Today at 7:35 or so, when I was out for shooting more pictures, I spotted a Keystone Train with a locomotive leading to Philadelphia and on the other side, there's no cab car. Does anyone know why? <_< |

Was it a diesel engine? If so, they don't really have cab cars on those trains, as when the train gets to 30th Street, the diesel engine is replaced with an electric one for service on the North East Corridor. I would be surprised if it was a diesel engine, though. |

Just a simple case of no cab car being available or failed somewhere. It happens. They keep a protect diesel at Harrisburg too, in the event of an AEM-7 failure somewhere out on the line. There are a total of 11 cab cars available for the Keystones, with 7 sets of equipment needed for a weekday schedule. At least 2 cabs are out for routine inspections at any time, and add in the 3 cabs needed for the New Haven-Springfield shuttles, so cab car availability is tight. |

No cab cars are used by Amtrak on the NEC except for the Keystone trains and the Springfield-New Haven shuttle trains. And I think there are 4 sets of equipment for the shuttles, plus one regular consist for the Washington-Springfield thru train. The shuttles are 2 or 3-car trains, using either a cab car or a P42 at both ends. |
