The use of passes also speeds up the ride. It takes longer for ten passengers to deposit cash fares than it does 20 patrons swiping passes. Down here in Baltimore, cash fares cause more schedule problems than traffic, particularly during the AM rush when most Day Passes are purchased through the farebox.

Could it be possible that SEPTA could be bringing in a fare system similar to NYCMTA's and possibly purchasing new fareboxes to welcome it in? There could be a reason why all the emilinations and fare hikes.

Not really. If SEPTA were really committed to a new farebox system, then these changes would've waited until the new fareboxes were properly tested and placed into service.

The "fare simplification" is, in reality, a tool to make it easier for management to collect fares as opposed to making it easier for passengers to use the system.

No decision has been made regarding school students. Discussions between
school officials and SEPTA are taking place to establish the fare payment
methods for school students. Once completed, the information will be made
available.

Sincerely,

Years ago, SEPTA had a method of payment designed for route C riders wishing to transfer over from or to the broad street subway. It was as follows:

From: July 6, 1986:

Base Fare:$1.25
Transfer: .25
Retransfer(C transfer over subway additional .25)--each .25
Gateway transfer(combined fare between city transit division & suburban division--$1.80).

From: May 27, 1990:

Base Fare:$1.60
Transfer: .40
Retransfer(C transfer over subway additional .40)--each .40

By 1990, they did away with the gateway transfer.

Can anyone clarify to me as to how the transfer over subway & gateway transfer methods of payment were carried out? Why did they do away with these two methods of payment?
