If SEPTA had followed through on it's plans to install video cameras on it's articulated buses - in 2001-2002, most artics had stickers indicated that video surveillance cameras on board; for whatever reason, SEPTA never followed through on it - there's a pretty good chance that PPD would have been able to get a photo of the suspect out to the public. |

Angela Russell Reporting (CBS 3) PHILADELPHIA Police are searching for a suspect who shot a man in the head on board a SEPTA bus in North Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon. Authorities said a 45-year-old man was shot twice in the head while riding the Route 33 bus near 22nd and York at about 5:00 p.m. Police said the suspect entered the bus at 21st and Diamond and immediately targeted the victim. "It was very victim-specific, he went right to one gentleman, he even told someone that the only reason why he did it was because that male was after him," said Captain Branville Bard of the Philadelphia Police. The suspect, described as a man in his mid 50s, fled the scene following the violent incident. A witness to the shooting said she saw the suspect board another SEPTA bus. The victim was transported to Temple University Hospital in critical condition. He was later upgraded to stable condition. After the shooting, approximately 30 passengers on the bus frantically tried to exit through an emergency exit, trampling a 12-year-old girl. Her injuries are not considered life-threatening. No arrests have been made and the motive for the shooting is under investigation. |

I doubt anyone of those passengers will come forward. If they didn't care about the 12 year old girl they were trampling i seriously doubt they'd care about a gunshot victim. This added to the fact that SEPTA is to cheap to install cameras in there buses only means that the Philly PD's already tough job will be even more difficult. SEPTA really needs to get there act together when it comes to security on it's system! |

If I am not mistaken, none of the Market Street Subway stops(2nd,5th,8th,11th,13th,15th,30th,34th & 40th) have any yellow emergency call boxes that relay the concern to the proper authorites so that the corrective measures can be taken. Likewise for the ones on the subway tunnel for the 10,11,13,34 & 36. SEPTA kept running their lips saying that they would upgrade the emergency call boxes along the MFL & 10,11,13,34 & 36. I beleive that was in 2000. It may have been shortly after that. And the last thing we need to see is someone getting on a SEPTA bus(such as 5056) on the 42(block 9126) @ 57th & Spruce Streets pointing a gun at the head of a SEPTA CTD Local 234 operator who wouldn't let him on the bus because he didn't have the fare, with a bunch of riders that won't open their lips about the situation for fear of retaliation. Stuff like that can happen. Back in the early 1970s, it was an everyday occurence for a SEPTA City Division operator(especially on the Callowhill, Allegheny depot routes, some of the Luzerne & Southern routes & any of the streetcar lines operating at that time) to be physically harrased or assaulted over the most mundane things. This issue needs to be adressed. Corrective measures must be taken. Ths is probably one of the reasons as to why many Philadelphians stay away from the SEPTA system. Anytime you have a resident that lives in the Wynnefield area(5200 block of Gainor Road) who works in Central Philadelphia driving his or her car instead of riding the 52 & MFL, then a message can be interpreted. |

You have the buses with the cameras at the wrong places. allt the nabis that have camera are at southern, 5393 and 5392. the Broad st line has camera on quite a few of their cars. 657,673,and others. 9080 at callowhill rail and 904* at elmwood with cameras. That is simply not enough safety at all for any one.. and needs to be inproved......... |
