I have an idea as to why SEPTA shuffled some of Midvale's artics to Allegheny. The 9 isn't heavily used during the summer months. From the first 3 trips leaving Andorra leading into the morning peak periods, you have a steady stream of ridership counts. Then the ridership counts thin out until the pm peak periods, where a majority of these riders take the 9 home. However, during the summer months, artics would most likely be seen on the 9 during the am/pm peak periods alone. During the evening hours and all day Saturday and Sunday, don't hold your breath. Regretfully, I spotted 4568 on the 23 last Friday heading into South Philadelphia, at about 5:45pmish. 5133 has since returned to Comly. Last Friday, I spotted 5133 on the 84. 5656 has been moved to Midvale. I think 5656 has been retrofitted with the new engine. Everyone, look for 5656 to confirm this. I spotted 5656 on the H on Thursday.
4568 on the 23?!?!?! what has this transit world come to?

Seeing Eldo's on the 23 has now become a common sight for enthusiasts out of Germantown, I have already seen that before. I don't know why Midvale puts these little rinky-dink buses out on the 23. I've also seen Eldo's on the 18 and the 2 during rush hour.

SEPTA keeps playing with 9 for some reason. It moved the line from Allegheny to Midvale because artics weren't needed for all trips (maybe SEPTA should reconsider Allegheny's 100% artic status, but...), and then 'selected' runs were filled by artics. The runs have been mainly the late starts which puts artics on PM rush runs but keeps them on into the night when they aren't needed.
Recently some early runs are getting artics as well, but these aren't AM rush runs and seem to start after the AM rush. The AM rush on 9 is busy and 40' buses can handle the load IF they run on time. For some reason the run that had called at Wissahickon at 7:14 and was pushed up to 7:12 in the last schedule is at 7:11 in the new timetable, but it rarely gets there on time, so we'll see how it goes.
Many riders have abandoned 9 and 27 (including me) because they are very undependable. Expressway traffic is the main culprit, but 27's length doesn't help (trips take too long into South Phila and to the Mall). 27 once had many shorts starting at Port Royal in the AM but it's down to 2 or 3 and a couple from Ridge & Summit, and you find that 9, 27 and 62 have many trips that start from the depot and still can't seem to be on time.
9 seems to also always get NABI's, even on late night/weekend runs. Every so often a LF gets onto the line (and there must be some extras sitting around Midvale that could spell a NABI or two on the weekends).
27 could be run with 40' buses for most midday and all late night/weekend service. The bigger problem is now the schedule is built around the higher capacity of the artics. When Allegheny had a mix of artics and 40' buses, before the Neoplans arrived, careful scheduling/blocking put the artics on selected runs and things seemed to work - no 60' buses on late nights and weekends, some on midday, almost all in the peak. With 27 going to Plymouth Meeting, it seems a waste to haul all that metal out there and back.
9 gets a fairly constant stream of riders throughout the day from my experience.
As for El D's on odd runs, I've seen them on the C and 2 as well as 23. 62 gets one on the 7:28 inbound every so often as well.

I Spotted 800 at Bells Corner (Rt. 59 Loop @ Bustleton-Cottman) at 2:40 PM.
5294, 5295, 5280 & 5392 are at Midvale now.
And yes, 5656 has been Overhauled. The Operator for Rt 55 3503 Block always has an Overhauled bus. 5640 was his darling until late May, when he started using 5656 on his pullout.
Last but not least, with no media fanfare, 60th St. Station has reopened.

The same applies with routes 48 and 60. On the 48 and 60, up until the Neo artics arrived in full blast in 2000, as late as 1996, Allegheny depot deployed the Volvos on most of the morning straights on both 48 and 60. Volvos were also deployed on the am and pm peak trips on both 48 and 60. If a run on 48 and 60 started out in the early afternoon(pm afternoon straight) and it ran well into the evening hours not exceeding 10pm, then chances are, a Volvo was easily spotted on these 2 routes well after the sun went down. The night straights, everything was 40 footers. The same principles were applied to both 48 and 60 on weekends. Holidays, except for 48(4 at most on 48, 4 on 60, daytime hours), none of the Volvos ran in revenue service. On the 48 and 60, a 40 footer could be spotted during rush hours to fill the peak schedules alone. Do I miss the era whenever one rode an Allegheny depot route and never knew what to get. It was good though.
