Well, I got a few rough shots of them online...

There you'll find, by request -

The #2 map and schedule - not too much different from today's version.

The ill-fated #4 line's map and very sparse schedule.

21 and 44 line maps and schedules - aside from the Wycombe switch, nothing too grand.

Not one you requested, but one I find very interesting, the pre-50 merger #57. The hourly "crosstown" along Jefferson and Master Streets is the holdover from the original #57 streetcar. Today's #57 bears little similarity to this route.

Again, another one not requested, but again interesting - the #69 Bala-Manayunk. Not too much to it, but interesting.

Companion line to the #69 was the #81 (as I learned here, both vanished the same day). It's schedule and map are there.

Then we get to some of our lost letters:

First up is the rather dosie-do "P" bus - has a pretty good headway though.

Then up comes your "U" bus. Here I think the service and connectivity of the current #108 blows this little letter bus out of the water.

No luck on the 45 and 49 and such.

Also realize I'm missing the 85. Anyone know much about this holdover from the Fairmount Park Trolley?

Others in the city stack you might be interested in for being different from today:

The 85 bus ran from the Parkside Loop to the Dauphin loop via Parkside Ave, Belmont Ave, Ford Rd, over the Strawberry Mansion Bridge, and through a couple of the twisting drives to the 33rd and Dauphin Loop. This was a close appoximation of the old Fairmount Park Trolley route. The schedule was sparse, 30 minutes during rush hours, 45 to 60 minutes other times. Usually one or two buses were sufficient to cover the route.

In the early 1980's the bus was rerouted because of the structural weakness of the Strawberry Mansion Bridge. The new route went up Ridge Ave, looped thru the Wissahickon Transfer Center, over the City Ave Bridge, City Ave, Belmont Ave, then a loop route over Ford, Cranston, and Conshohocken Ave, back on Ford Rd to Belmont, then on Belmont to Parkside North, Wynnfield Ave, 54th St, Jefferson, 52nd to parkside then parkside to the 49th St loop. This routing doubled the route's mileage and SEPTA adjusted the schedule to the rush headways of 45 minutes, and off-peak and weekend headways of 90 minutes, to keep the assigment of buses to the bare minimum of one to two buses.

The equipment ranged from the Mack C-41's then the "Davy Crocketts" GM old looks, then the rarely seen 1153-1156 TDH3301 New Looks. Then the 1200 series Flxibles ran the route until the 80's, when strangely, full-sized RTS's were assigned to the route.

In 1990 the 85 was killed off, with much of the western part of the route [from Parkside Loop to Ford and Cranston] incorporated into the present-day 40.

Yea, I remember the 85, then for a short period around 1992 or 1993 the 85 used to go to 54th and city avenue and layed over with the 52. As I recall they used to run the 8000 series Neoplans on there. I never recall seeing a 8000 series RTS or 3000 series Neoplans being operated on that route.

To NewFlyer8119:
I think that 1987-88 was the last year they printed the schedules in blue.
Later on in '88, they started to them in the current black with the bus logo (ie trolley, rail, subway/elevated, trackless trolley logo) symbolizing the "We're Getting There" era.
HERE'S what I was talking about:
This is from 1992 (The year when I've became a fan of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority!)

Note:
This is still from the "WE'RE GETTING THERE" era. From 1992. ;)
