I haven't seen one in a while, but for some time after the movement of routes from Allegheny to Midvale, the Allegheny transfers still carried 9, 32, 39 and 61 as well. I thought 9 was still on them the last time I saw one (over a year ago). R was split between Frankford and Luzerne for years. At some point in the mid- to late-80's Allegheny started to periodically supplant Luzerne's share. I recall more than once seeing Volvo artics on R during this period. I believe R went entirely to Frankford when Germantown Depot closed. 35 was also at Allegheny for a short time in the early- to mid-90's and 3 35' Neoplans were based there for the line (I believe they were 1301-03, but I'm going from memory). Before then, it was a Luzerne line and used the 35' GM's and Flx's as well as the Neo's when they came along. I don't recall if any of the 30' GM's/Flx's were used on the line - it would've made sense. I seem to recall that the 3 Neo's moved from Luzerne to Allegheny to reduce the deadhead mileage. When the El D's showed up and Midvale received its contingent of them, the 35 moved from Allegheny to Midvale to use this fleet and the Neo's were reassigned, to be retired not long after the move. |

I've lived here all my life in the Roxborough-Manayunk area. The 35 did use the 30ft GM's #1150-1156 only for a short time, because SEPTA had a great deal of trouble with the engine model. I don't remember seeing any Flxs on the 35, but they were used on the old Rt. 21 ,which ran a short time in the 70's, from the train station on Umbria St. to Chestnut Hill. The R is still on the Alleghney transit. Finally, the R ran out of Comly for a short time a few years ago, only on peak hour runs. |

I believe 21 started in '80-'81 when the Ivy Ridge train station opened (back then it was the Pennsy line extension, using the now-out of service station at the top of the hill). It ran on my street before I moved there (it quit in '85, I moved there in '86). Given the popularity of Ivy Ridge station these days (the parking lot is filled before 8 AM), maybe the 21 should be reconsidered. Of course it would need a different number now (allegedly 21 was picked to reflect the 21st Ward, which includes the entire northwest (Manayunk, Roxborough, Andorra). I'm sure the new residents of Parker Ave would absolutely love a bus on their street (ha ha). I recall 35 ran the 35' Flx's when I first moved to Roxb, with an occasional rehabbed 35' GM on the line. It didn't take long for the 35' Neo's to take over once the Flx's were retired. There were various times in the 80's and 90's that Frankford and Comly sort of combined to serve their routes. I recall riding the 5 before moving to the NW and it often had 82/8300-series Neo's that were assigned to Comly when they first arrived. |

Philabob, something off topic. During the Penny Era, did the Ivy ridge station exists? After checking out the older PRR schedules, it was not mentioned! After Manayunk station, Shawmont station was next! |

The Ivy Ridge station opened in the early 1980s on the PENNSYLVANIA railroad side of the R6(Ivy Ridge, serving Wynnefield Avenue, Bala, Cynwyd, Barmouth, MANAYUNK WEST & Ivy Ridge). The Ivy Ridge stop was inacessible for riders on the READING side of the R6(Norristown inclusive of Elm, Main & DeKalb Streets). The R6 Ivy RIdge line was cut back to Cynwyd in the mid to late 1980s. Shortly before or after the R6 Ivy Ridge line was cut back, the steps were built @ Ivy Ridge in order to add acessiblility to the R6 Norristown riding public. |

Wait, what? The R6 "Reading" Ivy Ridge Station was built before the R6 "PRR" Ivy Ridge Station? I always thought it was build afterwards? |

Ivy Ridge was a creation of SEPTA. It originally extended the ex-PRR Manayunk line one station and was opened in 1981 I believe. The tracks were still in place that far after the remainder of the line from Manayunk (or what SEPTA started to call Manayunk West, but that didn't catch on with the riders) to Norristown was abandoned in 1960. Trains still went up the line a short distance to about Gates St to cross over, and this was an unofficial stop for many years in this capacity. When the Manayunk Bridge was closed in '86, SEPTA had a problem in that the Ivy Ridge station had developed ridership especially with its nice-sized parking lot. The closure of the station would be both an embarrassment to SEPTA and a major inconvenience to newly-lured riders. Also, major construction on the Schuylkill was underway at the same time, so the station was useful for drivers who wanted an alternative. Thus, SEPTA built the platform and stairway to 'move' the station to the ex-Reading side, where it remains today. It is still a very popular station. It effectively replaced Shawmont, which was closed a few years after Ivy Ridge opened. Shawmont 'suffers' from almost no parking and no place to put additional parking. Many long-time riders will tell you that the Reading station was there from the beginning but it was not. |
