[[OOC: My titles suck so hard I should rent them to dairy farmers or something. XD]] Millicent adjusted her satchel and took a deep breath. She'd arrived at the Ainbrach Research Facility, where she was due to spend two days a week for the next three months, gaining experience in her future career. She was a little annoyed that she'd been assigned here, so far away from Rechvald; it meant she had to quit her part-time bar work and find some other way to fund her summer trip to Novel. On the other hand, this was where Exiona's best minds worked, so she was bound to learn quite a lot here. She made a vain attempt to smooth her crumpled blouse before walking up to the door of the imposing concrete building. A burly uniformed man stepped forward. 'And what's your business here, miss?' 'Erm, I'm Millicent Blackwell, from Rechvald University? I'm on a research placement here.' She fumbled in her pockets for her I.D. Her fingers found the thick piece of card, which she pulled out and showed to the security guard. Curly black script proved that she was indeed who she said she was. The man grunted. 'Sign in down the corridor on your right.' He held the door for her and she thanked him as she went in. As the door swung shut behind her she heard him mutter, 'Damn students.' She looked around her nervously as she walked down the corridor, her footsteps loud. The walls were bare and this made her apprehensive. The whole facility can't be this empty, can it? But then I am late... Coming up to a desk, a middle-aged woman eyed her with contempt. 'Are you the other student?' Seeing Millicent nod, she continued, 'You should have been here thirty-five minutes ago. I'll see who I can find. You have signed the confidentiality forms?' Another nod. 'Good.' The woman picked up a bronze speaking tube and tapped it. 'Hello? Oh, Jen, it's you. Could you see who's free and send them down here? Yes. Yes. She's late and she looks a mess. Sometimes I wonder if the people in charge are taking us for fools. Yes, just whoever. Thanks.' She turned back to Millicent. 'Someone will be down in a minute. Take a seat over there.' She gestured to a row of blue upholstered chairs which looked like they'd never been used. Millicent walked over and sat in one. It was rock-hard. She wriggled uncomfortably to try to settle in, gave up, leaned back and waited. |

"Hey, Varick, you're in charge of a student today," the woman, Jen, had told him simply. "You're one of our top researchers....amazing as it sounds," she muttered the last part, "...so you should be able to give this one a worthwhile tour. They're going to be studying here every so often. And...don't scare them away, will you?" Why in the world of Vaenice did she have to choose him? Okay, so he was the only guy within the general area at the time of her choosing that just happened to have years of experience and plenty of knowledge under his belt. But a tour? To some nerdy student? Oh, he could only imagine. Some complete brainiac teenage boy complete with poor, broken spectacles and greasy hair clutching onto his note-filled folders and books. Ugh...a pathetic nothing, at least as far as Nateilo's concern. The tall, lanky man in the oversized white lab coat made echoes with his footsteps as he made his way down one of the long, blank hallways of the facility. He mumbled to himself things of no great importance. Something along the lines of, "Why me? I could be in Rechvald now. Idiot facility..." And on and on it went. How was he supposed to actually give a tour or explain anything about a facility that he honestly could care less about? Okay, he loved tinkering with different studies and objects, especially weaponry and auria (he had become quite the Force Psion), but how he could actually make this dull, practically white-washed place interesting....even to some overzealous student who probably dreamed of this "nirvana of knowledge"...was beyond him. He'd probably fall asleep himself. He made his way down the flights of stairs in his Exonian graceful manner, moving his dark brown hair out of the view of his rather contrasting light blue eyes. Around the corner, through a door, and into something that Nat could predict would be an utter mess. Oh, what a waste of time! The rather self-absorbed scientist paid no mind to the student girl who waited in her seat, rather strutting his way proudly to the desk where the woman who had called sat. "Nateilo Varick? They sent you? Don't young scientific prodigies have anything better to do?" The woman scoffed, obviously making fun of Nat's rather unusual status, as well as just the man in general. Indeed, he was the youngest Top Researcher in all of Rechvald. And he was often envied for it, which Nat, being Nat, often soaked up like a sponge and transformed the envy into a compliment. "Well, here I am. Where's the privileged student?" He asked, leaning casually ontop of the desk, smiling foolishly at the woman. "She's over there," she said dully, rolling her eyes and pointing to the girl in the chair he had only just passed. 'She?' He slowly turned his head around, his blue eyes rounded in a long stare. Wait...he was going to give a tour to a pretty girl? Okay, he was young, but still. This changed things dramatically! Now he wouldn't mind giving a tour everyday of his life. He would make this place sound incredible! Well....he'd probably make himself sound incredible. If he could help it at least. Nateilo boldly made his way to the student, taking an incredibly awkward bow to her, probably due to his height and oversized coat...as well as the fact that the man completely failed at any attempt at chivalry. "So, Miss Student. My name is Nateilo Varick, Top Reseacher at the Ainbrach Research Facility. I must apologize for missing you earlier, I wasn't expecting somebody so lovely." Sheesh. Who dropped the cheese wheel and splattered it all over his speech? Everything that came out of his mouth, besides his introduction, sounded phony and forced. And the intro itself sounded so self-absorbed, that one would probably had been amazed that his inflated ego hadn't sailed off into the sky like a balloon. What this man would do to try and impress women....No wonder the woman was afraid he'd scare the girl away. |

'Erm... Hello, sir?' Millicent leaned back to put a little space between herself and Nateilo's smarmy grin, looking for all the world as if she was trying to melt into the furniture. She wasn't entirely sure how to react. He was a top researcher, after all, so she should try to make a good impression - but that little introduction threw her off. The man was clearly an idiot. She'd never heard a line like that come from the mouth of someone sober before. She put on an expression that was more grimace than smile. 'I'm Millicent Blackwell. I look forward to working with you.' That was at least half-true. While she wasn't relishing the thought of spending any more time in his company than was strictly necessary, she figured she could at least enjoy trying to get him to spill state secrets. That might be fun. She slid over to the next chair across and got to her feet. Self-consciously, she smoothed out the creases in her trousers before offering a blue-stained hand for him to shake. 'It's an honour to meet such an obviously talented man as yourself.' |

Nat straightened himself into a much more natural appearing upright position rather than the crooked bow he had attempted while the student introduced herself. While he surely acted like an idiot, the man was smarter than one would think, and, being somehow gifted with sharp observation skills (normally handy when designing weaponry, as even the slightest mishap meant problems), could tell the woman was less than appeased with him. Immediately, the inside of Nateilo sulked. 'Why do I never have luck with them? Even this young woman should be impressed...I mean, I'm older and I am of a high position here. Why does every attempt I make never work?' Silly Nat, such attempts were useless. No woman would ever want to bother with a man who acted like such a pompous jerk. If he actually acted normal, he'd probably be more likable instead of forcing every movement, every word. It was through this useless attempt at impressing that Nateilo painted the picture of himself as an egotistical, obnoxious moron. While, in fact, he was a rather kind, easy going man. Still rather idiotic, but definitely not nearly as snobby. "Well, Miss Blackwell, it is a pleasure to have such a young mind interested in the facility," He nodded, taking her hand and shaking, his grip perhaps too firm as if he were trying to show off his (lack of) strength. The man obviously had little to no muscle to him. He was a tall, lanky lab rat with a handsome face and a brilliant mind. While he had originally caused some fuss between the female workers here, when they actually met him, well...their expectations weren't quite met. Of course, when he had come here years ago, he was the youngest researcher to step foot in the facility, and the majority of the time he was fawned over in the maternal fashion. Romance was out of the question, and, to the hopeless romantic Nat's dismay, probably not in his future at this rate. "I appreciate the flattery," he grinned childishly, "but I do have a tour to come up wi-- I-I mean, give you you. Of course, I've done this a million times, not literally, of course...being a Top Researcher and all." He laughed nervously. If this Millicent was as smart as she clearly seemed, she'd probably have caught on to the pathetic attempt at an act. It was a good thing that Nat went into the field of science rather than theater. "So, tell me, miss, where would you like to begin? It's important to know of your main interests first." Translation of that was something along the lines of 'that way I can hurry you through and not bore you through the rest and know where to begin', as well as 'I have no clue what I'm doing'. Yet at least he was trying. "We have massive libraries, top secret facilities that someone such as myself just might allow you to take a peek in if you're good," he laughed, "And, of course, many other rooms that might peek your interest. I would suspect you have some sort of interest, otherwise you wouldn't be wasting your time in this rather unlively place." He waved a hand as if passing the thought by in the air. "Anywhere you like, Miss Millicent." Edited by Mishtishi, Sep 15 2009, 02:52 PM.

[OOC: Sorry for the wait, I lost internet for a few days. Should be fine now though. :D] Nateilo's handshake, while not the strongest, was far firmer than Millicent had expected and she shook harder herself to try to keep up. She had also been half-expecting it to go on for too long, and was a little surprised when it didn't. She leaned down to lift her overstuffed satchel off the floor and slung it with some difficulty across her body. As Nateilo gave his opening spiel, Millicent's thoughts ran something like this: Oh gods, who thought it was a good idea to let him talk to the public? Though he does have a nice smile... No! Bad Millie! Now is not the time to discover you have a libido! Wait... what did he say? Libraries? Top. Secret. Facilities? Oh. Ooooooooh. I thought he'd just show me the coat room and then have me making coffee all morning... This is... Aaaah... This is gonna be amazing, this is gonna be the best thing ever, this is... 'So awesome,' she mumbled, able only to keep her excitement quiet rather than to herself. A huge beaming grin spread across her face. 'I... I... I just don't know, sir... Can we start with everything? I want to see everything. Oh,' she added with a look of disappointment, 'but you wouldn't have time for all that. You must be very busy so maybe just show me the best bits? Or the most secret. Um.' She laughed quietly, bit her lip and looked down. In her mind's eye a slow clap started. Real smooth, Millie. Very professional. She noticed her bag was slipping and hoisted it further up her shoulder. She looked up again, her face noticeably reddened. She made to start walking and stuttered, 'Should we, er, should we, um... Lead the way!' |

((ooc: Oi. Bad luck. Glad you got it fixed!)) Nat grinned to himself. Top secret. Heh. That one, he had a feeling, would be the biggest crowd pleaser. Of course, he couldn't necessarily parade people not a part of the facility through such areas on a whim. Thus, he'd probably have to downgrade it to the basic areas. Sure, she might be a little disappointed, but he would attempt to keep her entertained. After all, if he made it more fun for himself, hopefully he wouldn't have to "scare" the student away. It was worth a shot anyway. He watched as the girl seemed immediately captivated by his suggestions. She wanted to see everything? Well, she was right when she mentioned that he didn't have time for that. Nat was very passionate about his work. He was very much less passionate about the facility itself. He despised the fact that it was so confined, so secretive. He wished deeply to share his innovations, as well as the work of the facility, to the world. Yet such a giant boom of in-progress technology could cause many problems. Many things they had worked on here had been in development for years on end. Everything needed to be perfected. She looked up at him then, her face noticeably red. Was she blushing? Nateilo grinned, almost triumphantly as if he were the reason for temporary change in cheek color. Yet before he could really soak it in, the student was already ready to head in whatever direction he was to lead her. Nateilo stood like a deer in the headlights for a moment, not necessarily knowing where exactly he was to lead her to, but eventually the little light bulb went off. "Ah, yes. As you probably know, the Ainbrach Research Facility centers a majority of its focus on Auria. Auria itself is still a mystery to most people, though many have learned to control it for centuries," he went on, nodding his head to and fro as he stepped, almost marched, down the hall to one of the doors. "Elementalists were the first, concentrating on a more physical aspect of Auria. Then came Psionics, which focused more on the unseen aspect of Auria. However, Auria has many forms. For example, the reasons that airships fly is partially because of Auria." He came to the door and opened it. It was rather empty inside, as most of the scientists had left the room be for some time. It was a rather simple room, not filled with anything extremely scientific. Instead, it was more like a miniature museum. Ancient artifacts from research notes about Auria, old Elementalists' staffs and other mediums, as well as miniatures of airships, and so on and on it went. A few were held in glass cases with descriptions sprawled out on paper in front of them. "This room is one of the most important in all of the facility, and basically a good starting point for our little 'tour'. After all, without any knowledge of what this facility is really about, nobody can really appreciate its importance." Thus ended the cheesy tour guide charade. Nateilo immediately relaxed and motioned his hand for her to go about her business "oohing" and "aahing" at whatever suited her fancy. Sure it wasn't the room she'd particularly want to see, but it gave him more time to think as to where in this boring place he was going to take this girl and keep her interest. He didn't mind the company of a pretty girl, and who knows? Maybe she'd be so impressed with his "tour" he might win her over....just a little bit. ((ooc: x.x'' Not really any idea as to where he'll take her next. Probably a room with weaponry. But that's really all I can think of at the moment.)) |

[OOC: Weapons are cool :D I was thinkin since Millie's basically Work Experience Girl she'd get stuck as Nat's lackey for her placement? If you wanna discuss we can take it to PM?] Nateilo didn't immediately start walking, so Millicent looked back and waited. When he did move a second later, she found herself having to adopt a bizarre half-jogging gait to keep up. He seemed quite keen to give her a good look around. Maybe this would be fun after all. And then he made the mistake of opening his mouth again. Probably know this? Of course I know this! This is the most basic of the basic stuff! But rather than letting him know what she was thinking, she made noncommital listening noises and nodded along with him. They stopped by a door that looked just like every other door in the facility. Millicent held her breath in anticipation as Nateilo turned the handle. Would it be full of fantastic machinery? Strange lights? Even a file cabinet full of secret reports would do. When the room turned out not to contain any of these things, she deflated a little. Oh well. Something in there would probably catch her interest. After taking a quick look around the room, she made a beeline straight for the case containing the old research notes. She ran her fingers over the glass lightly, following the lines. 'Wow. Parts of this are quoted in my textbook. Chapter four, page,' she hesitated for a moment, 'page one hundred and three. Oh man, this bit's really interesting and they left it out.' She finished reading in silence and moved on to the collection of staffs on the wall. She touched these too, feeling the slight bumps of the wood and the smooth chill of the metal, noting the patterns intertwined masterfully along the material. She couldn't tell which regions they were from, however. She made a mental note to read up on the subject when she returned to Rechvald. She moved between all the exhibits, examining them in detail, touching anything that didn't look too fragile, scanning the notes attached to each one. Most of the things in here she'd heard of before from her reading and was just happy to be able to see them for real, but there were some that were new to her. She was particularly amused by the model of the largest, fastest airship ever designed that had, said the plaque, unfortunately turned out to have major structural problems of the exploding kind and had been quietly scrapped before completion. For all her interest, it was no more than ten or fifteen minutes before she had exhausted the room's supply of oddities and returned to the door, where Nateilo still stood, looking thoughtful. From his behaviour so far, Millicent had her doubts about that 'top researcher' thing. She was starting to suspect that someone had put a lab coat on a janitor. After all, the top secret rooms would need cleaning too, so of course he'd have access... But for now she'd give him the benefit of the doubt. She stood expectantly with her hands behind her back, waiting for the man to decide where to go next. 'That was interesting, thank you.' |

Nat grinned childishly as he watched her move about the room. It seemed that, while this was certainly no top secret area of the facility, that it had peaked her interest slightly. He couldn't help but think of how he had acted when he found this room. He couldn't contain his enthusiasm then, looking over everything with wide eyes and a somewhat heavy heart in the remembrance of his grandfather, whom really inspired him to take forth in the field of science. This room, in fact, was the first stop he had ever made in the facility when he was appointed. After going through its contents he had been ever the more determined to make a difference in the world. Whether or not he had actually done that years after, Nateilo wasn't quite sure. After Millicent made her way throughout the room and got her fill, Nat had already come up with their next stop. Why shouldn't he take her through his area of expertise? Not only would that impress the young woman, but it would certainly allow him to show off in front of his colleagues....if he didn't do that enough already. Nateilo was already bubbling with childish excitement at the thought of some of the older, much more experienced men whom worked under him (as he was in fact the top researcher) gazing in shock and slight jealousy as he paraded a rather lovely young woman through, spieling his knowledge about every little piece in that area. "It is not a problem, miss," he soaked in the thanks. "But now for perhaps one of the most important parts of the facility -- mine." He pointed to himself, unable to hold back his overall goofy grin. It was enough to cause many an "oh, brother" or "what's up with this guy". He was already on his way out the door, shutting it behind them once they were both out of the room as he continued on. "As I have told you before, I'm a Top Researcher here. It's quite an honor, as I am the youngest. My specialty lies within weaponry and the altering of Auria in order to create more advanced, powerful weapons. Now don't get me wrong. I am more interested in the mechanics -- I am not a fan of war or fighting." Oh was he so true there. In fact, Nat was perhaps the biggest coward in the facility. His whole brave and macho charade was simply a mask he put on for the ladies or whomever else he was attempting to impress. This walk was much farther than the one before, but eventually after a few turns and twists they came into a more secluded area of the facility with two large double doors leading into it. The entrance itself was enough to tell that this area was much more important than the little miniature museum. It was filled to the brim with metal and blueprints scattered about. People were running to and fro, gathering information or parts. The room seemed to stretch for a long time before ending. There were sparks and fires where people were attempting to weld, and in the distance there were echoes of practice shots from revolvers in development. Nateilo looked at it all rather proudly, glancing over at Millicent to see her reaction to the scientific spectacle. "Hey, Varick, where have you been?" Asked one of the men who seemed to be passing by in a dash, his arms filled up to his chin in rolled up blueprints. "They're trying to get the new ammunition in order -- you know, the ones with the Auria injected into the bullets. You might want to check it ou -- Wait...who's she?" Nateilo soaked every moment in like a sponge as he made a dramatic introduction for the student. The man, who knew very well what Nateilo was like, only rolled his eyes at the top researcher. Sometimes he wondered how a man so idiotic could be such a genius. "This is Miss Millicent Blackwell -- a student. I am showing her the facility today. She may be coming to join us one day soon." The man only laughed. "Well, hopefully she won't be stuck with you, Varick sir. I wouldn't want to wish that on any young woman who has any sense." Nateilo only glared at him. "I thought you had work to do?" And then the man scuttled off, laughing to himself while Nat attempted to regain his composure. "You are welcome to look at anything you like, but try not to get into the workers' way. One thing gets interrupted, and there can be an explosion. Thus is why I am head of this entire part of the facility," he beamed proudly as he stared ahead at all that he considered his handiwork. "This is lucky for you, Miss Millicent. I can show you anything you want to know more about." Edited by Mishtishi, Sep 20 2009, 09:26 AM.

Oh, what, he's going to show me the broom closet? thought Millicent sarcastically; she'd rather run away with the Nateilo-as-janitor idea. She again adopted her ungainly pace from before as they made their way down the corridor. Hearing his elaboration, however, she made a mental apology. Sorry I doubted you, Mr Varick. It's impressive how you rose to such a position with your... obvious problems... She noted with pleasure that he worked on weapons. She was interested in weapons. But then again, she was interested in everything. The two walked on in silence. Still not quite knowing what to make of him, she looked up at him a couple of times and pushed a limp lock of mousy blonde hair behind her ear, where it did not stay for long before escaping. Eventually they reached the end of the corridor. Double doors. This did look important. When the doors opened and the pair stepped into the huge space, she was completely overwhelmed. So much was going on all over the place that she could scarcely take it in. Her efforts to absorb all the information in the room all at once backfired rather spectacularly and all she could do was stand with a vacant expression. She could barely remember to breathe. This is amazing. Oh, look at that, what's that, what's that over there, ohthatlooksinterestingwhatisitsomuchtotakeinabadaghkkkkkkkkk '... show you anything you want to know more about,' was all she heard of the conversation. With some effort, she closed her mouth and blinked for the first time in a whole minute. She raised a shaking arm and pointed at random at something across the room. 'Uh... That?' Hesitantly, she walked further into the room. Being so overawed and enthusiastic, she was a lot less aware of her surroundings than usual and was promptly almost flattened by a man with a wheelbarrow. She jumped back. 'Yai!' she yelped and followed up hastily, 'Sorry! I, I didn't see you...' 'Watch where yer going, girl!' The man leaned down and picked up the parts that had fallen from the abrupt stop. 'Ye'll cause an accident.' [OOC: Edited for dumbassery and again for boringness. -_-; I'm still a bit rusty at RP so if I screw up, let me know. :P] Edited by Quills, Oct 4 2009, 11:09 AM.

Nat looked around the facility, still booming with pride at the ability to show off his different developments to somebody new. It was very rare that he ever had such an opportunity. In fact, the main reason why he actually had a dislike for the facility was not simply for its overall boring atmosphere, but for the fact that he rarely had to chance to show off his innovations to the rest of the world. Of course, he didn't actually come up with everything in this busy room. Rather, he simply looked over the majority of the projects, actually having a stroke of genius to create a few himself here and there. However, he felt that being a part of the whole process gave him enough right to claim it as his own in some form or another. So of course the young scientist soaked in the young student's every reaction as if she were gawking at his own achievements rather than the ongoing studies in the room. He honestly could care less what she was looking at or even wanted. To him, this was his single moment to be proud, to boast. Well, he'd do that anyway, but for once, Nat was rather entertained by the items that filled his everyday life. A part of him felt the excitement Millicent felt as she looked about the room, his emotions having an overload instead of his brain. He was so distracted in this that he didn't notice her walk away, almost being flattened by a rather busy man with a rather heavy wheelbarrow. When the man exchanged words with her, Nateilo immediately intervened in his usual, dramatic fashion. "Now, sir, you should know better than to treat a lady that way," he scolded. "Let alone a guest. Back to work." He shooed the man away with a wave of his hand that caused the man with the wheelbarrow to roll his eyes and mutter under his breath, "Moron of a scientist he is..." Nateilo didn't hear a word of it, his attention now focusing on Millicent in hopes of actually being able to show her something before she became a pancake. He beckoned her with his fingers as he made his way, his long, scrawny legs stumbling about in his attempt of graceful movement, towards a rather strange looking object sitting on a table. It was far from finished nor was it anything fancy. Blueprints were surrounding it, sketched on with drawings and notes and scribbles and spilled ink. It was far from anything spectacular, at least compared to some of the other objects that filled the room. Yet Nateilo beamed over the apparent piece of junk with eyes filled with admiration. "This, Miss Millicent, is a project....well in progress," he admitted in a slightly embarrassed fashion. While he did admire it, he would agree that it definitely did not look the part of some great invention or discovery. "I hope it will be a great innovation one day. This molded metal, if somehow combined with controlled Auria, could possibly create a stronger, magically based armor. This would create better protection for troops who protect their countries. You see, with the Auria in the armor," he stroked a bony finger across the piece of rough metal and the directed the finger over a messy scribble of a sketch on one of the blueprints, "it would create a sort of extra barrier shield, sort of like the Psionic shield. It's rather complicated and still in major development." He paused for a moment and brought the finger to his forehead, his eyes closing as he thought. He said rather audibly, "So...where should we go next? Or would you rather spend your time....here?" He smiled to himself as he opened his eyes and then tilted his head in a questioning manner towards the young student girl with a smile. "I do not doubt that you are intelligent. You probably have places of interest and have researched the facility to some degree. What do you plan on studying?" |
