Should I buy a Wii U? Recommend me some games if so

Wii U's seem to be going cheap at the moment and this has the potential to really go up in price due to the low sales so I thought I'd pick one up now. I've extensively played N64 and GameCube but never any Wii or Wii U titles so I have a massive library to choose from.

Should I buy a Wii U or a Switch?

What games should I play?

Thank you!

A lot of the better games on Wii U are also available on Switch, so there is that point to consider - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, BotW, Pokken, and as much as I don’t like the games personally, Bayonetta.

That leaves a couple of really good exclusives: the main one for me would be smash for Wii U, but you’d also have to factor in finding a GameCube adapter or buying a bunch of pro controllers. There’s also the fact that it’s also on 3ds with a few minor but important differences. New Super Mario Bros U and Super Mario 3D World are good games but neither are particularly memorable to me - Odyssey probably eclipses them both. Lastly there’s Mario Maker, which is a really cool idea but I don’t know how much longer the servers will be up to download other peoples’ levels.

It was a good system but even I know it was kind of a letdown for Nintendo and after seeing the switch already outsell it, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo tried to take it offline prematurely :(
It must be exciting to never have played a Zelda game before - No64DD

I'm thinking Wii U as games will be cheaper than Switch and there's a larger library. I'm not into online multiplayer and will mostly be buying to play single player Zelda Breath of the Wind, Zelda Twilight Princess, Lego City Undercover, and Zombiu. I'd like to know of any other great single player games on the console?

That being said, a lot of WiiU ports on the Switch are more expensive on the Switch (although some contain all DLC).

As for consoles: if you enjoy portability, get a Switch. If not, get a WiiU. The Gamecube adapters have been coming down in price and getting 4 gamecube controllers is cheaper than getting one set of Joycons. And they are much more usable.

For me, Mario Kart is a must own. Other than that for an simple not-so-challenging playthru, get Captain Toad (and/or Yoshi Woolly World, althoigh I think Toad is better).

Everyone will be selling their Wii U to get a Switch, console and game prices will be low now and then slowly rise again as the supply dries out. If you're a collector now is the time. Best case scenario: Buy sealed games from clearance sales and keep them that way for 20 years.

However if you're a gamer just skip the Wii U and buy a Switch. Nintendo has been on a streak lately and I believe Super Mario Odyssey is just the beginning of an amazing Nintendo Switch game library. All that young talent that Nintendo has groomed over the years finally takes the reigns. It's the first console since the N64 that gives me the chills, it's that good.

That being said, the Switch is ridiculously expensive, the console, the games, additional controllers, just everything is like 25% overpriced. But that's what sales are for, I bought all my Switch stuff on sale and you can save between 20% and 30% that way if you're patience and don't mind waiting some months after a new game release.

Now if you're looking for the best bang for the buck, well that will be a hard choice if you factor in that the Wii U won't get anything new and you'll probably end up buying a Switch anyway some day. Thanks to Nintendo's notorious price stability the Switch will cost basically the same for the next 2 years. So if you'll be buying the Switch anyway why not buy it now?

But if you completely ignore the future and just evaluate the current state then yes buying a Wii U will be a lot cheaper and you'll have more games to play.

Thank you for this excellent advice, I've just bought a Switch  My first console since the Gamecube!

Got it for just £251 in a one day sale and picked it up from my local store just now. I'm going to trade in a load of stuff tonight to get Breath of the Wind, that should keep me busy for a while but what other games do you recommend?

Both Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey are a must buy. There is no way around those two. It feels like playing Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64 for the first time again.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also a must buy if you have any love for the Mario Kart series. It feels very polished and is just good multiplayer fun.

From there on it really depends on your personal taste. Even though the Switch is still so young it has amazing titles in almost every category.

For example if you like japanese RPGs and Anime you can't go wrong with Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the characters are lovable, the combat challenging enough to be entertaining and the learning curve is aimed at beginners too, so after 25 hours of play time you're still in the "tutorial" and new options are unlocked providing deeper game-play. It really eases you in very gracefully. Ofc there are loads of cutscenes but it's a JRPG afterall.

If you like turn-based strategy there is Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle which is getting stellar reviews too. But be aware that if you are already annoyed to death by the Rabbids characters and their silly humor from previous games then it will be hard to endure, which is the reason I have not played it that much so far.

Those are all the games I have to far, I kinda wish I had bought a different game instead of Rabbids but the other four games I absolutely love.

I would really like to try-out Splatoon 2 but I'm not into online gaming so maybe if I can get it really cheap one day. It seems like a very fun shooter and again is loved by everyone who played it.

If you're into classic jump & runs then Rayman Legends looks like a solid buy.

Then ofc there are a million great indie games but most of them are only available in the eShop and I only buy retail cartridges.
