Chuck, none of the taillights were on. Not even the top lights on the rear. The only lights that functioned were the brake lights.

Joseph, 5409 without working tail or advance lights on the rear? That sounds like something that my Midvale operators would pull, not Victory oeprators.

I rode 5428 on the 30 alte yesterday evening(9177 block) & 5428 was freshly overhauled with ads, new ZFer sytle Flyer lights by the front & back doosr(similar to those on the 5700s). 5428 ran smooth & it was clean. 5428 doesn't make that hovering noise like it once did either.

5428 was never a hover..... It was however one of the fastest buses out of callowhill though...

Is 5428 still is fast?

On a related note, Callowhill has done a great job to get rid of the hover on there buses.

These are the following buses which were once hovers but not anymore thoughout the system.

5411
5414
5628
5434
5425
5453
5427*

The ones in BOLD are the long terms ones that were hovering since 2002.

Hmm, wait Joe...that's not a broken bus, I've seen this before...numerous times as a matter of fact.

I believe the driver is not operating in "night mode" which is supposed to have all the clearance lights and tail lights on in operation. That, again, is very unsafe as well, and annoys me myself. Thank goodness for the reflective SEPTA logo.

In terms of malfunction, I did see a New Flyer operating without its curb side headlights - THAT is unsafe, particularly where the bus is running through dark roads in suburbia trying to pick up passengers along the way.

Of course, that could have happened during in service, but I wonder if SEPTA's maintenance program is starting to become a little bit deffered (i wonder as i sit next to a window where the plastic pane is falling inward...ah Frontier).

thats right buses has a device which is called the master control switch. By touching it will put the bus in a different mode for its operation. This bus must be in it's day/run mode since all of the lights plus marker lights were off. The driver must have forgot to put the bus into the night time mode.

Here is what each single mode does

Code:

ENGINE STOP - All electrical systems off, except power available for the interior lighting, stop lights, turn lights, hazard lights, silent alarm, horn, and fare box.

NITE/PARK - All electrical systems off, except those listed in OFF and power to radio and marker lights.

DAY/RUN - All electrical systems and engine on, except the headlights, parking lights, and marker lights.

NITE/RUN - NITE/PARK - All electrical systems and engine on.  The door control, kneel control, windshield wiper/washer controls and run switch shall be in the most convenient driver locations.  They shall be identifiable by shape, touch, and markings.  Doors shall be operated by a single control, conveniently located and operable in a horizontal plane by the driver's left hand.  The setting of this control shall be easily determined by position and touch.  Turn signal controls shall be floor-mounted, foot-controlled, waterproof, heavy-duty, momentary contact switches.

Saw 4569 on the 23 on 11th Street just south of Market. (The block # was 3119.) As Tom McGinnis would say:"Are You Kidding Me?!?" (I guess it could have been worse...4569 could have been on the 47...can you picture that?) :o

5428 is a speed demon. I rode 5414 & 5453 on the 52 today. Speed demons as well. No hovering.

I think that the entire 5401-5410 & 5586-5595 group at Red Arrow(in addition to 5596-5600 & 5647-5655) are noted for their hovering as well.

Many times have I walked through the Elmwood Park area(76th & Elmwood Avenue) along the 108 & heard the loud hovering of a Red Arrow 5400 or 5500 traveling along 78th Street while I was walking along Elmwood Avenue from 76th to 77th Streets.

The hovering sound is a hallmark in the Overbrook Park area along the 105(I'm walking along Malvern Avenue between 75th & 76th Streets) while the bus is hovering away along 75th & 77th Streets.

If my memory serves me right the ex-southern group of flyers currently as victory. Are not hovers, however, the 54xx series at victory are indeed hovers esp 5407.

Anyone else here notice that those "hovers" are slightly slower in accelaration compared to there normal sounding counterparts?
