni said, I think technically the N64 could have some great FMV quality, but the cartridge's storage forces the use of such a strong compression that in the end, it's the last in it's generation.

Saturn had some great ones, but i think PS1 is the winner in the end.

The 3DO had a slower CD drive as well, so it took longer to get the video off the disc.
