Wii Shop Channel (WiiWare, VC) to close Jan 31 2019 (partial shutdown sooner)

I was hoping they'd leave the download servers up, the same way you can redownload content on PSP's despite the disabling of the actual on-device shop, but it doesn't seem like that's going to be the case.

 I can't say I'm surprised, but still disappointed. N64 games with Gamecube controllers were close to gaming perfection for me - Grizzmeister and I have had many a good discussion about them :)

And also I loved 8-player Bomberman and Pokemon Rumble.

I really need to figure out the lifespan of the Wii hardware (beyond the disc drive) to see if it's worth investing in any more games or if it's gonna break down soon and I'll be sunk. At the same time I'm glad I'm reacquiring some of the original cartridges I had since they definitely seem to be more reliable.
It must be exciting to never have played a Zelda game before - No64DD

 There were some amazing games available through the Wii Shop Channel. Komani's ReBirth Castlevania and Contra games were excellent, Excitebike: World Rally was terrific, and all those arcade and "other" platform games. I nearly lost my mind when I saw Neo-Geo's Baseball Stars II on there. But it would be hard to say it wasn't time. I think we will see a lot of the worthwhile content make its way onto the eShop, so no panic here.

May still purchase the original arcade Tecmo Bowl, which my brother and I played years before the very different NES version launched.

 It's a testament to the huge user base of the Wii that Nintendo is keeping the service up until 2019. I've already purchased all the games I wanted from the Wii Shop Channel so I've got no complaints. It's been a very worthwhile service. :yeah:

 Do you guys think the video apps like Hulu and amazon will stop working at this time too? I know they won’t be available to redownload but that’s been one of my new favorite things about the system.

 So sad. Time marches on I suppose. There's a list on Reddit of VC games that are ONLY available on Wii. HERE

I gotta get ChronoTrigger before it's too late.

 Thank you Wii Shop Channel for putting incredible NeoGeo games like Metal Slug 3, Ninja Master's and The Last Blade 2 within my price range. :D

Just a PSA... you will only be able to add Wii Points to your Wii Shop until March 26th, 2018. (That is this coming MONDAY!)

You'll be able to use any points you have to purchase Wii shop content until the shop goes fully offline in January 2019.
