Hmm, that would be a lengthy extension! Isnt the 89 quite long as it is, and do the ridership figures equate those that are on the J. The good news is that at least there would be a direct connection to the Broad Street Line for the 89 passengers, but I think it does well as a Circulator type route. However, why not run it from Frankford - no room/no Dorados? |

I think it could help ridership actually and provide stress at the same time off the 26. In order for ridership to be above borderline, I would say re-hab the old Logan stateion at Broqad and Lindley. I would do every 12 minutes headaway on rush hours and every 15 to 20 minutes off peak, every 20 to 30 minutes on saturdays and every 30 to 40 minutes on sunday, and it wouldn't help that it can serve some meaningful areas, and do some urban development along some of these lines, when the neighborhood goes back, people move and don't do anything about it and drops ridership on their once "moneymaker" routes. So urban redevelopment and serving meaningful areas. The 89 is nothing but a loop for the eastern part of North Philly starting from southbound York-Dauphin Station to Margaret-Orthodox Station. How can buses connect to the 25 and the 73 from Arrott Terminal? The 89 already does. |

An improvement would be to reduce the headways on the J on weekends from 60 minutes to 40 minutes(60 after 8pm). |

If the letter routes were to be given numbers, here's what I'd number them: C (Nedro): 71 C (Cheltenham-City Hall): 69 G: 74 H/XH: 85/86 J: 16 K: 4 L: 63 R: 41. In addition, the 71 would be extended to the Navy Yard via the current 71, the 69 would be operated only out of Midvale, The 74 would be split between Southern and Callowhill (again), the 85/86 would be extended to Temple Hospital, and the 16 would get better weekend service (30 minute headways, 45 after 8 PM). The 4, 63 and 41 would recieve no major change. |

One reason Septa changed certain route designations...ie...letters to numbers...was to simplify the entire route system in all of the septa divisions. City Transit Division and Red Arrow Division had the same route lettered lines when both divisions were merged into the Septa umbrella. Red Arrow's E bus ran from Darby to Springfield while City Division's E bus ran from 69th Street to Germantown. A caller trying to get route information for the E bus could get messed up if that caller didn't know what divison he was inquiring about. The RAD route F ran from 69th Street to Oakview while the CD's F ran from Manyunk to parts unknown I believe. One huge system with no mirrored route designations to make life a little easier for all involved. I also was a regular rider on the city's PTC E and D buses while growing up in the 1950's. I personnaly miss the letters on the city routes that I used to ride. RayPA. |

You're not lying. I grew up along the old SEPTA Route 6 streetcar line along Ogontz Avenue in West Oak Lane & the former route S line that ran up to Cheltenham & Willow Grove Avenues(Stenton & Upsal). I miss those scenes that you could find any typical weekday @ Broad & Olney Avenues in 1984: A brand new 1983 Neoplan BD transit(8500s, like 8504) assigned to the S route, a GM FIshbowl on the C rotue & lastly, a PCC like 2159 along the 6 route. More that 75 percent of the people I live around know very little about the old SEPTA system involving lettered routes. All they know is the Broad Street Line. Children in the neighborhood where I live at don't even know that the 6 used to be a streetcar line. And you got a double bonus. Flxibles on the D & E, Gulf Oil all electrics on the 10 & 15 & lastly, the Almond Joys. Back in the 1970s, what type of buses did Callowhill deploy onto the route 30? I was thinking the seldom seen Flxibles in the 1200 series. The 30 was a feeder linking Haddington to 40th Street. |

Callowhill had about 8 of the 1200 series Flxibles [45096-6-1]. The buses were used on: 1]The ORIGINAL 14 bus [40th and Market to 42nd and Chester] 1 bus during the peak hour only. 2]The D-1 [Civic Center-30th St Station shuttle] 2 buses during peak hours and 1 bus during middays Monday-Friday Only. [Much of this route is part of the LUCY line.] 3]The F bus [52-Lancaster to Main and Green Lane in Manayunk via Belmont Ave] 1 bus making 3 round trips every AM and PM peak hours. 4]Route 85 [49-Parkside to 33-Dauphin] This route approximated the defunct Fairmount Park Trolley except it used Ford Rd through the new [for the 50's] development in the West Park area. The route originally crossed the Strawberry Mansion Bridge over the Schuylkill River until 1980 when it got an entirely new route because the bridge was structurally deficient enough to ban any vehicles heavier than cars. The route used City Ave and Ridge Ave between Belmont Ave and 33rd and Dauphin. This route used 2 buses during peak and 1 bus all other times. After the '80 reroute, it used 2 RTS's on weekdays[45 min headway], and 1 on weekends [90 minute headway]. In the 90's the route east of Belmont Ave to 33rd and Dauphin was abandoned, and the West Park portion was incorporated into the present 40 route. 5]Last, but not least, the 30 bus [40-Market to 65-Vine]. 2 buses during Peak, 1 bus off peak, evenings, weekends. If there weren't enough 1200's available, then a 40 footer was assigned to the line. The F bus was abandoned around 1976. In 1980, the 14 and D-1 was folded into the present 30 bus, and in the 90's the 30 was extended to the 69th St Terminal. At the time the 40 foot RTS's were assigned to this route. Then the 40 ft. Neoplans. Now it's either a NABI or a New Flyer on this run. |

With the D 1 and the 30, weren't they formed into a consolodated Route 30 in 1982? I ask this, because the 59b was renumbered the 58 in 1982. Also, as for the F, I thought the line folded sometime in 1985. I have a 1984 SEPTA City Transit Divsion map showing that the F was stiil in existence as late as the time the maps were printed for distribution, which was 1984. As for the 30, I recall sometime in 1996 I spotted 3146 covering a trip on the 30 from 69th Street Terminal to 40th & Market. This was a Saturday. At that time, Callowhill still had the 1987 Neo EB transits numbered 3132-3171. Didn't Allegheny run their 1987 neo EB transits numbered 3172-3211 on the 85 as well? I think I saw an 85 trip being covered by a 3100 once. |
