Moore's response is typical of the way SEPTA has operated since she took over as General Manager and since Pasquale T. Deon Sr (the political hack from Bucks County who chairs the SEPTA Board) replaced Tom Heyward as chairman of the SEPTA Board. SEPTA refuses to accept responsibility for any percieved negative action that puts the authority in a negative light. To wit: People who have valid complaints about services provide by SEPTA are branded as making "frivolous" complaints... Critics of the authority's management (ie. DVARP) are routinely disparaged in the press as "zealous" and uninformed, while the authority fails to justify a particular position or issue being raised... When the system fails miserably as it did during the Live 8 fiasco a couple years ago, SEPTA spins it's way out of a situation by claiming things were running smoothly... When the public demands answers as to why some things don't improve on the system, the cry of "we don't have the money to do that" which no longer holds water thanks to the new funding (theoretically) that is supposed to be coming SEPTA's way... SEPTA refuses to be honest and up front about capital projects and their associated cost overruns; they have also been percieved as being out of touch with the communities to which they serve - both in Philadelphia and the suburban counties (except, it would seem, for certain sections of Bucks County)... This has been the end result of the Faye Moore/Pasquale Deon era at SEPTA. Hide, act evasive, and leave the public (read: taxpayers and legislators) out of the loop. Once both of these clowns are removed from their respective offices, then we might actually see some true reform and accountability. Criticize him all you wish, but at least Jack Leary made a good faith attempt to hold himself, the authority, and its employees accountable during his stint as SEPTA GM, at least in my opinion. |

This is why we need to get rid of the both of them. We need a chairman who has a vision, and a GM who is a person of action. That's what we had with the Girard-DiCarlo/Gunn combo. Of course SEPTA was near death back in the late 70's and it was crying for somebody to revive it. Today SEPTA's fleet is in much better shape, and now the fiscal condition is much better, but the state and the attitude of management is in the toilet. If there is any change in the ivory tower at 1234 Market, then it is up to elected officials to make that change. Let's hope that Mike Nutter can use his influence and power as the new Mayor to force a change. |

Well, Pass Perks was somewhat of a vision, as well as SVM I guess... The problem is...where's the passion? SVM (and the rt 100 extension at that) could have worked, but there is no passion to do whatever it takes to provide these services...for the riders. SEPTA (and Philadelphia) is lucky that it retained all of these rail ROWs (and low bridges that can't accomodate double deckers :(. Service expansions shouldn't be as hard as pulling teeth as it has been. Anyway, to me, SEPTA has never shown its apathy to the riders as much as they have recently with this "fare restructuring." The elimination of transfers and introduction of the convenience pass is an insult to the riders. I was personally affected as a transpass user as my discounts during the week on RR were eliminated - I would now have to pay double what I paid a few months ago, in addition to a more expensive pass. That's why I really don't like the system anymore. It must be among the worst of the more expensive TA's out there. Nowhere else do I ride buses with filmy, grimy, dirty, moldy windows! I agree - we definitely do need new management who will strive to make the system the best it can be for the riders. I'm glad ctrabs74 pointed out that this isn't a city vs suburbs issue as EVERYONE seems to point out - this is a regional transit issue. It's a shame DART and NJT aren't shinging examples of what a TA should be either... |
