Why is the Market Frankford Owl split between Callowhill, Comly and Frankford and the Broad Street Owl between Midvale and Southern? Also was the 1 ever split between Callowhill, Comly and Frankford?

They're split, possibly to even the distribution & balancing of both equipment & deadheads.

Th Market Frankford Line serves the vast majority of the bus routes radiating from Frankford(J,K,R,1,3,5,8,19,25,59,66,67,73,75,88) & Callowhill(10:streetcar,15:streetcar,21,30,31,38,40,42,43,44,46,52,65,121) & the communities serviced by these routes(Frankford, Bridesburg, Richmond, Kensington, Fishtown, Northern Liberties & mainland West Philadelphia).

So it makes sense to do a El bus shuttle with the operators familiar with the areas that the MFL serves.

It doesn't make sense to put a suburban transit operator who has no idea of West Philadelphia or any of the communities "under the El" to run an El shuttle(bus bridge on the Elmwood routes) now does it?

What operator assigned to Frankford & Callowhill DOESN'T know about the Market Frankford Line?

Whenever the MFL gets screwed up, depending on whatever side of the line, Callowhill or Frankford operators will get "top billing" when it comes to the MFL(someone got shot @ 56th & Market on the eastbound platform, no El service west of 52nd Street, meaning, emergency schedules take place & in all likelihood, operators assigned to Callowhill on routes 21,42, maybe 46 & definitely 52 will run their current trips(like 5008 on 42, block 126 to 61st & Pine or 5034 on 52, block 532 to 50th & Woodland Avenue) out to their terminuses & deadhead to the starting point for emergency services. Midvale may step in sometimes.

My Frankford operator had to fill in on the 15 with a bus. He did not know the route.
So they told him to follow the tracks. When he got to 63rd and Haverford, he saw a
trolley make a right and almost followed it. That was a route 10 trolley. He did not know the 15 made a left at that corner. He eventually got back on the right heading.

So you really have to know what you are doing, it results in problems when other districts cover strange runs.

As it happens, according to a friend at 1234, the reason that Comly has a few runs on the Blue NiteOwl is because they both terminate at 69th Street in the morning. They then deadhead to 54th & City to become the first two northbound Route 1 trips of the day.

That info was as of a year ago; I'd have to check the run sheets to see if they still do that...

That doesn't mean that they can't deadhead to their next assignments.
