Maps, Lines and Colors...; A really obscure part of SEPTA history.

Okay, this one is for the true "Transit Historians" and the old heads.

Although Transit maps are not a vehicle related subject, its still a fairly interesting subject to cover every once and awhile.

When did SEPTA adopt the Current Color Scheme for the Rail Lines?

in other words, when did the system map go from this?

To the "High-Speed System" Map of the 1980's (which today's map is obviously an update of)?

I'm thinking early as 1984, when SEPTA took over RRD operations from Conrail and introduced the "Regional Rail" moniker.

Any info helps.

SEPTA adopted the current color scheme for the rail lines in 1979 when David Gunn became the GM. He brought the Boston system to Philly with slight degree of success.

The BROAD ST SUBWAY, and the MFSE kept their original colors, but the Subway-Surface went from PURPLE to GREEN to match Boston's Green Line trolleys.

The Red Arrow Trolleys went from PINK to PURPLE for the Norristown HSL, and to BROWN for the 101/102.

The Regional Rail lines went from Green to Silver mostly to match the type of equipment on the line [Silverliner Rail cars].

PATCO also retained their RED when it was originally assigned to them by the DVRPC.

All right! Now that's what I'm talking about.

Now for the extra point, when did the first "High Speed System" Maps roll out on to the system? The earliest I've seen is at Snyder Station in the Fare Control Area. I believe it's dated 1984, (I'll have to check tomorrow). The nice part about that map is it's pre "Regional Rail". That is-- the "R" system has not been adopted yet, AND there no Center City Commuter Connection or Market East Station yet.

Was the Pre-79 color scheme created when SEPTA took over operations for PTC and Red Arrow?

Once again, any info helps and thanks.

There is one in the underground concourse between Dilworth Plaza and South Broad Street. I dunno when it was created, though. I'll have to check sometime soon.

However, the RR lines were green, and they went all over to different places no longer served by SEPTA. I had a picture, but it got lost in all the pic files I have :(.

That's the one I was thinking of. My boss has a copy of that map - apparently it's dated 1980? Please correct me if that info is wrong!

Uh... The older colors were confusing.

I'm glad to see the old concourse maps are still surviving. However, I don't know how long they will, since other concourse maps are being replaced by those overly simple, yet ineffective "T" Maps.

I swear, with all the innovations of the internet, the trade off is people have gotten too stupid to read and understand maps and signage.

On a different note, does anyone remember the old "Rapid Transit Lines Only" variation of the old transit map?

A rare few survived on the Budd M3's before they were scrapped.
