Route 75 troubles today; Double headway

The 7:25 AM trip out of Arrot (2103 block) was a Nabi and broke down. My friend had a Neo 3429, 2102 block and left at his scheduled time at 7:40 with a double headway. He had a standing load up to the step well.

On 3429, The destination sign compartment door would not stay closed , my operator friend told me a shop mechanic tried to fix it on one of his trips, and both latch areas are too worn to catch. The door is hanging by a safety wire right now. I wish I had my camera today, it was a sight to see.

I saw several 3300 suburbans and 3400s(transit/suburban) with the "cable, safety wire or rope" used to hold the control console compartment up.

On the 8285-8584 buses, the latches were silver & were never painted black(even though many of the 8285-8434 group, as well as some of the 8601-8725 & a vast majority of the 8726-8875 group series buses were revamped in the early 1990s).

Thanks, Joe. This looked really scary. From my design days, I feared the cable would break and the door would then flop down on its hinge, but I looked at it and it looks intact. The left hand catch was really loose and swiveled too much. They are going to junk the Neo's anyway. I could keep that door up, but SEPTA would not like my idea.

Since the bus is old, I would put two movable pieces of metal up on the top area that would pivot on self tapping screws , so the door could be opened. Swing them down and the door would be held. Swing them up 90 degrees and you can open the door.

Appearance is not the important thing here , functionality takes over.

I am a retired mechanical draftsman/ designer.
