I haven't been near the 6 in a long time but three schools do come to mind: Central, Girls HIgh, and Kinsey Elementary I know you just said middle and high schools but I remember the 6 taking me to school when I was younger. The reason why the 54 may have seemed not very crowded to me is because I've only riden it in the summer.

I used to go there. A majority of the students would walk to school and very little took the bus.

Concerning route 6, you have New Media Tech(78th & Ogontz), as well as Imhotep Charter School(21st & Godfrey).

As for elementary school students who dare to depend upon SEPTA route 6 during the peak periods, one has to deal with:

Prince Hall(18th & Godfrey), St Benedict(Opal & Medary), St. Anthanasius(Lmekiln Pike & Walnut Lane),Rowen(19th & Ogontz), Pennypacker(Washington lane & Thouron Avenue) & lastly, Mount Airy Church of God in Christ Christian Day School(Ogontz & Chelten Avenues).

Joseph Penell Elementary School (I know this is along the route L but the 6 stops just a few blocks away.) (Nedro and Ogontz)

It's not the elementary schools that's the problem, nor are the Catholic Schools [except the High Schools, but they are a completely different animal], it's all of the Philly Public middle and high schools that "let the animals out of the cages" that plague SEPTA, but then you can say that about all Public Schools in most major cities. I have been on the NYC subways when they let their BeBe's kids out and they are complete monsters.

Fortunately, in DC they keep the cretins away from the Metro. Let the BeBe's kids f#ck-up Metrobus, but keep them away from Metrorail.

gotta love school coming right back around the corner. that is SEPTA's dumb @$$ fault for just ordering 155 artics. now look at the problems they are facing. all of these service inprovments for 2009 could have been reduced if they would have ordered more than just 155 artics, DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh yeah i forgot. us enthusiasts are too smart for SEPTA. they still stuck in the 20th century.
To be fair, when the Neo artics were placed into service in 2000, as I recall, (1) ridership wasn't near the record levels that SEPTA has seen over the past year and (2) the 155 Neo artics replaced 50 Volvos and nearly twice as many 40-ft Neos (not sure the exact number).

We're probably 3-4 years away from even thinking about what the next batch of artics will be (I'd guess either NFI DE60LFR or, god forbid, NABI low floors). I would think that, by that time, the number of artics that SEPTA could potentially own would push 200.

Then again, that's why we're not making the big bucks and the hacks at 1234 Market are...

A year ago I used to pick my sister up from Pennell and EVERYDAY at exactly 3:15pm a crowded artic would pass by on the L to Broad & Olney
