Your experiences with people ...; ... who fit outside the social norm

OK, so I'm not sure I worded that correctly. I'm talking about whether, in your life, you've met or been friends with people who have challenged societal "rules" and acted, say, outside their gender-prescripted, expected behaviour.

Lots of people I've talked to have said they had problems with stuff like this at high school - one of the worst conversations that I, er, overheard was a girl talking to her friend about how she was the designated Dyke of her year at her all-girls' school. The scapegoat figure, because she didn't fit with the rest of the skanky hetero ho-bags general, generic population.

My school was fun! We had guys who schmoozed around in make-up (once you were a 7th-former and it was allowed, that is), girls who played rugby and were still madly popular (and just a bit plain mad, too, lol), and one guy who dressed up as a ballerina to do collecting - on the main street, and people loved him. Then again, broad daylight, middle of the day, the only people around were the old ladies and the mothers with wee kids.

So ... I realise other people would have had different experiences, and I'd like to discuss them. I'm interested in how things are treated differently in different environments: my high school was of the artsy drug-haven type, but now that I'm at uni, I'm noticing a tendency for the macho-type to dominate. I am hoping that setting up the Classics club and having guys swan around in Greek skirt-armour may change that a bit :D

Since I am a skanky hetero hobag, I fit in pretty well at my school.

I'm quite openly bisexual at my school, and while I don't genderbend (much) I still get guff. People around here think that bisexual= wants to shag everyone, so people shy away from physical contact with me. Homosexuality is treated like a joke around here. This morning, while I was working in the library, the guy next to me typed "Matt likes men" on another guy's Word document when the other guy got up for a few minutes. This afternoon, when I asked a girl why she was wearing bi pride colours on her knapsack (she said it was a coincidence- just a pinned-on piece of cloth dyed blue, purple, and pink) everyone in the vicinity laughed like it was the funniest thing they'd ever heard.

In conclusion: my school sucks.

Your school is nasty, and I will keep on saying this until you graduate and/or switch to somewhere nice.

Can't transfer; working on the GSA, no matter how slowly it goes. My mom's pushing for me to take another year, but I want to graduate ASAP.

I don't know anybody who fits with people's perceived "social norms", because there's something weird about everyone--be it some freaky kink, or the amount of times they dye their hair, or weird train-based hobby. :D

And Vio, you're in high school. Homosexuality will always be a joke in high school, so just look forward to graduation :P

I am one of those people who fit outside of the norms. You know, liking guys and all. People usually don't suspect it though. :3

Caliburnis! Did I know you were a member here? Can't remember ... brain asleep ...

Anyway, well done on the ninja keeping under people's gaydar. I have a friend who thought he did the same ... nah, no chance.

I've never tried to hide my sexual orientation. My philosophy is, why should I? I have as much right to be openly queer as my classmates have to be openly straight, and it bugs me when people say stuff like "Why do you have to flaunt it?" Excuse me, this isn't flaunting. This is me exercising the rights you get to take for granted, so kindly shut your trap.
