I'm confident that Nintendo thinks it's losing money on the Mini Consoles or else they would not make them in such a limited run.
The Club Nintendo Snes controller never sold below $30 a piece and they sold the SNES games for $8 on the Wii U Virtual Console. The SNES Mini has 21 games and two controllers, so that's a value of $230 without the console itself. Yet Nintendo sells the Mini for $80.

So there needs to be more to it than meets the eye here.
In my opinion the Mini consoles serve both as a marketing stunt and a test drive. They use the same family of CPU(ARMv7) as the Switch(ARMv8) so porting the emulators proven to be working on the Mini consoles to the Switch will be easy. Also with all the hype around them it is guaranteed that this will boost Virtual Console sales once it becomes available on the Switch. If everyone could get a Mini console no-one would need to buy Virtual Console games.

I don't think the Minis have much to do with the Switch, or with VC for that mattter.

The limited run is a classic marketing trick. Because of this, I'm sure more Minis are sold in it's limited run than it would have in - say 3 years - a normal run.
They're also not losing any money, because there are only a handful of people who actually buy all of the included games on VC. Also, these SoC's are cheap to manufacture, so they're making money in any case (maybe not as much money as all of the included games combined on VC, but as i said earlier, there aren't many people who would buy all those games anyway). Also, this is gold for people who like collecting Nintendo stuff. It sells anyway.

Also, the ARM CPU is unrelated, as it's pretty much the standard for handhelds and small devices nowadays (3DS and PSVita carry them too, and naturally the Switch, which tries so hard to be portable).


As for the controller subject of this thread, I actually like the design. If the build quality is decent and the buttons/analog are comparable to say the Hori Pad Mini (aside from the rubbish start-button), I'm sold.
I'll wait for the reviews first though. :rollseyes:

Would love to know how the sensitivity of the stick is e.g. if it's more or less like the hori pad or less sensitive. Hoping for the latter.

The thing that gets me is everyone out there is forgetting about the Hori Pad... Hori did what these guys did years ago and its much better. I would love to see someone compare those two controllers. I know some people say that the Hori is more sensative and it is, just slightly so I gotta throw out our boy Linus and say for a true N64 experience get the steel sticks
For casual play, I love my Hori Pad, but ESS with OoT is next to impossible because of the sensitivity so I stick to my regular gamepad mostly.
Apparently (as seen in MetalJesus' video) there is somewhat of a dead zone so it could be possible with this new controller.

I'm not sure about that Hori Pad comparison. Of course, it's great but that small design, bad d-pad, wonky start button and cramped shoulder buttons could be a dealbreaker. And let's not forget about the price they go for these days.

Also, as for comparing, let's not forget about the Raphnet adapter, which imo is an even better (and cheaper) choice for people who prefer a more traditional controller.

How is the Horipad with speedrunning?
Depends on the game.
It's somewhat holy for SM64 running, especially for Bowser (some runners even switch to Hori Pad mid-run, just for the Bowser battles).

It's useless for running OoT though, because of the sticks high sensitivity, rendering a practically non-existing ESS range aside from other difficulties.

Any new word on these things? Has anyone tested the joysticks to compare deadzones? If I have a GC style replacement joystick, will these controllers perform better for games like Smash and racing games? Curious if I wanna drop the cash, but wanna know it's worth it first.

Edit: Watch MetalJesusRocks' video on it where he tests this, it seems to be about the same as far as dead zones and overreach as the GC style replacements. Still not totally sold on this thing as a superior replacement to an OEM.
From all the impressions inside and outside of this thread, I'd say it's suitable for casual gaming but when it comes to competitive gaming it's better to stick to the original, or move to a Hori Pad Mini or GameCube controller if you're really looking for a replacement, the latter being the cheaper and more accessible choice.

Also I'd avoid the GC-style replacementsticks entirely for either style of gaming, unless you mod it.
