With Pittsburgh's recent decision to cut a majority of bus routes, we have to wonder what SEPTA will do. This is my list of predictions as to what will be eliminated. Some of these routes can't be eliminated because of Federal Funding but this is SEPTA we're talking about here. Major Service Cuts and Fare Hikes SEPTA is proposing a minimum 40% fare hike and severe service cuts that would take effect in the summer. Public hearings will be held in April. Here are a listing of routes I think will be changed and how the bad the fare hikes will be. Check out the current edition of Cinders, the official publication of the Philadelphia Chapter of the NRHS (www.trainweb.org/phillynrhs/) Under "SEPTA Transit," you will find a piece about your topic and the fact that Gov Rendell is going to place transit funding on the top of his priority list. PAT and SEPTA have developed the list of draconian service to pressure the politicos to take steps to create as dedicated source of funding for transit throughout the Commonwealth. The cuts that you listed will not happen. They would literally destroy the system. At the same time, someone has to pay for the service. That's the job of the Governor and the Legislature. It's a formidable task but they will have to be up to it or face defeat in the next election cycle. Chuck |

My mom said it would be 5 dollars one way when i will start working for SEPTA. but i didnt think that it will be this soon. IF this fare hike does go, then not too many people will be riding. i think that the goverment needs to give them more money so this wont happen. I think SEPTA is like the highest in the nation as well. does it have to be even higher........... |

Seems to be trouble all over. My sister mentioned the DC Metro's fares might be going up considerably as well. |

The new General Manager John Catoe has put the WMATA fare increase on hold. Apparently he's going to see what savings he can find internally first. |
