The 'fake' 8285 also had the Neoplan badge on the front access panel, in addition to the factory rims that Neoplan used on its Over-the-road-coaches. A full color picture of it existed in the glass cases in the Transit Museum when it first opened. It disappeared into the ether shortly afterward. Edited by Neoei3318, Dec 24 2008, 02:08 PM.

AMG units 811 & 857 were the only 2 units that got the ThermoKing air conditioning unit placed on their rooftops. 811 was assigned to Southern. 857 was assigned to Frankford. Both units got the white around the window treatment with the SEPTA red, blue & red stripe running through the middle of the units. |

That "fake" 8285 found its way to WMATA in early 1984. I remember riding the bus [renumbered to 9500] and noticed that the bus interior was done to SEPTA specs, not the interiors seen in WMATA's Neoplans. Needless to say, there were two other major differences to the bus. The windows were open-in [WMATA had full sliding windows], and the bus was 96" wide [compared to the 102" of the WMATA Neoplans.] Does anyone know what happened to that bus? I moved back to Philly before the fate of 9500 was known, I know that the Neoplan AN440's at WMATA went to hell quite quickly, and only half of them survived to 1995 when they were killed off by the Flxible Metro E's. When was the 8285 retired? The oldest Neoplan I saw in revenue service was 8286, on the 67, in July of 1994. |
