I see that PennDot is reconstructing Germantown Ave and that Route 23 will be on a detour for a extended period of time. With the construction on Germantown Ave are the trolley tracks being replaced or being permanantly removed? If so I guess that would make any chance of Route 23 going back to rail offcially dead.

Friend, keep your fingers crossed. Forget Chestnut Hill. Business owners & residents in East Mount Airy are the ones that are really roaring over the removal of the streetcar tracks.

I attended a meeting concerning East Mount Airy residents. One resident contested that the buses & their fumes serve as a health hazard for pedestrians walking along the business strip.

I felt bad for the woman, but I thought to myself: She doesn't know SEPTA, nor does she know as to how the system is run(anti rail-pro bus). She even made a suggestion that all 23 service be removed from the upper end of Germantown Avenue unless streetcar service is restored.

I thought to myself: The Midvale operators driving the 23 might not be opposed to this concept at all. Operators on the 23 need all the time they can get because between Gemantown & Chelten, Broad & Erie or Market Street(Germantown & Lehigh & Girard Avenue, at times)- they will lose time & end up running down if they get held up at any of these intersections.

The PennDOT construction is supposed to replace the tracks as well due to requests from residents. I think thats supposed to go by the trolley car diner if I'm not mistaken.

Lol, must be talking about those Neoplans! With this demand for trolley service, SEPTA should consider bringing service back - under certain terms. If SEPTA were to be creative enough, I'm sure they could give them a line and get something in return (representation, bus shelters, partnerships, etc). The most important thing would be proper enforcement of parking/traffic laws so that the trolleys could run without problems.

The problem with bringing back the 23 now is that there's not really a depot that can take care of the trolleys, unless you consider converting a part of Germantown back to a light rail facility.

Eliminating the 23 from the upper end of G-town? She OBVIOUSLY doesn't take the route - that's a significant portion of the 23!

To be honest, i don't think the 23 is a good route to make a streetcar line, simply because of the tight main road and traffic. If a UPS truck parks on the side (or more likely double parks) the trolleys are stuck! And, as most of us know, the 23 backs up VERY easily.

Yeah. One day, years ago, during a Friday afternoon in the June of 1989, at about 3:30 in the afternoon, I saw 4(four) PCCs(GOH cars) backed up on the 23 along Germantown Avenue between Haines Street & Chelten Avenue, northbound.

Those days are long gone.

Will the stop announcements for the route 23 detour routing be programmed in?

I spotted the detour stops on the 23 along Stenton Avenue between Woodbrook Lane & Mount Airy Avenue. I think the detour is slated to operate along Stenton Avenue between Mermaid & Mount Pleasant. That may be an indication that the detoru stops will be programmed into the system.

The 31 has been on detour in West Philadelphia for 6 years now. If they didn't program the detour stops in the system for route 31, then I would like to know where the cost of our base fare is going.

Personally, it would be nice to see the 23 back on Germantown Ave., however, it would cost millions to restore service & purchase vehicles. PENNDOT is replacing the infrastructure along a short section of Germantown to placate the residents & business community.
