Well as discussed in another thread, there is a photo posted of a older Neoplan unit. The interesting thing is the A/C on top is not the standard SuTrak A/C found on Neoplans I've seen throughout my life.![]() In the Center-Right section of the photo there's a photo of a Neoplan with some unique A/C device. Exactly how many Neoplans had this type of A/C and when did they start arriving into service with the Sutraks? |

I know 8545 had an AC similar to that. It probably may just be 8545. That is the only one I can remember. |

That bus is none other than 8546. Not 8545, but 8 5 4 6. |

Wasn't some of the Neoplan AK's or BD's were delivered with the short Sutrack HVAC units (the version used on the GOH RTS-II's) early in their careers? |

No. Except for a couple of the 8500's [with the experimental Thermo-King units], all of the Neoplans had the standard Sutrack HVAC units. |

8546 was the one I remember. What was the other bus? I first spotted 8546 on Chelten Avenue in 1984, when I was 3 years old. I recall telling my pop that "I saw the T bus today." The last time I rode 8546 was when I was in 9th grade, sometime in November of 1996. 8546 was a porker at the very end. 8546 was one of the first units to receive the "all white around the windows trim with the SEPTA symbols, red, blue & red stripes in the middle of the bus" livery sometime in 1993. And yes 8546 kept the ribbed engine hood cover in the back. At Frankford, 8444, 8467 & 8546(as well as 8529?) were the first units @ Frankford to receive the then new livery in 1993. 8513 & 8547 got the livery shortly thereafter. 8547 kept its ribbed engine cover after repainting & semi overhaul but lost it shortly thereafter. 8547 ran @ Red Arrow for awhile. 8513 lost it in the process. |

I thought those were thermokings, they looked kinda like the units being used on the New Flyers. Ofcourse its of a much more modern design. |

I remember I saw a Neoplan Ak # 8285 with no A/C SuTrack when I was in Philadelphia since back in 1993 when I was a Kid, Some of the RTS don't have a A/C Sutrack. |

The RTS-II T8J-603's were originally delivered with the pathetically small factory HVAC that were spec'd on the model 01 and 03 units. When they were overhauled around 1986-1987, instead of getting the "04 kit" that was standard with RTS upgrades at the time, SEPTA opted with the "Shorti" Sutrak HVAC's, the likely reason being they were cheaper to install than the 04 kit, plus, the Neoplans were already spec'd with Sutrak HVAC's. Other changes included replacing the rollsigns with Luminators and upgrading the engine from the Detroit Diesel 6V-71 to the 6V-92TA. (possibly the DDEC, not the MUI). ---
I asked because of a lost picture from the AMCAP website from at least five years ago. It had a picture of two Neo's, likely AK's on a layover from the long ago Route 41. Picture Quality aside, there was a good indication that the Sutack HVAC's were the shorti's. Edited by Neoei3318, Dec 24 2008, 01:36 PM.

There was a 'fake' 8285 that was delivered in SEPTA livery for press purposes, as I have been told. This one had open-in window transoms and did not have the Sutrak unit. I've seen photos of it but recall seeing the 'real' 8285 in Courtland Shop just before it went into service. It did have the Sutrak unit and sealed windows. The RTS's all got the Sutraks in their rehabs, so there was none without it after '88 or so. At least one AMG got the ThermoKing unit as I recall (I think it was 850 but not sure). |
