So, yeah, the other day, week, month I found this as I was hanging out at Lafeyette and Swede waiting for a bus to pull up for my next shot. It was quite interesting to find this, and nice to see that SEPTA did actually care about the history in its lines back in the day!

Ah, good old norristown. Was the Elevated structure a single beam structure or something like that, or was it the dual type that we currently see near NTC? |

The plaque is embedded in the sidewalk along Swede St. between NTC & Main St. There were at least 2 installed, but only 1 remains now. The original elevated structure was single beam (I believe) & basically continued up Swede St. (east side sidewalk, not in the street itself) & ended alongside the second story of the building (former P&W terminal) located at 2 E. Main St. (SE corner of Main & Swede) It was a single track, with a wooden platform long enough for 2 cars. To get to the old platform, you would enter the building on the corner & go up one LONG flight of steps. There was no elevator or escalator. Once you got to the top of the steps, the platform would be on your right. The doors leading to the platform were retained long after the platform was demolished in 1989-1990...they still may be there! (The stairway itself was sealed off.) Until the Liberty Bell Route (Lehigh Valley Transit) line to Allentown quit in the early 1950's, the elevated structure continued across Main St. & up about another block to the top of the hill (next to the Montgomery Co. Courthouse) where it switched into Swede St. & continued north from there, eventually leading to Allentown. Michael B. |

They recently did construction in that area - I believe thought that you might be abel to see remnants of the doorway, but it is certainly walled off. |
