Today while sitting in the parking lot of my school i saw 54xx Eastbound on Chestnut Street. The sign read "21 Express/Penns Landing." Has anyone else spotted this? And was this possible express service for the 21 mentioned in SEPTA's service expansion? |

Sorry to bust your bubble, but the "21 Express" was a blast from the past. This "Express" service [a big joke] ran eastbound on Chestnut St AM Rush hours and westbound on Walnut St PM Rush hours non-stop from 24th to 52nd St with stops in UC at 34th and 38th St. (Editor's Note - The express trips ran to and from Wycombe Loop. The Wycombe branch was merged into the 42 back in 1996) There were only a few scheduled "EXPRESS" trips, about 4 or 5 in the AM rush, and about 2 or 3 in the PM rush. They really didn't save any time over the local run, so they were converted to local trips to better serve the riders of the line, plus it was a casualty of SEPTA's many financial crises. The "21 EXPRESS" sign was programmed in when the Ikaruses arrived, using the same program used by the Neoplans and RTS buses, but were never used in the Ikarus and New Flyer era. SEPTA has no plans to reactivate the service. If you want "Express" service then walk one more block and take the EL. Edited by Septa3371CSX1, Aug 29 2008, 08:07 PM.

That seems about right. Because when SEPTA closed down the 46th Street El stop, a majority of the students at my school (myself included) took the 21 either to 52nd Street or 40th Street, where they'd transfer to the El, and not once did i see a sign for the "21 Express." |
