Over the past couple of days I have been hearing people talking about how SEPTA "needs better overnight service" or they "wish that bus ran overnight". My question to you guys is, Do you think any routes that currently don't have owl service need it? Do you think any of the bus routes with 24-hour service that don't need it? The biggest problem with the Owl routes is that nothing is timed to connect with one another. EX: When I still lived in Germantown, I caught the 351 BSO from UPS every night, and depending on the operator the second he left Girard Ave, he had to run at least 4 minutes hot all the way to Olney because of all the tight connections: 4.35 60, 4.32 23, 4.39 R, and Various buses leaving within 5 minutes at Olney. If that was a operator who didn't care, anyone hitting those routes was waiting anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour at some very dangerous intersections. Especially with routes that originate off a BSO or MFO street, the connections CAN be better since those trips can be held or retimed to connect better - especially the critically vital 23. Oh and the 113 needs OWL service. |

Several years ago the 113 had Owl service all the way to Marcus Hook. Lack of ridership had this service cut. |

On the subject of poorly timed connections, one instance I noticed is the nightliners of the 65 and the 108. The 108 leaves for UPS at 2:25, while the 65 isn't schduled to arrive unil 2:29. Lol, I can imagine 5201 flying down Lansdowne Ave at 2:23 doing 50 mph with a host of impatient UPS employees in an attempt to make the connection with the 108. Actually the first shift of the day - Preload - doesn't start until 4.30 in the morning, and that shift has less than 70 people in the hub; 85% of them drive in since they're mostly fulltimers. All those downbounds are mostly Airport Workers going in and they return with both UPS and Airport workers. What they need is to hold the OTHER 3.51 68E from UPS until 4.05 and send him up then since he's going home at B&O. That's signifigant since the next 68 isn't until 5.45 and that's a local. |

One route that I am not sold on having owl service is the 13 trolley, not too sure, if the ridership is there or not.

Some all-night service in the northwest would be nice. We get the 65 but that's it, and its coverage of Roxb/Manayunk is very limited. The 9 would be a good candidate. If we can't get all-night, then a little later would be nice. As it operates now, 27's last outbound trip leaves Center City at 11:15. Tough to use transit to go to a sporting event, especially when the subway ride from Pattison has to be factored in! 9 keeps going until just after 1 AM but the last two trips have been well-used when I've taken them. |

The 56 should run on a 25 minute street during the owl period. The 9 doesn't need to be an owl route, however, the route could be better served if it were run on a 30 minute street until the last trip. During the mid evening hours, the 9 is covered on a 30 minute street, 4 buses & it can actually keep schedule once the pm peak period is over. If I am not mistaken, after 11:00pm, the 9 only has 2 buses covering the entire line. On Sundays, the 9 stops running shortly after 11:00pm. Or: Extend the R from Wissahickon to Ridge & Summit Avenues during the overnight hours. And I know, there has to be a connection from Central Philadelphia. |
